Welcome to Merriam Pianos on KZfaq! We’ve got another digital piano comparison video for you today that should prove pretty handy as we head into the holiday season as we compare a couple of highly regarded home digital pianos from Roland and Kawai as we check out the Roland HP702 and Kawai CN29.
Both are priced quite close together, and both pianos are some of the most popular home digital pianos in the upper mid-range part of the market. In fact, you could say these two digital pianos are direct competitors.

Background
If you’ve dove into the digital piano world at all, you’ve probably noticed that the $2,000 USD price point is a real sweet spot where the technology really takes off to deliver a powerful all around musical experience.
You can certainly see some of this in lower price points, with certain features on some models really standing out, but the $2,000 price point seems to be where the total package really starts coming together.
At this price point, you’re virtually guaranteed a good action, more substantial cabinetry, powerful speaker systems, and high fidelity sound engines.
Both the CN29 and HP702 are representative of this part of the market and deliver similar overall packages. That said, they feel and sound different, so let’s see exactly how they compare so you can decide which one might be better for you and your home.
Piano Action
The CN29 uses Kawai’s RHIII action, which is a very well-respected action in the industry and the top plastic action Kawai produces. In fact, Nord even uses this action in the Nord Grand.
The HP702 also uses Roland’s top plastic action with the PHA4, which you can find throughout the lower portion of Roland’s lineup.
Both actions use a triple sensor, escapement and have a nice texture on the keys for grip, but they have different length key sticks, different weighting, and the keybed on each feels different.
In lower price points where you can find the PHA4 action, it’s by far the best action in the class. At this price point, however, there are a lot of folks who will prefer the RHIII due to what is perceived as an increased sense of control.
Ultimately, a preference is going to come down to playing style more than anything, as really, both are very good actions.
Features & Connectivity
The connectivity options on both pianos are pretty similar with a couple of exceptions. The HP702 has discrete ¼” outputs as well as Bluetooth Audio, while the CN29 has neither.
This limits the CN29 to folks who don’t need line outputs or Bluetooth Audio, but if you’re looking for a piano for performance institutions where amplification will be required, that pretty much eliminates the CN29 from the get-go.
Both pianos have dual headphone jacks, USB, and an integrated triple pedal system, and both pianos are available in multiple finishes.
Summary
If you’re looking for a nice digital piano for the home, especially for a more advanced player, this quality category is going to be a great place to start. Both are excellent for their own reasons, but one will be a better pick for you.
