Eric ,you are incredibly intelligent, I have listened to this Album for years, and although I love it, I've never been able to decipher it. You have explained it brilliantly. My god I'm absolutely dumbfounded how far ahead Kate was in everything she was doing. It's really hard to imagine someone having that much talent , she really was in a different league to everyone else.

Yes it's absolutely amazing. She kinda lost me after Sensual Word but 50 Words for Snow (and Director's Cut from 2011) is one of her best. I typically play Aerial with 50 Words for Snow as they have similar atmospheres.

Far and away one of the more thoughtful reviews of this album. I am old enough that I was able to buy all Kate's albums the day they were released. I remember excitedly rushing home to listen to The Dreaming and being disappointed by its 'wacky' content. It took me many hearings and several years before I could appreciate its real power.

Wow... great work. The Dreaming is such a layered, complex album and you really did a great job diving in, wading through the weirdness, and really exploring the themes. Like you, I feel Hounds of Love is her best album, but The Dreaming has several of my all-time favorite Kate Bush songs: Pull Out the Pin, so powerful, Suspended in Gaffa, unique and beautiful, Night of the Swallow, intense and just gorgeous. And so many more... Sat in Your Lap is such an explosive opener, and really smart lyrics. This was definitely her most experimental album, and she just pulls out all the stops. It's her least successful album too, but honestly, I think it's the first manifestation of her true genius. As for what you should do next... I would go with Aerial, but Never for Ever is a good one too.

I had the same journey from Hounds (my first Kate album) to The Dreaming when I was around 18. For it's largely experimental nature I had an initial reaction that bordered on it being mind-blowing and also overwhelming. But I also am highly invested in lyrics so the stories and meanings in the songs on top of the sonic landscapes she created I couldn't help but fall in love with it. So glad you're doing this journey . .. also looking forward to more Tori.

Awwww Eric ... seeing the intelligence and inspiration and oneness-with-the-music bounce about in your eyes is very infectious to watch. As usual, you've also opened up some connections I never noticed before, even though I've been listening to this album for 35 years. When you were talking about similarities between Sat in your Lap and There Goes a Tenner, I suddenly also noticed other links in the lyrics to Suspended in Gaffa >>> "Can I have it all now" (urgency to acquire) / "She don't stand a chance of getting anywhere at all" (apprehension at whether she will be able to acquire what she's seeking). Plus the similarity in structure between Suspended in Gaffa and There Goes a Tenner's rhythm, and the way the rhythmic verses are broken up by a haunting, sweeping, dreamlike break. And loved your tenner/tenor quip! I seem to remember reading somewhere that the "we let the madness/weirdness in" line from Leave it Open was produced by Kate recording the line, then playing it backwards and singing what she heard, then reversing that recording so it played forwards again. I found this fascinating. And to echo another commenter: I was dying to see your expression when that donkey started to bray (Get out of my House)! But no. Haha. And I'm so glad you didn't say "without further ado" because if I hear one more person say "without further ado", I'm gonna spew burrito chunks. You are a universal treasure. I wish what you do would get more recognition, but I guess you're a specialist and a niche market, and not for the masses. x

I love this album from Kate Bush. I think it's still my favorite. Hounds Of Love has more memorable hits but this one has no filler and is perfect from top to bottom. I don't know if I'm right or not but I always thought that Suspended in Gaffa meant Suspended in the ceiling or something like that. Maybe because of the music video filmed in a barn. This album is really multi-dimensional and the music videos add a plus that can't be denied. The music videos of this era are all so incredible that they both go hand in hand with the music.

Suspended In Gaffa is about trying to get as close to god or some higher power as close as possible yet crumbling judt as you get there. - as Kate has said herself. To me the pre choruses before the "Suddenly My feet..." is the that suspended feeling and then as the chorus comes in, BAM you're back to reality. It sorta describes the fine line between religion and insanity. The best song on the album by far IMO!

