I wrote the lyrics to this beautiful theme from FF9 and worked very hard arranging this song for voice, harp, guitar, various drums, and recorder! I performed all the instrumental parts in the background and am doing all the vocals.

In the lyrics I used the term Rose of May as a metaphor for innocence. Even the great General Beatrix was once an innocent child who'd never seen the horrors of war. I really tried to put her character into the lyrics; her blind loyalty and sense of duty, her guilt over the many deaths she caused in the name of fealty,
and her eventual love for Steiner. ^_^

I think 99% of people are back here for the same reason. To remember the goodness of those times. The music is a way to connect and bring us to the times that made more sense. If FFIX gets remade, this needs to accompany a new Beatrix scene. It's been so many years since I first heard this and every time I come back it immediately evokes the essence of FFIX. It also makes me disappointed Beatrix never joined the party. Phenomenal song that will stand the test of time.

I'm actually irritated at the English translation, because apparently in the original Japanese Beatrix is a bit less cold and ruthless. (I had a hard time forgiving her for all the crud she did early in the game when I first played it...I don't think I ever really did, to be honest.) So I'd love a new translation as well. It also makes me fear for the FFIX cartoon that's coming out...because if they're gearing it to younger audiences there's no way they'll hit the emotional parts of the game correctly.

Just some light reverberation as is standard in most recordings :) It simply adds a slight echo effect as if you are recording in a larger space. My music is full of little intonation mistakes and I like the natural quality- so I obviously never use autotune or modifications of that sort. But I am very good at a vocal technique called 'yodeling' which can confuse people who listen to autotune a lot ^^; It's naturally created in the throat by vacillating between head and chest voice :)

After the first time I heard these lyrics to this already very beautiful, yet still somehow longing and haunting song, I could no longer listen to the original Rose of May without automatically beginning to sing them. Kate, you truly are great. You have a natural talent for both writing and singing poetry.

I'm gonna have to echo this. Every time I hear a piano rendition or any other cover I automatically sing these lyrics in my head. Pretty powerful considering the original was never intended to have lyrics in it's inception.

I met you about 5 years ago. I was about 8 years old, I had just finished FFIX and wanted to listen to the Soundtracks again. I was just a chilf, but when I heard your voice for first time I was speechless and you really made me cry. I did not speak English (and I still don't speak it very well either) but it was not necessary to understand you to feel moved. It is a pity that you do not have millions of subscribers, you are very talented. I hope many more people will meet you soon.

Hey Kate, its 2018 and im still with your music. I've been writing since age 12, and about four years ago I lost everything, two years ago I lost everything I had recovered due to freak accidents... Your music inspired me to write more than any other source of music- your lyrics the sound really vibe with my thoughts and creations. I'm a huge fan of all your work, but this one speaks directly to my heart. I am a woman in the military and the lyrics you so masterfully wove for this piece are completely and utterly perfect. Been listening to this since it first came out. Still come back to listen to it fairly often. IMO it's the best version of this song, better even than the original. Usually when people add lyrics to instrumental songs, I find it detrimental, kind of like they've awkwardly forced words onto something which wasn't intended to have them. However, the lyrics for this song are masterful. So much of it is just pure poetry. It's like the song was always meant to include these words.

Holy hell, I was choked up through most the song. I can't imagine the time and effort you put into this masterpiece. As much as I love what you did with it, I'd love others to take your lyrics and try their own version as well, with your permission of course. The lyrics are absolutely phenomenal, the feel of the music was great, your vocals were chilling.. it was all so.. hauntingly beautiful. I just started playing FFIX (went in completely blind despite the game being nearly 20 years old) and the moment I heard Beatrix's theme I KNEW I had heard it somewhere before. A few searches later and I found this! I used to listen to this all the time in high school but I had forgotten where the original came from. Now whenever I hear it in-game it makes me so happy and I always hear the lyrics in my head.

This is very well done and is well sung. I never thought someone would make fan lyrics for this music. The lyrics really fit for Beatrix and how she feels about her self and her loyalty to the queen and princess. The song is very good and fits perfectly. Great work!

I just took my PS2 out of the closet and booted up FFIX. I simply cannot believe how well you captured the emotions Beatrix must have felt. You take a minor character from a videogame and transform her into a compelling, heartbroken figure. Kudos.

Still listening to this on average once every 2 weeks, so glad I played the Dragon Nest beta. During it, I heard the Calderock Village Theme Song which I later found out was called Eternal Path / Song of the Goddess and led me to discover Erutan.

Only just discovered this! Rose of May has been a favourite song of mine since before I heard it in FF9 (I heard it on classical radio when they had their "Computer Game Hour" on Sunday afternoons years back). If you know any other tracks like this with good lyrics attached let me know please! (Although if it's final fantasy games, then I only played them up to FFX-2, so it would have to be something special if there's no nostalgia with it for me!) I'm going to post a similar thing in the main comments in case anyone else has some ideas too, but hopefully hear from you soon my dude!

This is one of the songs that somehow manages to calm me down. It sometimes feels like the personification of what it feels like to grow up or even guilt over past mistakes. I just came across this song on your album and immediately the lyrics struck me. I feel you've really captured Beatrix so well in this piece - especially the loss of innocence we never saw that created who she was during the game, up to the point she found and chose her proper path alongside Steiner. Beatrix is my favorite caracter of FF9, and this sound make it a lot in that way. So when i saw a version sing by a fan, i was perplexe; But seriously until the first secondes of your voice, i went to an another world. It's a really good job, you can be really proud of you. This is one of my favorite pieces for FFIX and you do it more then justice; it's downright beautiful, and I don't say that very often, let alone when compared to the original piece. I especially like how the lyrics actually have meaning and define Beatrix as a character, so great job on that as well, though I'm sure at this point you've heard it a million times.

I discovered this song back in high school, having never played FFIX. In college, I based my still-favourite D&D character on this song and General Beatrix. Now, two years after graduating, I've finally downloaded and started playing FFIX just to meet Beatrix, and I have no regrets.

When I listened to this, it really took my breath away. You make this song so captivating, and I really believe it captures Beatrix's character extremely well. Its such a bittersweet sound theme song anyway and I think you just trapped that feeling to a T. Wonderful singing voice. Its sweet, and pleasant to my ears. its 2022. its been 14 years. how is this song not in FFXIV? This woman, beatrix. Is a paladin from FF9 prolly the strongest female knight to have ever existed. There is a character in league of legends that was inspired by the character beatrix in her creation, Fiona the Grand Duelist.

I love this game and this song is also my favorite. I love your lyrics to all of the Final Fantasy IX songs. I wish that you would continue with your covers for FFIX. I would even be willing to assist with collaborating, I play several wind instruments in concert/pep band. Either way, I hope you’ll do more at some point. This work was great and still among my favorites.

Awesome lyrics, great voice. This was one of my favorite nonplayer characters in the FF series. Thanks for adding some more depth to her character.

As I had said before on the other channel, this song touches my heart. Beatrix is my favorite character in FFIX. When I first played the game and encountered her, I felt that there was much to her story and personality that initially shown. Your song captures her tragedy so well, this one of the few perfectly done fan made songs out there.
