Thanks for joining us at the Merriam Pianos KZfaq channel. In this video, we’ve got the second half of our 2-part series on Kawai’s digital piano key actions.
We’ll be looking at Kawai’s various key actions that they currently use in their home digital piano and hybrid instruments. Be sure to check out part 1 for a general overview of all of their actions, and a look at the actions featured in their portable digital pianos. Please like, subscribe and hit that notification bell!
Home Digital Piano Kawai Actions
Out of Kawai’s deep stable of current key actions sitting at 9 strong, there are a total of 7 that are featured throughout their stationary home-based models, with some overlap occurring with their portable-based digital pianos.
Let’s start with the most basic and work our way up.
Responsive Hammer Compact
The RHC action features a shorter key stick and was originally built to fit into the compact ES110 digital piano. The one home-based digital piano currently featuring the RHC action is the KDP75.
Overall, this is a great action for beginners and even intermediate players that definitely serves its purpose.
It is important to understand, however that it is less expensive than other Kawai actions for a few reasons, most notable that it’s using a dual sensor instead of a triple sensor, doesn’t feature any let off and because it’s a shorter key stick, the weighting is less even from the front to the back of the key.
Responsive Hammer Compact II
The RHCII is a more advanced version of the RHC. The biggest difference is that the dual sensor has been upgraded to a triple sensor.
Why is this important? Simply, a triple sensor provides more accurate MIDI output, which means it's more capable of tackling advanced repertoire.
The RHCII can be found in the Kawai KDP-120.
Responsive Hammer III
The RHIII is felt by many critics of the piano industry to be the best plastic key action currently available.
The RHIII can be found in the CN29 and CN39, along with their upcoming replacements, the CN201 and CN301. It can also be found in the DG30.
The RHIII improves on a number of things from the RHCII. The triple sensor carries over, but the key surface is more tactile, the keystick is longer, the escapement is included, and the keybed is more reinforced.
Grand Feel Compact Wooden Action
The GFC action is an all-wooden action, and essentially a shorter version of the Grand Feel. The pivot length is similar to a plastic action, but the wood provides a better sense of weighting and superior durability.
The GFC can be found in the CA49 and CA59 Concert Artist digital pianos, and can essentially be thought of as a wooden version of the RHIII.
Grand Feel III Action
The GFIII is the most advanced entry in the Grand Feel action lineup. The keysticks lengths are extended, and all of the engineering has been improved over the previous generation Grand Feel II.
The durability of the GFIII is excellent, and features like a triple sensor, counterweights and let off make this one of the most advanced digital piano actions in the class.
The GFIII can be found in the Kawai CA79 and CA99.
NOVUS NV5S Acoustic Hybrid Action
The NV5S’s acoustic upright action is essentially the exact same Millennium III Carbon Fiber action Kawai uses in their acoustic K-200 upright piano. The only difference is that instead of a wooden hammer, there’s carbon fiber-reinforced plastic at the end of the shank that, instead of striking a string, crosses an optical sensor.
Everything else about the action is the same as the K-200. If you’re looking for a genuine upright feel in a digital piano, it does not get better than this.

Hi Stu, I would like to thank you very much for the videos you make. They gave me much insight and a lot of information. Also your personal style of doing these is amazing. I will never have the chance to buy a piano at your store myself (too many flighthours away), that gives me kind of a bad feeling for not being able to support this channel more. But you have my depest gratitude. Since i am in the market for a new piano, at the moment I am torn between Kawai ES 920 and CA 49, for the simple reason that they are at identical price-points if keyborad-stand and pedals are included in the 920. Having ruled out Yamaha, Roland, Casio etc. by just playing them in the shops here or had them myself, Iwas never really happy with the sound. You helped me a great deal with your comparisons and reviews to break the market down to these two a lot. So lets see what Christmas brings... 🙂

Thank you, Stu, for this in-depth comparison of this multitude of current kawai actions by very easy-to-be-confused names: at 20:41 (-20:56) there's a little confusion (maybe due to editing) as you leap back from the RM3 (VPC1) to the RH3 (MP7). best, andy