As always that was such an incredible review. The Dreaming is often cited for its bold sonic experimentation and use of the Fairlight synths, but it's not often I come across people really diving into the lyrical content on this very singular record. I think Never For Ever and The Red Shoes would be really good albums for you to do reaction videos to! Never For Ever has some of her most melodic, accessible songs, and makes a very stark contrast to the gritty theatricality of The Dreaming - I think it'll help to contextualise where she was going with this album. The Red Shoes is probably an odd choice - it's not one of the fan faves by any stretch but I think it's one of her most emotive and enigmatic records that captures Kate in probably one of the most downtrodden periods of her life, whereas most of her other records tend to have a more positive, hopeful energy. If there's anyone who can do that album justice, it'll be you!

Wow!! dude...Your insights were outstanding..are you sure this is your first listen?? Themes like these are NOT easy to tackle and can be uncomfortable for most pop music listeners. I am a musician songwriter, so naturally I want to dive deeply into everything that has depth and what may sound weird to some people is often normal for me because when exploring unknown places or delving into uncharted waters, it is NORMAL and in fact, desirable to be surprised, shocked or mystified. It is the duty of every great artist to take us into these new unknown realms. This is why I think "The Dreaming" is Kate's greatest achievement. To explore extreme areas of the psyche and deliver it with such power and clarity is the cream dream of every aspiring artist. Kate is one of the fortunate few who created, expressed, said and did what we were all privately yearning to create, express, say and do, but we were too chicken shit to jump in all the way!! Lol...

Hi Eric! This was a great reaction to one of my favorite albums of the 80’s and from Kate Bush. I agree with you about Hounds of Love being amazing, but this album holds a special place in my heart. The first single I bought from Kate was the 7” vinyl of The Dreaming based on the pictures on the front and back covers. I had never heard anything like it and loved the storytelling aspect of it. One of my other favorite albums, also released in 1982, is The Changeling by Toyah. It is a dark and difficult album with strong themes of escapism and freedom. I think you would enjoy her wordplay as well. The album cover should intrigue you as well! Keep up the amazing work.

This is the first video of yours that I've seen... and I just wanted to say: WELL DONE!! What a fantastic, thoughtful, illuminating reaction! I often look at Kate Bush's career and pair with Peter Gabriel. Both had a wonderful first pair of solo albums... But Peter Gabriel's 3rd album ("Peter Gabriel," III, or "Melt") was an amazing, fearless, and brilliant album (which also featured Kate Bush on a couple of tracks!). This was Gabriel at his most adventurous (post- Genesis) and it remains one of my all-time favorite albums. Likewise, Kate's 3rd album ("Never For Ever") which appeared about 5 months later, was a subtle departure from her previous two... and led the way to "The Dreaming" where she just let it all hang out. Both artists are very fond of each other's work and they were basically the King and Queen of fearless, in-your-face music that actually had something to say... Later, they would each release an album that would be the perfect marriage of artistic integrity and commercial success ("So" for Gabriel, "Hounds of Love" for Bush). While the best side of music Kate Bush ever released (in my opinion) was "The Ninth Wave" off of "Hounds of Love," I think "The Dreaming is her best work. It's my favorite, anyway. I remember getting this album when it first came out (I'm old, lol) and it was a definite shock to the system. But it reveals more and more upon every listen. It's not a toe-tapping album you play when you're driving a car with the top down on a sunny day... but it's more like one of the most incredible nights watching a brilliant film or stage play. Something you remember forever. Where to next with Kate? I'd definitely go back an album and "Never For Ever." Wonderful album from start to finish. Since this is my first video I've seen of yours, I'm not sure what you've covered just yet... but I can heartily recommend the following: PETER GABRIEL - Peter Gabriel (3rd Album or "Melt") XTC - "Nonsuch", or "English Settlement," or "Apple Venus, Vol 1" (as you can tell, I LOVE XTC... criminally underrated brilliant band.) RADIOHEAD - "OK Computer," "Kid A," or "A Moon-Shaped Pool" ROBYN HITCHCOCK - "Queen Elvis," "Eye," or "Jewels For Sophia" (another quirky surrealistic English singer / songwriter ) THE DELGADOS - Universal Audio (Another criminally underrated band from Scotland with both male and female singers... great literate pop) I'll be subscribing and checking out your other videos! Cheers!

