I prefer the sound of this Yamaha, but my past touch tests give Kawai acoustic pianos crisper, more responsive action. I find the gradient weight of the lower-string Yamaha action to be more realistic. All Yamahas I have played have a mushier, more sluggish feel. Might I ask for audio samples of the other voice selections ? Any observations on the pedal effects & mechanism ? 🎹

I've always found Yamaha too mechanical in every way possible, from the touch to the tone, and even feel that way about their acoustic grand pianos. Steinway feels too buttery smooth in comparison and sounds bell-like. But kawai just seems to bridge the gap perfectly between those two things for me

Thank you for the technical detail. By "mellow", do you mean less bright ? (It's Bösendorfer, not Bozendorfer, ya Bozo.) BTW, I believe the hallmark of the Bösendorfer concert grand is the clarity in the extreme high and low strings, in addition to its unmatched responsive action .

I don't think Kawai's tone/timbre is "better" than Yamaha. The Kawai timbre has often times less brilliance, similar to turning the treble knob down in a stereo. For the piece played, that type of piano sound with rolled-off treble is more suitable, which is why people here seem to prefer the Kawai. But that doesn't make this Kawai better. The same effect can be pretty much achieved on the Yamaha by turning down the brilliance (which is a parameter available). Acoustic pianos have a fixed piano sound that you cannot change (although a piano technician can modify its tone), but a digital piano is a different story. Digital pianos don't have the same level of unique character that an acoustic piano has. As I said, you can get that Yamaha sound dark, muddy and soft like a Kawai and vice versa.

But, in my opinion, if you listen to the "voice" of the Yamaha in both the CFX and Bosendorfer voices, it's more expressive and a bit "edgy." However, the Kawai is lusher, fuller, and washes the sound more. But they both have their appealing aspects to their sound, in my opinion. I don't know why people always look for "better" rather than really get into the sound and characteristics of each. Maybe it's because Yamaha is the "big dog" or just some don't care for them.
