Tony...I am really enjoying your demos on various digital pianos. I been visiting piano stores here on Vancouver Island, in particular, Victoria, B. C. and have decided on a Yamaha CLP685. To be on the floor where the pianos are, is the only way to make a satisfying decision and I thank you for your demo's. Your playing definitely adds to the enjoyment in making a decision. Thanks again! Randall Krall, Nanaimo, B. C. CANADA.

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately the sound reproduction when recording using microphones never sounds very good. It does not do the pianos justice - especially when most people watch these movies using very small built-in speakers of a laptop, tablet or mobile phone! Best to try and see the pianos in a shop so you can hear them properly.

So Roland and Yamaha won't provide a tangible visual of their action. Kawai are obviously proud to do so and that means a lot. I'm assuming it's similar if not the same as their MP11 piano. The sound seems great too so I think a visit is on the cards later in the year!

Hi Tony, great stuff, as always! Is there a noticeable different between the GF2 (CA78) and GFC (CA58) action?
@bonnersmusic
@bonnersmusic 6 жыл бұрын
Many thanks! The GFC is the Compact version of the Grand Feel II action found in the CA78 which has the Ebony touch keys in addition to the Ivory Touch. There is certainly a difference in the way that they feel and respond. Which you would prefer is unfortunately very much down to personal taste. I find the Compact action in the CA58 much lighter than the GF2 action in the CA78, but the Pivot point on compact action is much closer than the CA78. Also it is worth noting that the Control Panel on the CA58 is the same as the previous CA67 and CA97, whereas the new CA78 has the Touch Screen and the additional new voices available. Feel free to contact us on 01323 636140, or pop into one of our stores if you need any further assistance from our Piano Specialists.

Hey guys, thanks ever so much for your always informative videos! I'd really appreciate your advice on this new touchscreen system, as I'm quite concerned that some software malfunction or bug would render the piano far quicker useless than the old button systems. What would one do if such a touchscreen would break down after warranty expires? Would it not be somewhat more future-proof to go with prior versions without touch screens? Many thanks!

@bonnersmusic
@bonnersmusic 6 жыл бұрын
Both the CA78 and CA98 are excellent piano's, as is the CLP685. The action on the CLP685 is heavier than the Kawai's, you may or may not prefer this. I would advise coming in to either our Reigate or Eastbourne store where you can try all of these models side by side. Choosing the Digital piano that is right for you will be very personal to your own taste and experience. @bonnersmusic

Many thanks! I wouldn't say that one is better or worse than another, however, the Grand Feel Compact is slightly lighter in touch than the Grand Feel 2. It really is down to personal preference. I would recommend coming to either our Eastbourne (South Coast, BN21 3JN) or Reigate (Junction 8, M25) showrooms and trying them for yourself side by side.

Hi Tony, great video. Many thanks. I find it interesting what you say about your guess that Kawai have adjusted the action compared with the CA97. I had the opportunity to compare the CA98 and the CS11 recently (I haven't played the CA97 but I assume the CS11 has the same feeling action as it). I noticed a difference in the action too. To me, I wondered if the CA98's action was a bit heavier? I noticed my fingers becoming more tired compared to playing the CS11. Can I ask how in what way you found the action different compared to the CA97? Heavier or lighter? I mentioned the difference to Matt at Kawai UK and he seemed unaware of any change which had been made.

Do the CA78 and CA98 have half-pedal capability like the Yamaha CLP675 and CLP685? For someone only interested in piano performance - realism and responsiveness of touch, pedals and sound, could you give me a sense of the pros and cons of these new Kawai and Yamaha offerings?
@bonnersmusic
@bonnersmusic 6 жыл бұрын
Yes these models do have the Half-pedal capabilities. Preference between these models is purely down to personal taste. The features and capabilities of these instruments are almost identical on paper. Each model has the ability to amend and tweek the sounds to be exactly what you want using either the on-board user interface or wirelessly using a smart device. The actions on these models are excellent but just like acoustic pianos, they feel very different to each other. I would recommend coming to one of our showrooms and trying these models side by side. Only then will you be able to decide which one sounds and feels best to you.

My other serious question relates to longevity. I have a Yamaha U3A, bought 2nd hand a few years ago, which is some 30 years old and still magnificent in touch and tone. I bought a Casio Celviano mid-range digital for my adult son just 3 years ago (he lives overseas). I visited him last month and found that the piano is starting to fail in many respects. Are these semi-professional Yamaha and Kawai digital pianos expected to last for decades like their analogue siblings, or will their electronics deteriorate like I have seen with my son's Celviano?
@2024Warren
@2024Warren 6 жыл бұрын
I received an in-depth response from Kawai to this same question. Essentially, the respondent said that the Kawai CA78 is built to a very high standard and carries a long warranty which is rarely expected to be needed. But, unlike acoustic pianos, it is not designed to be regularly opened up, tuned, and adjusted. Additionally, its electronics and switches might be affected by extreme conditions and by continuous demanding use. So it would be impossible to compare its longevity and resilience to my Yamaha U3A, or to make realistic claims about lasting for decades. The respondent did suggest that the fully acoustic but digitally enhanced AnyTime pianos, and the new Novus NV10 hybrid grand, do allow you to maintain the piano in the same way you would a fully acoustic model. Yamaha's response was not as in-depth but substantially the same.

