So we went to review Katz Delicatessen and their famous pastrami sandwich and our thoughts were it was overpriced and overrated. If you are a tourist in New York City, then beware. Katz,s was just a good reasonably priced deli until "when Harry met Sally"..then it became a tourist destination. Edit: Rents in New York are so out of control that ‘When Harry Met Sally’ probably saved Katz’s from becoming a Citibank. Guess you take the good with the not so good.

Katz's was famous long before "When Harry Met Sally". Pastrami is always overly-expensive. Delis have somehow managed to create a mystique about the brining, the smoking, the steaming, and even, absurdly enough, the slicing! If you ever get to Montreal, try Schwartz's Deli's Montreal Smoked Meat. It's almost as expensive, but has a more distinct flavour and is more succulent. Make sure you get "medium-fat", or "fat" though...all deli meat is inedible if you ask for "lean". P.S.: The bagels are better in Montreal too...St. Urbain.

In I'm going to try to be very delicate with my wording. Because I don't want to be accused of something I am not but you will find that the Mystique about the pastrami is only ever in big cities with a decent demographic of God's chosen people By the way I hope you appreciate the irony of saying how ridiculous it is to mystify Pastrami and corned beef and then you go on to say where people should go to get these things.

Schwartz's is nowhere near the prices at Katz's. Their sandwich is slightly smaller than Kat'z and does not come with that little piece of pickle (which is worth very little). The price of a Schwartz smoked meat sandwich is around $15 - $16 CAD (including taxes). Katz's is at least $25 USD plus tax so that comes to about $35 CAD ! So about 1/2 the price (taking the smaller size and little pickle into consideration. Taste-wise, Schwartz's is very good - but they run hot and cold. Sometimes the meat would be overly dry. IMHO, in Montreal, Schwartz's is not the best place for smoked meat (mainly due to their inconsistency), there are several other joints offering great stuff (e.g. The Main Deli, Smoked Meat Pete).

You're right on! I've been to Schwartzs many times. I always look for a different restaurant to see if it matches Schwartz. My cousin from Montreal keeps me updated! Overall, Schwatzs still is most consistent. There's a newish place b on the West Island that's getting some great reviews, don't remember the name! When it comes to bagels St. Urbain Bagels ships to the USA via Goldbelly. However, I've found several outstanding bagel shops in Outremont!

What's the TIP for. This is a self order self serve place. You literally have to stand in line outside then wait inside and go to different counters with tickets, etc.

I know that tips are a huge part of the American way of life. In the UK it bolsters someones income and is by no means compulsory. I have learned to beleive its not quite the same in the USA. In fact, hasnt the definition changed in the USA for a tip and now has become compulsory and therefore it is no longer a tip? Is it a way the owners are able to avoid paying higher wages to staff? How does tipping work in the US ?
@Mkayexplores

@@hullster9970 well I'm in Canada and it has become compulsory. Tables over 4 has mandatory 18 to 20% added on to your bill. Service has gotten worse over time and servers don't seem to care one bit since they'll be getting a tip regardless. Ask them to pack your food and they rudely hand you a box to fill it yourself. I have never been thanked or ever had anyone acknowledge the tip i gave them. Once i tipped 27% and not even a thanks. Getting ridiculous now

I went there 5 months ago for the first time and honestly, a bit of a letdown. Not so much because of the money, but the corned beef sandwich just wasn't that great, almost surprisingly so, considering all the hype. It's actually very thick and chunky, not thin sliced at all really and all sandwiches like this( French dip sandwiches, corned beef, pastrami) should really be thin sliced, those taste the best and are the most flavorful. It was still a bit expensive. And contrary to what people are saying, they do accept both cards and money, they have a separate place in the back for taking cards and up front by the entrance they take cash. Most important thing, don't lose the ticket they give you when you walk in for any reason, you give it back to them when you pay and leave, $50 charge if you lose the ticket for any reason, so hold on to it no matter what. Also lastly, if you really want to get the "real" NY sandwich,go to Sarges Deli, bar none, the best, miles above Katz's.

I went there last week and it was expensive as you say but I felt that it was it’s own experience really. All food in NYC is damn expensive and this was something different. I would definitely still recommend it to anyone going to NYC though - the sandwich itself is the best I have ever had and yet so simple. And they did accept card payments when I went so that’s something they’ve obviously improved since you guys went.

Still but a teenager in 1965 I moved to New York into a 4-floor walk-up just a little further east of Katz’s. One day I stepped into the deli, my first visit, and ordered a roast beef on rye. The big ruddy-faced man behind the counter wearing a butchers’ apron and a little round cap balanced upon his giant head sliced the beef and assembled a most beautiful sandwich. I eyed his masterpiece and asked, “Got any catsup?”. His already ruddy complexion turned bright red barely holding back his anger, “We AIN’T GOT NO CATSUP!” That was the day I learned that you never should defile a most perfect roast beef sandwich with catsup.

Credit Card Pro-Tip: The cashier at the front only accepts cash. However, if you want to pay with a credit card (including contactless), there’s a special register by the beverages where someone can ring you up too. They don’t like to advertise this, and the front cashier was rather unkind to force you to use an ATM (and probably pay fees).

Another great review, production and presentation. You're absolutely spot on. I live in Manhattan and go to Katz's twice a year. Still the best pastrami sandwich in NYC. Yes, the prices are high, but so are delis like Pastrami Queen, 2nd Avenue Deli, Ben's, and Mendy's. Sarge's is the most reasonable but still high. That said, pastrami is expensive to produce. I can't even fathom how much Katz's pastrami sandwich would cost if the family didn't own the property?

