It's surprising to hear about a woman living in the 16th century who: survived the reign of Henry VIII, had enough money and power to speak her own mind, could fund the people she approved of, was never imprisoned in the Tower of London, and wasn't beheaded. 😊

I just love the irony that when there was a plot against Catherine Parr, it was at least in part because Henry had tired of her and was interested in Catherine Willoughby…as if Catherine Willoughby didn’t have the same, if not more, “heretical”views! I was also intrigued to learn about how she developed reformist views, especially since it was something I puzzled over, how a daughter of someone so loyal to Catherine of Aragon ended up having to flee into exile in Mary’s reign because of difference of religion.

Excellent points! It seems like the courtiers could hardly have a sense of safety, at least for any length of time. This woman went through some horrible things and losing her sons is something I can’t imagine being able to live through. I’m the Mum of one child, a son, who makes me very proud! How draining it must have been to have to dance around the religious and political views that so easily erupt into a negative environment!

My grandmother was a Willoughby and I’ve traced my ancestors back to one of the Barons. A William Willoughby was a second son of a second son and came to America as indentured, the family started out here poor, poor, poor, and variously did well, and not so well. In modern times they did OK. I find the ties to King Henry VIII’s court to be interesting and kind of amusing. I visited England in 2013 and was lucky enough to tour Wollaton Hall, the family seat in Nottingham, and Bore Place, the other Manor in the south of England. It was a thrill to see both places. Loved your video!

I'm so glad to be among your subscribed and would be a contributor but for financial inability (pensioner in penury) concerns. KZfaq is great and I consider your channel among the top for my part at least. I've done a pretty exhausting genealogy and it's really fun to learn about the time in which they lived. I'm yet another descendant of Mary Boleyn Carey (my middle name is Carey) and it makes history a much more interesting journey to be able to point and say, "I'm related to her/him!". This one is so typical of its era and especially Brandon.

WOW! I mean WOW! This is a lady I really would have liked to have known & talked to. While she went against her mother's faith, I have to think her mother would have been proud of her for "sticking to her guns". I also have to say I am a HUGE fan of Philippa G. & her FICTIONAL novels about all of this. I consider them great reads & well written, but fiction. However, they have led me to learn the true history. I have literally listened to these audio books probably a hundred times. If not for that I would NEVER have kept straight Brandon & Katherine and all of that. I don't know how you do it. This was great!

I’ve always been curious what your thoughts are on all of the remakes of king Henry the eighth story and how they always portrayed him as or really all of the characters as being super hot and good-looking lol I feel like it adds to the romanticism, and yet Melody stories are really very romantic. so I’m just curious what you think? Also, do you have a video about Elisabeth of Austria? I was watching a documentary about Vienna last night, and he mentioned her in passing, and I thought it would be interesting to hear video about her.

A Venetian ambassador rhapsodized about how attractive Henry VIII was *when the king was young.* We all think of Henry as the Charles Laughton stereotype: obese, balding, ugly, etc. But young Henry was over 6 feet tall with fair skin, red hair, and the physique of an athlete. He was trained in sports as well as letters and was universally acclaimed as gracious, courteous & kind when he ascended the throne. We all tend to forget what this young Henry was like.

I am new to you. I think the algorithms sent me. I am in possession of my Great grandmother's scrapbook/journals in 2 volumes. I finally, at 57 years old, started reading the first one, Early Days in Europe. Her father was the Paris partner of CF Hovey, a late 19th Century department store chain, with offices in NYC and Boston as well. Napoleon III and Eugenie were the monarchs. History tells us that Napoleon and Eugenie went into exile in London, with his route being indirect, but does history know exactly how Eugenie and her Lady in Waiting escaped? I do, it's written on page 17. Would really be honored with your advice on how I can tell my Great grandmother's amazing story, with pictures and letters.

I was very interested in the fact that Catherine and her husband and children went into exile. I have wondered in other Reading the Past vlogs why men in danger during these and past times haven't done the same. Also, glad when you convert the money to modern day amounts. Especially interesting is not all the pound amount but in terms of other goods and services. However, I continue to be disappointed in UTubes inability to get closed captioning correct. I noticed several times that when Dr Kat said King Henry the VIII it was translated to King Henry the VII. They also used dour instead of dower.
