I have been hunting the thrift stores for months looking for the perfect dining set to makeover for our own dining room and just wasn't able to find what I was looking for but then a few weeks ago facebook marketplace delivered - a solid wood pedestal table with 4 chairs, in great condition, free on the side of the road!

A tad green/olive pigment in your final mineral spirit wash or a little in your stain, will reduce the red, I do it when mahogany is too red and I need to knock it back some.. beautiful job!

When you say “pigment”….do you mean some sort if dye/coloring? Or a particular color if stain that has green/olive in it? Do you have a product/brand that you could recommend? I have a mahogany piece that I’m about to refinish & would love to reduce the redness in the wood. Thank you!

@@smcgill491just search KZfaq for how to mix a custom wood toner.. and from there its trial and error, start in a area easy to deal with if you don't like your mix, like a bottom corner and go small..and stay away from stains with a red undertone. Wood dyes or resin tints work best for me..and wood conditioner is your best friend..

Easy to cleanI was looking for something that wasn't the traditional white and with more of a modern feel. This fit the bill beautifully. I put it together with no problems, by myself in under an hour.Make sure you double check where you place the drawer tracks before screwing down. I had one track that needed to be aligned with different holes than the rest.

Yay!!! I finally found a video like this.. My husband found a free dining set and buffet cabinet. it’s been sitting in the garage for a month. Thank you katy. You are amazing! You gave me a great idea and motivation to do it. Now my dilemma is should i paint the table legs black or white. thank you again!!

I think the choices you made were based on your personal space...so they were your perfect match for the rest of your space. I think that set was so lovely to begin with. You had good bones to work with. The pieces look very stylish. You have very good taste. Thank you for sharing. I have no work space at all to do refinishing. I am poor so I sometimes can afford great second hand. I moved to my present apartment. Hurricane Sandy came and we were all moved out temporarily. I went to my son's apartment...the roof caved in about two inches from my body so from there I stayed with a family for about two months. FEMA evaluated all the damage to our apartments and gave us some help. With that help, I fashioned a country cottage style home. Everything came together like a beautiful painting. Three years later, bed bugs arrived and decided to move in. I lost everything!!! I had to get a cot to sleep on, new pillows, and everything else. I have had the heebie-jeebies ever since...lol. Now I have a look that is made of palettes and odd bits and bobs from anywhere I could get them...free!!! If I could do what you do, then I could refinish and refine but I do get lots of compliments on my new look. Funny...how you can spend some money...have a great place...lose it...have nothing...and finally get something for nothing! I would love to be able to do what you do. I think it is so great to watch people transform and improve on whatever they can.

Wow!!!! Just seeing this video. I have the same shaped table, pottery barn, but was Preowned when I purchased it, but began Sanding, immediately realized it was not wood, but underneath same as yours was Seem to be wood, quality isn’t known, but painted over the top with chalk paint, and a clear coat, still not happy, I want to really get down to the of that top surface, thank you so much for this video. I know that 8 months late.

Looks amazing! Wipe on poly is just thinned down ordinary poly, so you need 2 to 3 times the coats to get equivalent cover. You might want to do 3 more coats on the top of the table for durability.

I absolutely love how it turned out! Your work is beautiful! I have a large oak table 7 (one broke) chairs, as well as a huge buffet and hutch I purchase about 30 years ago. It is all handmaid, furniture by local mennonites. It is golden oak and beautiful but alas I have grown tired of it. I would love to redo the table surface with some kind of bleach or whitewash to take the yellow out. I think I would also,like to paint the chairs black.

I believe that your table is made of red oak and white oak. This was an incredibly lucky find! I appreciate that you took the dark stain off of the table top, so that the beauty of the wood shows and the black sets it off nicely!!!

I absolutely love it. You have inspired me to challenge myself to redo my very own dining set. I have two free dining tables, one with chairs. I love the look you have accomplished. The wood showing and painting the lower parts of the table. Simply gorgeous. Im thinking purple/lavender from Country Chic. Don’t see a lot of this color in Dining Rooms in America but I fell in love with the color. Thank you for your fabulous teachings. You are an excellent teacher.

That was a high priced and beautiful set in its day, but still not useable as we do today. You are like me and I dislike that red/orange color almost all furniture and floors had back before poly. They really had to use that orange shellac, which just gets worse over time. I often use a very slight blue or green wash to tone the color down. I have found that household bleach also will take the pink and yellow orange colors back. That slightly pickled finish is great with the black. All is very updated. The chairs look modern painted. Most importantly it is now durable for everyday use. Thanks for the whole thing and that Command paint, I never heard of it.

Wow... You are a beast with that paint sprayer (please forgive my lack of knowledge regarding the correct name of the tool)! Your finishes are just like factory finishes, and you look so comfortable using the sprayer with so many different products. That in itself is a talent that I assume took a bit of time to develop. Anyway, your color choices for all of your renovated pieces are just stunning, and this one is no exception. I love the matte black, and leaving the wood to show through the top of the table is genius! Great job, and thanks for the beautiful inspiration! You really are quite an artist when it comes to bringing furniture back from the edge of a landfill, as you suggest. Great job!

Have you ever had that problem with dining room chairs? I actually picked up a set of 6 dining room chairs from a neighbor who had put them on the curb for garbage pick up and after examining them in the daylight some did have a few splits in the leg. I wish I could upload a pic to show you. Anyways any advice would help, love your channel 🤗

I would like 2 see an old stereo cabinet refinished/ redesigned; the kind of entertainment console that has a record player, am/fm radio, & tape-player in one cabinet. It would be fun if it could b allowed 2 b funtional but maybe w/o the radio or tape player function(s)...Modern outside, old-school inside.

I bought at round solid wood table (local marketplace) to refinish and love this top! I was thinking of a lighter color for the base but now I am rethinking. Your work is excellent!
