Except Katherine Hepburn's role in Guess.... was supporting and her performance a bit one note, I agree re the other four nominees -all stellar -Dame Edith Evans, Audrey Hepburn, Anne Bancroft and Faye Dunaway. Audrey received two nominations that year from the Golden Globes for best actress in a motion picture drama for Wait Until Dark and for best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy for the great Two for the Road. Although a very difficult choice I would have checked the ballot box for Audrey

Katharine Hepburn was magnificent in Guess who's Coming to Dinner. Richly deserved the Oscar. For Hepburn knowing how ill Tracy was, knowing that this would be their last movie, the way the handled their relationship with grace and dignity.. and the fact she underplayed her role with silent looks, and tears..Kate Hepburn's likes are not known in today's Hollywood.
@umbertlambert2113 Жыл бұрын
I TOTALLY disagree. Kate the GREAT gave a maudlin performance. She was teary-eyed in almost every scene in the movie, even scenes that didn't need it. I think the prospect of Tracy's death was looming over her and she was too overcome with grief and anxiety and was distracted by it. And to think that she followed this boring performance with her career best performance in "The Lion in Winter" for which she was tied at the Oscars.

Yes, a dreamy and loving person. Audrey was standing on the side, as she had just presented the best actor oscar (Rod Steiger), shocking that Katherine Hepburn won. The critics groups gave all their awards and runner up awards to these three of the nominees- Dame Edith Evans for The Whisperers, Anne Bancroft for her unforgettable Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate and of course Audrey Hepburn for two great performances that year - Wait Until Dark and Two For The Road, at the Golden Globes that year Audrey received two nominations that year Best Actress in a Comedy Motion Picture for Two for the Road and Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for Wait Until Dark. Katherine Hepburn's role was supporting and even the director George Cuckor seems surprised that she won.
@MTMF.london2 жыл бұрын
@@155gerard Katherine Hepburn's was definitely not a supporting role. She was the main female lead in the movie with Sidney Poitier and Spencer Tracey the two male leads. Who deserved to win is always up in the air - nothing shocking about her win at all. Sometimes the right actor in the right movie wins, sometimes the wrong actor in the right movie wins. It's basically like a beauty contest - all contestants are similarly beautiful but the judges choose one particular contestant as the most beautiful for some esoteric reasons. Such is life.

Do you really think that K Hepburn was the weakest of the bunch? In the 60s this was a groundbreaking film, and I remember being stunned by Hepburn. As with all OSCARS the categories should demonstrate the best, and I favoured Hepburn in GWCTD. The following year she stunned again in The Lion in Winter. As it stands, Hepburn leads the best actress honours with four awards. Frances McDormand now has 3 best actress OSCARS, and there are numerous actresses with two awards for best actress, including the great Meryl and Ingrid (who both have a best supporting actress OSCAR). There are some women who have won best actress OSCARS, such as Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence, and for the life of me I don’t understand how they did!

This is probably one of the most competitive years for the actresses. Audrey Hepburn demonstrated different spectrum of acting in a suspense thriller film, a far cry from her usual films. Faye Dunaway rocked it in Bonnie & Clyde. She elevated the film to be a cinematic classic for all ages. Fantastic work in her first major leading role. However, I felt the award should went to Anne Bancroft. Her character had so much depth, a trapped housewife in a loveless marriage who surrendered herself to a comfortable life. Now she lives in regret. Very hard to forget.

It's been a while since I've seen The Graduate, but I got the feeling that Anne Bancroft's character is more supporting than lead. This is something I see happening with other nominees, for example, Sharon Stone in Casino, Annette Bening in American Beauty, Kate Winslet in The Reader, Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest... and I believe they have more. That doesn't change the fact that they're all absolutely amazing... In fact, it would only increase their chances of winning, in the supporting category. Especially Sharon and Annette, and Bancroft, that I completely love.

Kate Winslet was the leading of The Reader
@user-rh2io7gm1l10 ай бұрын
@@giovannyespinoza6013 No, *Kate Winslet* is definitely supporting in _The Reader._ *'Michael'* is the title character. The movie revolves around him. It's his coming-of-age story. *Winslet* just plays his MILF lover, *'Hanna,'* who comes in and out of his life over the course of thirty years. I think people get confused because *'Michael'* is played by two different actors *(David Kross* as a teenager, *Ralph Fiennes* in his forties) and *Winslet* is merely aged up in makeup. But *'Hanna'* doesn't have a lot of screen time compared to *'Michael,* from whose perspective the film is told. *Winslet* rightly won *Best Supporting Actress* at *SAG* and *Golden Globes* for _The Reader._ I don't know why *BAFTA* and the *Oscars* put her in *Best Actress in a Leading Role.*