Awesome technical video thanks very much! It was the advanced actions vs any other company that caused me to be a Kawai fan. That said, honestly, it is hard to tolerate any of the lower end Kawai actions now. I use the GFC which is a considerable upgrade from the RH3 (next lower action.) The other day tried: ES120/RHC and it was way down from the RH3 while at least the Ca520 i tried with RHC2 came close to the RH3 in my portable ES920). Sure wish they would make a portable unit with at least Grand Feel Compact action that I could have as a backup portable keyboard. I would buy it in a N.Y. minute. Oh yea, tried the "portable" hybrid Kawai MP11SE with full Grand Feel Action and it would be great once broken in I think.... New, on the floor still quite a bit dampened swing as well as being so big and heavy at 72 lbs with no speakers; really only a pro stage keyboard you don't wanna have to move much.
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! We appreciate you tuning in and sharing your kind words. :) The GFC is a wonderful action. It would be quite cool to see it included in a portable digital piano. Perhaps, that is something Kawai will look to do with a future model. ;) In terms of the lower end actions, it is all relative to price of course. The RHC action on the ES120 is wonderful for the price, but it certainly is not as authentic or sophisticated in terms of design compared to the GFC or GF series actions. Thanks again and happy playing!

Thanks! FYI and for many out there looking for buying advice, don’t discount the ES110/120/520, framing it as mostly a cost saving because of the RHC keybeds. I have both the ES110 and the ES920, and came close at one point to selling the ES920 because I could still get the much improved sound system and UI that the ES520 has, but also get that glorious keybed. I wish Kawai would sell their Responsive Hammer Compact, RHC, to other companies- it’s lightweight, inexpensive, and has the best playing experience I’ve ever gotten from a digital. For myself, with the stiff hands of a senior, the RHC keybed is a revelation. It’s like flying, you get absolute dynamic expression, from the softest to the loudest, with an absolute minimal amount of effort, super controllable, it’s heavenly to play. People tend to automatically asume the ES110/120/520 have a lesser keybed, but for some of us, it’s the best one out there. Unfortunately, I dis-recommend the ES110/120 because the downward firing speakers sound muffled, and the UI is terrible. I highly recommend the ES520 because it has the advantage of that great keybed and improves greatly on the speakers and UI, and it’s still lightweight, it weighs about 32 pounds.

@randalgoat
@randalgoat 6 ай бұрын
Not sure what else I'd say. The ES920 is by many/most? peoples account the more serious and grand piano like action, which I don't disagree with. But a grand piano is not always the best measurement. Not all of us are looking for a practice instrument that is close enough to a grand piano that the transition is seamless. Personally I want the action that is the most effortless to play, and can deliver full, controllable dynamics, from softest to loudest. For me that action is in the ES110/120/520. The ES120 has a significant upgrade, the inclusion of the SX piano sample. If you practiced with headphones, and were primarily playing piano, then the ES120 would be a great, cost-saving board. Otherwise, I'd say the ES520 is the way to go!@@tashatomic4893

I can agree with this comment! Having played a lot on other digital Keyboards (Roland having the worst action I think with PHA-4 or Korg that was a little better but still too heavy) i developed some tendonitis after time, but not with Kawai RHC that was a true revelation. I have myself the 120 and it is real quality and has comparable touch to my acoustic upright Bechstein 8.

Absolutely brilliantly presented and straight to the point. This i what i wish more channels were like. Ill subscribe shortly. I have a Mp9500 the second version of the original wooden keybed. And had often wondered whether to get the lightweight 110 for gigging thus replacing my Casio PX 330. Id have preferred the next 120 model but alas no midi dins but now the 110 with midi dins is out of production. How silly is that? Loosing some gigging musos along the way. Why are many manufacturer deserting midi dins.

Hi Russell! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for your kind words and for tuning into our channel! When buying my mp11se I tried the Nord and the mp7se side by side; both of which used the RH3. They felt different when I thought they would be the same. The mp7se bounced at the top as I released the key (finger off the key) but the Nord didn't. It was a weird feeling. Maybe a good/better pianist would keep fingers "stuck" to the key and not notice the bounce.

