They were all young at this performance but already great musicians for the time. Ian Gillan on vocals along with Ritchie Blackmore on guitars and Roger Glover on bass was 25 at the time. Ian Paice on drums was 22 years old. And the "old" guy was the magical (R.I.P) John Lord on hammond organ who was 29 at the time.

Ian Gillan (vocals) of Deep Purple: "... it’s the influences that each individual member brought into the original band that gave Deep Purple its variety. You know, we cover everything from big band, to swing music, to rock music, and there’s a lot of humor in our music along with light-hearted touches. There’s a lot of texture and dynamics, which are essential to our music. That’s important, and it’s why we get so much joy from what we’re playing. When you’ve got a diet with as much variety as that, you don’t get fed up with it it. There’s always something unique to keep you interested."

Adult audiences were expected to behave in those day, especially if the performance was being recorded or filmed. Making noise and being loud was seen as disrespectful to both the performers and other audience members. Think of classical music, jazz and night club singer performances, silence was key. Teenagers were different, like those seeing acts like Elvis or The Beatles. You can check out many performances from the era where the audience is silent. This of course changed with the emergence and evolution of Rock & Roll.

The "piano" was actually a Hammond organ and needed a master like Jon Lord to play it. Not only did he have two sets of keys to contend with, but also the levers to push and pull above those. Can you imagine the proficiency you need for that?

Since certain viewers are seemingly having trouble with the spelling of certain member's names, these are the correct spellings. Ian Gillan (not Gillian) - vocals. Ritchie Blackmore (not Richie) - guitar. Jon Lord (not John) - organ (1941-2012 - oh! The unrivaled master of his craft). So far, I didn't read anybody misspelling Roger Glover (bass) or Ian Paice (drums), but for clarity: there they are also.

Another great Deep Purple performance would be most definitely the live performance of the song “Burn” at the California Jam. My son took me to see Deep Purple in concert for my 62nd birthday in 2017. I had missed them in 1975 because their stage collapsed while setting up and they cancelled. But to me the most amazing part of this video is... the reaction of the audience. Crickets. Ian Gillan-Vocals, Ritchie Blackmore-Guitar, Roger Glover-Bass, Jon Lord-Organ and Ian Paice-Drums. For another take on Ian Gillan, check out his performance as the voice of Jesus in the original recording of "Jesus Christ Superstar" by Andrew Lloyd Weber. Other Deep Purple songs I still listen to that you'll enjoy are "Lazy", "Hiway Star" and "Space Truckin". These songs are all from the 1972 album Machine Head.

You picked a stellar performance to watch!!! I loved the album In Rock when it came out in 1970 and the live version. Oh yezzz! ❤❤👍👍🤘🤘🎶. I really enjoyed your reaction to this. We had such great music in the yesteryears.

I`ve watched some others reactions to the Deep that were tame, BUT ya`ll acted as if ya`ll were right there in early 70``s rockin it out with the rest of us and yes this was a tv show in England...I was a wee lad when my older brother brang the album home, cranked it up on his stereo in our basement bedroom...I was left handed so Ian Paice was my inspiration to drop the trombone and pick up the sticks...back into the Deep for more, eh ladies ?

This was filmed at Granada Television studios in Manchester, England on July 17, 1970. There were several other songs filmed for this television special called “Doing Their Thing: Deep Purple” that’s also on KZfaq.

Back in the day the audience was told to behave which meant no screaming or jumping around.

Yes back in the day, it was considered rude to be loud or make noise as part of a studio audience on tv, plus they didn't want excess noise obstructing the audio, as technology was not as advanced.
