Linda Ronstadt, along with Kate and Anna McGarrigle, performs Kate's song "Talk to Me of Mendocino" in a June 1984 TV concert recorded at the Red Creek Inn in Rochester NY.
In addition to Kate and Anna, the band for this concert includes Pat Donaldson (bass), Gordy Adamson (drums), Andrew Cowan (guitar), Gilles Losier (violin), Dane Lanken (bass voice), Chaim Tannenbaum (voice, harmonica, and other instruments), and Jane McGarrigle.

Breaks my heart. I lived there from 1970 until 1984. It was magic. I moved back for a few years in 2016. It's completely different like a a Monark butterfly stuck on a truck's radiator. Broke my heart. Had to leave.

Please try to flesh out the memory of that night. I so regret not seeing Ms. Ronstadt live, but if I had, I would've chosen a venue like this. By the way, you were a most appreciative audience. Thank you.

@@lnl3237 The venue was the Red Creek Inn, a club that used to be in Henrietta, NY, a suburb of Rochester. It closed long ago. As I recall, the capacity was about 300 people and it was full. The concert was recorded by our local PBS station, WXXI, and shown on TV at a later date. This is from that tape. I was seated near the back, but the sound was so good and it was such an intimate setting that every seat was good. The performers were Linda Ronstadt, the McGarrigle Sisters (including Kate, Anna and occasionally their sister Jane) and Maria Muldaur. I don't really have specific memories at this point of all the songs performed, just that I was pleased with all of the artists sets. It would be great if somehow the tape of the entire concert would appear on KZfaq at some point.

There is a place on Hwy 128 going towards the Mendocino coast that there is a small hill and when you top it you have a huge Redwood forest in your rear-view mirror and the deep blue of the Pacific ocean in front of you overlooking Navarro by the Sea, one of the most beautiful places on Earth, this song reminds me of that place..... it truly takes me home....

It wasn't just her not over-singing her part. Here, she gladly accepted to sing in Kate McGarrigle's key, which was too low to really suit her, instead of the key she had used in her recording, which suited her.

This is a beautiful song, written by the McGarrigle sisters, and sang here very sweetly by Linda and the sisters. For me this song is about yearning for roots. Linda knew about this, having started out touring at about 16 and carrying on without an established home for at least 10 years. For me, it struck home after mum's death 4 years ago. For a while after mum's death this made me cry every time I heard it. I thought it was cathartic. Now the association has gone but it is still a beautiful song.

This song, especially when sung by Linda, evokes a kind of deep unfathomable, almost indefinable emotion in me. It makes me want to cry when I hear it. For me, it is about a long for love and also a deep longing for being more one with nature, for more simplicity and realness of human experience and expression, for a "slowing down and smelling the roses," or watching, hearing, feeling the ocean waves, seeing the sun set with end of a day and rise with the next, a deep yearning for things that all too often get crowded out and lost in this chaotic mess we call modern society. We need songs like this one.

I hear just the opposite. To my ears she doesn't feel or doesn't convey the emotion of the original. I first bought this album in it's release year 1976 and replaced it as the medium changed as the years went by. To this day it's on my playlist. I married a Canadian woman and when we went to her home town of Montreal I asked her to take me to St Catherine street just so I could go to the metro station and feel the heat coming up from the gratings (it was February) it just as I imagined the sisters did. I'm a huge fan.

I think this song is also about the challenges of loving - does my lover who is leaving want me? Am I welcome still in his/her life? Or has that person really left me? And the challenge of being a woman when this was written. Must I be passive (the stereotype of the good woman), must I wait (to be invited, to be asked, to be wanted, enough?), must I follow (as in follow behind - not accompanying, nor leading, must I play the traditional role and follow at someone else's bidding?) The underlying question: is this love? Am I loved? Or is this subjugation and not love?
@unamckillen7125
@unamckillen7125 10 жыл бұрын
Eh? To me this is a song about the beauty of landscape,finding some sort of comfort in it and longing for roots. I hear nothing about the challenges of loving and I am guessing if someone is leaving you, they are doing it because they no longer want you. I don't think it was any harder to be a woman when the McGarrigles wrote this and I am pretty sure that women were no more passive than they are now. I think your questions are interesting, philosophical ones but relevance to this song???

I agree. Linda's voice has a depth of emotion that the McGarrigle sisters don't have - fine song-writers though they are. My late sister was a McGarrigle fan, I am a Linda one. She may not (mostly) have written her own songs but she always knew whereof she sang. I find this song a little painful now - we all so long for roots, don't we? and they are nowhere to be found in our modern society.

Squawk to Me of Mendocino by someone who lives here Bid farewell to the state of Arizona To get away from home In the LA traffic you begin to age When first your hair starts graying. And the trees grow high in Mendocino This is your last chance to see Those that Calfire hasn’t taken, Cut down by PG and E. Squawk to me of Mendocino Open your eyes, you’ll see RVs Drive up from San Bernardino Passing log trucks full of trees. Cloverdale, turn left to Boonville Getting carsick on the turns Guys can pee upon the redwoods Gals can squat down in the ferns. Eat another lemon gummie Stop and take another toke. Running gaily through the redwoods Crashing into poison oak. What’s become of Mendocino? Now it’s normal and mundane Where are all those old-time hippies? Only tourist traps remain. And the t-shirts all say “Mendocino” Now you wonder why you bought ‘em Never had the crabs from whence you came But in Fort Bragg you caught ‘em. As the sun sets on the ocean You’re still staring at your phone No, I will not take your picture Let me brood here on my own. Squawk to me of Mendocino Open your eyes, you’ll see RVs Drive up from San Bernardino Past the last remaining trees.