Here's a little contextual information for the Houdini song. Kate is basically taking on the Persona of Bess Houdini who was Harry's wife. Whenever he was performing one of his tricks she would pretend to kiss him and in doing so she would slip him a key in her mouth. And she would in a way be guarding over his life. It's a very beautiful story... also invoked on the album cover

Hey, Eric! It's been a while since I've seen your reactions (I know, my bad!). As you said it yourself, The Dreaming is not very accessible. In my case, I remember when I first listened to it, I only liked There Goes a Tenner, Suspended in Gaffa and Night of the Swallow. I couldn't get into the rest of the album. It took me 7 months to finally get to like the record and up to this day is my #1 Kate Bush album and it's undoubtedly one of the best records released by any artist. When Kate released this album, her record company didn't want to finance it because of its lack of accessibility and Kate decided to produce this album all by herself. Even though this is Kate's 4th studio album, this was her first venture as the sole producer of her albums. Kate herself has referred to it as her "I've-gone-mad" album. It's always amazed me how eloquent you are with your thoughts and how on-point your analyses are. Many Kate Bush songs are complex, including the lyrics but you got everything down to a T. Thank you so much for this great reaction and keep the Kate Bush reactions coming. BTW, may I also compliment you on your facial hair? You rock the look.

You were surprisingly insightful in your reviews although some of the assumptions were maybe open to interpretation. Leave it open I have often interpreted as learning to be self conscious (as a child) and then breaking free of inhibition to be her artistic self, which I think you put across quite well but maybe missed the point slightly. As far as “Get out of my house” goes, this does seem to be a shutting off of human contact, an almost paranoid isolation which can be seen again in “Deeper Understanding” from the Sensual World album. This is another Kate Bush album you should definitely cover!

If you liked Kate's vocals in this album, you must react to her evil sister's (Nina Hagen) album Nunsexmonkrock. It was released at about the same time, but it aged much better IMO, the music is much harder to date. Regarding vocals... I'm sorry to say, but at this time Nina was at the top of her game and no one could touch her. Just check the album cover and decide if it's worth a listen.

Great analysis, however, I believe "Night of the Swallow" is about flying people illegally in or out of a country. Not any kind of heist, but just as fraught with danger. This album is absolutely stunning and completely beyond what anyone had done before or since. When Kate screams, which is often in the background of these amazing songs, it lends an authenticity of pain, emotion and life to her subjects. Her voice is such an instrument of sheer anguish and lament. It affects me so strongly I'm left breathless. I hate it when people listen to songs over, and over. I'm gonna do it right now. You're gonna have to do Never Forever. Unavoidable!

The reference to planks is also in the New Testament in the Bible which makes sense seeing in Suspended in Gaffa Kate is searching for God.

Wow - you're quite mesmerizing to watch and listen to! The Dreaming is one of my favourites because of the anger, the percussion and the weirdness - and you gave me new insights! There's a new book about this album ( www.wymeruk.co.uk/webshop/books/pop/kate-bush-the-dreaming-in-depth/) if you want to continue. Do The Sensual World or Never for Ever next!

If still love to see reactions to the holy trinity of British synth… Pet Shop Boys, New Order, and Depeche Mode. Their entire discographies. My favorite from each are Behaviour, Technique, and Violator. But I’d hate to see you start with their best and then have the rest of the material feel like a downhill experience.

If you would like to engage with some pop which is heavy yet quirky, intellectual yet fun, commercial yet obscure, serious yet funny, try the album "Kimono My House" by Sparks.

Get out of my house could also be about assault. A man wanting to enter a womans body. It gives it a very dark feel to it then.

First of all let me get out of the way the fact that you are som damn cute!! I really ejoy when you find a more cerebral smart person experiencing Kate, cause you get more thatn just "Oh wow, how amazing and unusual!!" This album, i feel as a 53 year old, has been seen as the one that you HAVE to prefer cause it's the edgiest one. As much as i adore it, i have to say it's the one that over the years i listen to less. It's just a lot of a lot. It's the opposite of effortless. Admirable, but a bit exhausting. The streamlining of the ideas learned in The Dreaming applied to Hounds strikes to me an iconic balance.