Hello, Tony! How ca78-ca98 are in compare with ca67-ca97? Is "piano mode" sound render way better then ca67/ca97 sound render? I mean can you really hear the difference comparing those models? What can you say about sound system onboard compare to ca67/ca97? I already bought the CA 48. I feel like the sound is very decent but i am missing some bass on the lower keys. On the other hand if i put in my studio headphones the sound is absolutely brilliant and delivers bass, too. It is so amazing how it acts like a real grand piano when pressing the keys very slightly its quite and calm and when pushing them in heavily it gets so loud and expressive. Anyway the sound of the speakers is good, but i expected just a little more from a 1800€ product.

I had the privilege of trying the CA78 and CA98 recently. They were very nice but the touch wasn’t very convincing, even if it was the Grand Feel II action. Then I moved over to the acoustic Kawai K15 and I just loved how it feels. I’m genuinely wondering: Is my inexperience with pianos showing through? Am I being foolish for disliking the action of the CA98 and preferring the K15? Any opinions?

Not at all! Digital Pianos have come on leaps and bounds in terms of the feel in recent years, but there are not many substitutes for the real thing if that is what you are used to playing. The most experienced players will notice the subtle differences that others may not. I would recommend popping into one of our stores in Eastbourne or Reigate and trying the many different Digital and Acoustic Pianos we have available. You may find that you prefer the action on another piano to these? There are so many to try and they all vary so much in the way that they feel. We are bound to find you something that you like!

No, I can only tell about the CA98: Totally untested electronics, crashes, bugs and problems w/o end: When headphones are connected: Crash and factory reset, no navigation in USB files possible, Bluetooth audio is noisy and unusable, parameters can not be changed (scrolling) w/o changing parameters by error. No realistic sound: Stick with a used CA97 instead. Way better and cheaper.

The sound I hear in this CA98 video is not the sound of my CA98 piano. Here you can hear a balanced and harmonious sound, as well as sweet and pleasant. My CA98 that I received 2 days ago does not resemble anything: it is unpleasant and unbalanced, there is a tremendous difference between playing soft to strong, to the point that it is scary to play hard, but on the other hand the sound of soft touching is off and without lifetime. In the video has a piano parameter changed? In that case, would you be so kind as to explain the changes, please? I am one step away from returning the piano. Thank you. A greeting.

I like Kawai's cabinets the most, because only Kawai has this straight "wall" behind the keys, just like real acoustic grands. Neither Yamaha nor Roland offer this. But I don't like that this big screen can't be covered or completely switched off during playing. Unfortunately, on the video it wasn't show, whether it's possible to switch off screen, and if so, how it looks like being switched off. Because when it's ON, it's really would be annoying for me. Ideally, Kawai had to make the same cover, as for CS11.

Unfortunately, in my humble opinion, the CA98 samples in the PIANIST mode do not live up to all the hype. Let me explain: Try playing the Demo songs and selecting SK-EX Concert Grand - which is the Chopin Scherzo No.2. And in the demo this famous piece really sounds quite nice on the CA98 Soundboard / speaker setup. However (!) if you then select the SK-EX Concert Grand in Pianist mode and have a go at playing this piece by Chopin - well it sounds ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LIKE the piano on the demo. The sound is very thin and even sounds quite boxy: I find this especially so in the Octave below middle-C on the keyboard. The strange thing is that thing improve somewhat when using a pair of Headphones: I use a pair of Bose QC15's and things are then a little better. And so at the moment the verdict is still out - are the SK-EX Concert Grand samples not up to the job or, is it all being let down by a cheap speaker system in the CA98 (4 x low cost paper-cone speakers). It would be interesting to hear from other Kawai owners - especially ones that have the Novus model. Because the NV-10 and the CA98 share so much of the Technology, and so maybe share the same issues. (I have not had the opportunity to try out the Novus to compare). Comments based on software v1.0.2

Tom F Wright im really not an expert, but all the songs and demos in the CA 78 are like "flat" or stick too much with the metrónomo. It have no emotion at all. Sorry for bad english btw

Yes, I've never been very keen on the built-in demo songs - they do lack emotion and feeling, as you say. I think these pianos always sound much better when played by a human pianist, who can respond to the feedback of the instrument.

The Casio VL-Tone has a far superior piano sound than either of these models.
