Katy Hill is a very widely played tune in old time and bluegrass. In this fiddle lesson I give two versions. The first is a basic and fairly simple one, with some suggestions for bowing. The second is based on the playing of Sarah Watkins from Nickel Creek. This has some double stops, blue notes, a swing feel, and some triplets- all common features of Texas fiddling.
I use on-screen sheet music throughout and a free pdf is available to anyone who subscribes (see below). There are plenty more video lessons of old time and bluegrass fiddle tunes elsewhere on The Fiddle Channel.

How closely related is the Nickle Creek version to “sally Johnson”?

Katy Hill was written by Clayton MacMitchen of The Skillet Lickers, says Bill Monroe. I would have to guess that Arthur Smith wrote Sally Johnson. It’s said that Arthur and Paul Warren are you only fiddlers that played it true to the original composition. I play Warren’s version. His is quite powerful.

And I forgot to tell you that yes, Katy Hill and Sally Johnson are nearly the same tune.

@@TheFiddleChannel I guess it might be a southern mountain name, I heard it referred to as Katy Hill, but in Galax we always just call in Sally Anne Johnson and attribute our version to Clark Kessinger
