Kathy McCarty’s iconic album Dead Dog’s Eyeball: the Songs of Daniel Johnston is now out of print and was only offered on CD. Now that the rights to the recording have reverted back to Kathy, she plans to press the record on 180 gram vinyl, remastered by Joe Gartwirt, as a lavish gatefold double album with expanded art and several additional tracks. McCarty is crowdfunding the project, as she never made any money on it whatsoever, due to the types of record contracts prevalent at the time.
Dead Dog’s Eyeball is considered by thousands to be the definitive interpretation of Daniel Johnston’s music for a wider audience. It was #35 in the Village Voice “Pazz and Jop Poll” the year it was released, and here is what the critics have to say about it:
“...This is gorgeous, throat lump-inducing music....McCarty fleshes out Johnston’s home-recorded sketches into an eclectic assortment of torch ballads, guitar rockers, and beer-hall singalongs, and beguiling art pop...Highly Recommended.” - Spin (November, 1994)
“This is the album that made it impossible for anyone to dismiss Daniel Johnston as just another outsider artist. ...Dead Dog's Eyeball, originally released in 1994, remains the premier articulation of Johnston's songwriting prowess... No serious Austin music collection should be
without it." - Greg Beets/The Austin Chronicle (April, 2005)
“...Other people have tried covering Daniel’s songs before...mostly without much joy. Maybe they’ve all been in too much awe. Kathy treats Daniel’s songs with due reverence, love and humour-and one helluva kick in her voice...” - Melody Maker (August, 1995)
