Never For Ever - not only my favourite album of hers (a proggy masterpiece) but arguably the best cover too.

Aerial for me has to be number one… the complexity of her song writing and listening to her voice mature since her first few albums makes it a great album to explore as a huge Kate Bush fan..

Kate Bush fits into no genre, unless there is a specific genre called Kate Bush...Which I think already exists, inhabited solely by Kate Bush.

seeing the dreaming that low made me violently convulse but seeing never forever at number 1 saved it, nicely done

In their rush to condemn Kate's "The Red Shoes" for being too commercial (I hate that word), fans put their foot in it because it has some incredible songs, like the haunting, low-key Prince collaboration "Why Should I Love U" as well as the non-Lp track "You Want Alchemy" from the "Red Shoes" B-side.

Never Forever is the first Kate Bush record I ever owned, the first to be released on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain. It was nothing like anything I had heard before, and remains my absolute favourite 30 something years on. That said, I don’t think Kate ever recorded even an OK album, and they all … serve different purposes if that’s a way to put it. So relationship is non linear, and even if it were, we’d be debating fourth decimal points here. To me Kate is one of those rare artists who come as a single package, individual albums being just elements in the gorgeous mosaic.

I really enjoyed your review. I am more of a "Dreaming" guy, but "Hounds of Love", "Aerial", and "Never Forever" are really good top picks. I still do this thing whenever I listen to "Breathing" where I wait for the end of the song to die down, and then turn the volume up to 11 for those last two bass notes. You should try it! 😎

I know you're ranking her studio albums, but it would have been great to have a mention (outside the ranking) of her 4 lp live set "Before The Dawn" (2014 concert recording, 2016 release). A spectacular live album with incredible sound quality (especially on vinyl). A flawless performance from Kate (her voice is better than ever), and an absolutely KILLER band.

I'm so glad someone has Never For Ever at the top. Masterpiece is right, and a perfect bridge to what was to come.

finally some proper appreciation for Lionheart extremely underappreciated, amazing to think it was realeased in the same year as her debut and is alleged to be something *thrown together* to please a record label who wanted a quick follow-up to initial success but sometimes the best art is made under constraints like that

Kate Bush first had full artistic control with the Dreaming. So if it's not your favorite Kate Bush album, then something else that's not Kate Bush is what you're liking by her.

Interesting placings. I liike how you give the later works weight in your list. Im 53 and have been listening to her since i was a teen, and i adore 50 Words and Aerial. Very underrated albums.

Nice to see more love for LIONHEART and ARIAL, two very different but enjoyable albums near the top of my list. The only release I find underwhelming is 50 WORDS FOR SNOW. The music is slow, lacking dynamics; her duet with Sir Elton is also soporific. On the other hand, despite being a reimagining of previously released work, I find THE DIRECTOR'S CUT an engaging listen. Reworking "Rubberband Girl" as a Stones homage was a brilliant move. She also got permission from the estate of James Joyce to use Molly Bloom's soliloquy for the lyrics of "The Sensual World". Although her original is still the preferred version, Bush again demonstrates a talent for combining literature with pop. I'd heartily recommend both the live BEFORE THE DAWN and the compilation THE OTHER SIDES (collecting her fascinating b-sides and covers). Thanks for an interesting "Worst to Best" episode.

I think The Sensual World has some of her best songs ever on it but as an album it's a little tame yeah. The Dreaming is my favourite Kate album but I get why it's controversial in her discography. It is very messy but she was working with new technologies. The Hounds Of Love is a much cleaner use of that tech and more successful on the production side but I still like the messiness of The Dreaming more. My ranking would be The Dreaming > Hounds Of Love > Aerial > Never For Ever > The Kick Inside > Lionheart > The Sensual World > Fifty Words For Snow > Directors Cut

Interesting - for me I would stick Aerial and 50 Words for Snow lower and Sensual World, Kick Inside would be much higher - Interesting you put Lionheart quite high, that one often gets overlooked

For me this is easy so from worst to best Directors Cut (I consider this a remix album even if she doesn't :p) Lionheart The Red Shoes 50 Words For Snow Never For Ever The Kick Inside Aerial The Dreaming The Sensual World Hounds of Love (The perfect amalgamation of all her ideas, idiosyncrasies and sounds, the perfect KB album).

I definitely think Never For Ever is a bit underrated. But better than Hounds Of Love or The Dreaming? The Sensual World that low? I guess everyone has their own taste.