I knew Abe from sometime between 1954 and 1957 (I was VERY young). My late father was an insurance broker and sold Abe the policy for the original part of the original location on Second Ave. There was only ever one clue in the murder: The same gun was used in a murder in Yonkers. By now the perp is probably either dead or in prison for something else. My family used to eat there every Sunday, on the way back from visiting my grandmother in Bensonhurst. I feel guilty for not getting to the 33rd St. location more often. Abe was such a wonderful man. They called him "The Mayor of Second Ave."

People complain about the cost, but they give you more than twice the meat than other del’s, and they give you pickles at no extra charge.if you notice the cutter sliced the pastrami and put on the plate so that you can taste, so that you are satisfied before he makes the sandwich. Put a nice tip in his cup and he will add some more pastrami. My drink of choice is Dr Brown’s Cel-ray Tonic, or Cream Soda.

I am a lifelong NYer. Many great Jewish delis have disappeared. As a result, Katz is one of the last games in town. The pastrami is tasty, but they hack it, as opposed to slice it. As a result, the sandwiches collapse and fall apart. A great sandwich should be constructed better.

Crazy price for what you get tbh but it seems popular. Two things that kind of put me off is how crowded and noisy it looks and you really could get at least another sandwich out of that amount of meat they give you, that's just too much for one sandwich.

It was very famous way before Harry Met Sally and that's such a third level association with the place. It is what it is. Cash? So what?? Its a once a year visit knowing ahead of time its expensive. Bring cash (but I believe they take credit cards and you are not correct about that.) Forget When Harry Met Sally. Nobody cares about that when they think Katz's in NYC. Its the history, a place to visit once a year, very NYC ....just a historic place despite the overpriced sandwiches. Everything in the restaurant world...post pandemic...is EXPENSIVE!

The amount of meat on a single sandwich in the US is something else. Oy vey! 😵‍💫 Why this country keeps expecting tips on top of outrageous prices for a “walk in” sandwich beats me.

Exactly ! Fuel , shipping, parking , wages , the meat itself as well as the labor that goes into it are all more expensive. In fact, $24 for a sandwich that can feed two people that actually raved about it is a bargain. to say it's overrated and overpriced is ridiculous

Comparatively, I ate at a salt beef sandwich Beigel Bakery on Brick Ln this past Aug and can honestly say it didn’t compare to Katz’s corned beef. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it and it was a bargain but it fell short of a Harold’s or Katz’s sandwich and not having seating and a line outside didn’t make it an experience one gets at Katz’s either. Again, I really liked Brick Lane and my culinary experience in London (cannot get over a private dinner party at F&M, then a private tour of the closed store) and hope to return to London again soon!

I once won a quiz by performing that Meg Ryan scene in the film round. It was a work do organised by solicitors we use. We won the whole thing by one point. One of my managers on retirement said in her 30 or so years at the company my performance was her most memorable moment! But of course I was very ... very ... drunk lol. That is a mental price for a sandwich. No doubt the meat looked good but for me there was too much of it. Could you taste the bread? My score 7/10. .

Had this argument loads of times in America , why should the customer tip ? , its compulsory there ...It’s down to the employer to make there wages up the wages ! , a tip should be at the customers discretion not automatically paid !!! America is getting expensive !! No dought about it Lee .

The irony! I was literally going to put it in the comments to visit this place! First thing I always associate with this place is THAT SCENE from When Harry Met Sally!! Even Adam Richman from Man v Food rated this place highly. It always seems to be very busy there. Looks like you went there on a 'quiet' day. I know you normally have to get a ticket, then you order. I've never been to NY but my mother was there in the sixties when she was a nurse at Yonkers General. Loving the vids as always 🙂

I used to live a few blocks away and the only thing that stopped me going there more often was the queues - and its anything but all tourists. One issue is that rising rents in the Nolita/Soho area to the west are creating issues for places like this. Its not as if they make their money off booze sales. So that Sandwich, with a lot of meat is expensive. If its packed, or if you just want to sample Jewish treats, there are quite a few other places nearby, for example Russ and Daughters.

Glad you enjoyed the best pastrami sandwich in the world. They are cash only so as to avoid paying credit card companies a fee for using their service. Who cares about convenience for the customer, when there is always a line out the door? I agree that is it way overpriced, though (but not overrated!). Still, I don't know what you did to pay $40+ dollars - this sandwich is $22.95 and a soda is about $2.50 more. Also keep in mind that this sandwich is big enough to feed two people.

To each his own but this wasn’t the best pastrami sandwich I’d ever had. It was really good, but not the best. And they really threw me off when they put my Reuben in the microwave. A $25 sandwich should go nowhere near a microwave. All in all it was a good meal and I’d recommend people try it for themselves but I was expecting better. I’d give it a 7.5 based on the two sandwiches I had.

2nd Ave Deli on 33rd is about 23 bucks for their pastrami so it's right up there. Epstein's up in Westchester is about 15 bucks, so if you want pastrami or corned beef your going to pay. But even Mickey D's is over 10 bucks for a large meal so I'd rather spend the money on a huge pastrami sandwich that might do for 2 meals.

I went to Katz Deli over 10 years ago. I got a pastrami sandwich with a side of fries and a drink plus tip. And by the time you factor in your taxi there and back to your hotel with the tip for the taxi driver, it came to well over $125 for lunch. The sandwich was very good but it wasn't $125 good
