In this Finnish lesson we will master the demonstrative pronouns: tämä, tää, tuo, toi, and se!
Remember this is only part 1! In the next videos in this series we will try to conquer the various forms that these words can take (tässä, täällä, tuolla, tuolta etc.) There are a lot of them, so make sure you really understand the basics and what tämä, tuo and se mean and how to use them!
Recap:
- Tämä/Tää = This (something within reach)
- Tuo/Toi = That (something within sight)
- Se = That / It (something out of sight)

This topic causes me no end of grief in apps, where "tämä" is sometimes "this" and sometimes "that", and "se" is sometimes "that" and sometimes "it", with no apparent rhyme or reason. And the app won't let you go until you've given it the answer it wants. This video is a much less stressful way of learning about it!

"Se" as a demonstrative pronoun i.e. when it follows by a noun that it refers to corresponds to "that" or "the" in English. When it is used instead of the noun then it means "it" (or in spoken language he/she). Essentially "tämä" is when you hold it, "tuo" when you can point it and "se" when it is further away. "Näitkö sen auton kadulla" = "Did you see the car on the street". "Se oli punainen" = "It was red"

Nicely done for an important set of words for basic oral communication, similar to colloquial Spanish for this/that. I really appreciate your topical videos as I try to cheat my way to learning basics for my upcoming trip!

This is a bit similar to how things were in older forms of English--but not exactly the same. The demonstrative "this" and the adverb "here" refer to something near the speaker--but not necessarily close enough to touch. The demonstrative "that" and the adverb "there" used to refer to something near the hearer. Nowadays, these words have expanded to simply mean anything not near the speaker. The demonstrative "yon" and the adverb "yonder" mean something near neither the speaker nor the hearer. That would apply to things out of sight, but the object in question didn't necessarily have to be out of sight. The words "yon" and "yonder" are now obsolete and have been replaced by "that" and "there."

Isent viedä to bring these things from your place to there. Tuoda is to bring stuff from that place to your place and hakea is the simple way to say to bring your keys you forgot in that place back to home, so you went after your keys, when you need to hakea your keys, while sometimes you say tuoda tavaraa, that means to bring stuff from that place to here, when it isent like you went after the stuff you bringed here, that would be the case, if it was hakea.

If two people are talking to each other, "se" can also refer to something that is close to the other person (as opposed to "tämä", which is close to the speaker).