Amazing! My list is EXACTLY the same as yours, except that I have Lionheart much lower down, it's never quite clicked with me like her other work for some reason. But that's just a personal quirk, I wouldn't argue with those who have it higher :-). Good to see I'm not alone in having Never For Ever as her best, though as you say all her albums are fantastic! Always enjoy listening to another KB fan waxing lyrical. I was only a teenager in 1978 and Kate has had me on the end of her hook ever since. I would put The Sensual World at number 1 but Never Forever is fantastic, brilliant that you have it as your favourite. Great that you also threw love the way of Lionheart. Maybe you should have called the video "Good to Perfect".

It's so interesting to see the lists of others and how they compare to one's own. There's no right or wrong, as it's a matter of subjective taste. Here is my list (without The Director's Cut). Ariel (Well thought out and creative) 9. 50 Words For Snow (EXCELLENT imagery. The music is usually a bit too minimalistic, but it fits the theme, so it's appropriate).

Kates not an artist you make top/ worst 10 albums list out of. All her work is still head and shoulders above the rest of the crap out there.

I always felt that Hounds of Love was *almost* like a double album, structured along the lines of Arial with the potential singles on one side and then the contiguous "Ninth Wave" on the other - which is just a masterpiece of storytelling. Of course, if you've got a CD you don't necessarily see it like that! When I first listened to Arial back in 2005, I thought it was OK, but nothing too special... it didn't get a lot of subsequent play. However, re-listening to it over lockdown and paying more attention it, it grew on me quite considerably.

I first saw Kate Bush on Saturday Night Live singing "The Man with the Child in His Eyes". I was immediately smitten and ran out and bought "The Kick Inside". From start to finish, I loved it. This was circa 1979-80, and I proceeded to buy everything I could find. Her most recent single, at the time, was "December Will Be Magic Again". As a 17-yesr-old aspiring songwriter, I was hooked on all things Kate. But, after "Hounds of Love", and at the age of 22, I'd moved on. (Though, the B-side, "Under the Ivy", might be my all-time favorite Kate song.) i bought "The Sensual World", but it meant little to me. I liked the title track, but the rest of it whooshed right by me. (I may have given it only one listen.) I almost bought "The Red Shoes" because I saw it available on vinyl. But I didn't bite. I didn't like the digital, soul-less sound of her previous album.) So, to re-cap: 1 The Kick Inside 2 The Dreaming 3 Lionheart 4 Never, Forever 5 The Sensual World 6 everything else...unheard

Thanks! Yeah, I find it very tricky to list these albums. If Kashka From Baghdad was on The Kick Inside, then that would be number 1 for me. It's not, so I would go with The Dreaming. Then Kick Inside. Then Never Forever. After that, I find it all a bit close to list them.

Dude, "The Dreaming" is, by a long shot, her best album. It is truly monumental. Who else in history could or would write write "Pull Out The PIn"? Of course, everything she did is genius, but this is the real deal. Not sure how it is this far down this list, not even in the top 3 says more about your taste than an objective analysis of the music, lyrics , production. Good try though, and any Kate Bush fan is cool in my books!

I stood alone with my love for her for years now people open up and I'm just excited 😂... And another thing that I love about her is that it depends on the album in which music niche you want to put her. Take the Dreaming for example, Progressive Rock at its finest

Lionheart has my favourite Kate Bush song on it.....WOW....my favourite album is never for ever.

How does a super prog fan not even mention “The 9th Wave”? I thought that would be a stand-out reason for it to be a top 3 album.

I really can't do a list of the top 10, as I haven't played those LPs in quite some time, and I would need a refresher. But I can say that judging just by the number of plays I have given it, Hounds of Love would be #1 for me. And the track that causes me the most sadness and deep thought is Watching You Without Me. I feel great sadness for the narrator, and her partner. Especially when she tries to speak to him, but cannot - and so she leaves.

The Dreaming and Hounds Of Love are my joint favourites. Not a fan of Red Shoes, Directors Cut or 50 Words For Snow.

Very nice to see Never Forever at the top! I do think it's funny not to mention that side two of Hounds of Love is one entire track about drowning, confronting a satanic figure in hell and then being pulled out of the water and returning to family love!

Lion heart was her worst work 😅 everyone on the comment section agreeing on that... the dreaming is a masterpiece that gave birth to many alternative artists like bjork .... the director cut is such a good album I won't out it last I've enjoyed the vocals more than the orginal

The Dreaming's second half is when the musicality is more prevalent and the experimentation secondary.

You did it again! Personally I can't stand Babooshka. Glad that we agree on Army Dreamers and Breathing. The Dreaming is the only one I have on CD so my favourite by default. But I agree it's not for the faint of heart.

I love The Hounds of Love the most followed by Aerial and The Sensual World. I hated The Dreaming and never bonded with the others, will give them another go!

The Sensual World deserves to be MUCH higher.It crystallizes her artistry to gems.Her work with the Trio Bulgarka is intense. When she later revisits and re-records stuff, I don't like them. The Dreaming is the posers' choice.