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Congrats on your MP11SE! It is a wonderful stage piano with one of the best actions out there. IMO, the action honestly feels exactly like a grand piano. Which is ODD at first as you kind of expect "synth" keyboards to be cheap plastic and sensors. Now if they would only add speakers so it could be a stage piano as well.

@@josephoberlander the MP11SE is already labled as a stage piano. From what I hear most stage pianos don't have or need speakers because they're mostly plugged in to amps or PAs on stage + they're prity heavy enough without speakers🎹🎶
@josephoberlander
@josephoberlander Жыл бұрын
@@MERCEDES-BENZS600GUARD_V12 It used to be about 50/50, since the original stage pianos made their own sound or had speakers. Adding speakers does give it a great amount of flexibility for gigs, provided that it isn't a zillion pounds of mass to lug around (almost 100 lbs with the typical hard case with wheels for this beast). That's why when I asked the local shop what people were actually renting and using, they said the Korg SV series. Smaller, sounds good, dead simple to use and adjust, and has speakers for those smaller gigs. I sincerely hope that the MP11 3rd edition (or whatever they call it ) adds some features like that as well as a much lighter weight.
@MERCEDES-BENZS600GUARD_V12
@MERCEDES-BENZS600GUARD_V12 Жыл бұрын
@@josephoberlander they could probably do that on the MP7SE. I think it would be harder to put speakers on the MP11SE without giving up the GFIII, and at the same time trying to make it lighter. I really do think digital pianos should be more PWD friendly because hiding everything in a touch screan isn't really helpful for blind users🎹🎶

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! The NV5S and NV10S features the Millennium III action (upright hybrid and grand hybrid version respectively). As for the difference between the GFC and GFIII, it is primarily the key stick length and, correspondingly, the pivot length. The GFIII has a longer key and pivot length, which provides greater leverage and sensitivity. :)

I wonder if the new Concert Artist CA80 and CA100 models will feature a new improved (GF4?) action in January? I notice that the level of Kawai actions are paired with the quality of the voices of their pianos, and the associated price points. At least I believe this is the case. Acoustic grands bottom out to a stack of paper and cardboard washers that regulate height (key dip). The removable action rests on a very heavily constructed wood frame at the bottom of the case. In many digital slab pianos you are looking for an instrument that not only plays well, but is easy to transport. It's a different breed of cat. Obviously the electronic sensor system on a digtial piano is hyper-critical. You are not dealing with a simple on off switch, but a sensor that has to accurately measure velocity. I've often thought the best way to do this would be with laser beams the measure the travel time between two lines. I don't know how the sensor systems actually work on a digital action, but I've only heard of one piano that uses laser light. The patented non-contact FLK light sensor technology, developed especially for our LACHNIT FLK keyboards is a real improvement for dynamic keyboards and unique on the market. The FLK light sensors measure the speed of the key driven “hammer” not just the speed of the key itself. So timing of key movement to hammer head strike (sound on set) is improved which is more playable and allows more sensible variations. (Similar to the characteristics of a Concert Grand Piano). There are no rubber contacts under the keys or on the "Hammers" , so you don’t have to press strange materials with your sensitive fingers. The last third of the key travel can be controlled more precisely as light sensors work much more accurate. All keys respond in the same uniform precise way. You can control the full dynamic range accurately in a very easy way. So you can play very fast or very slow and smooth pieces virtuously and easily. That is why performing your music on LACHNIT FLK keyboards is so enjoyable.

That is definitely true with most of Kawai's digital line. The actions and tone engines tend to scale up together with each higher model. And I definitely agree that, for players that are gigging/performing with their digital piano, transportability is a huge consideration. Thanks so much for tuning in and sharing your insights!

According to Kawai, the ES120 action still uses 2 sensors, RHC (Improved cushioning), not 3 sensors. What a nice overview. I'd say if Kawai develop an evolutionary upgrade for the "Grand Feel" action, then it's also time for a VPC-2 maybe and using that same action in there. Between today's MP11SE and VPC-1 is 4.5kg (~10lbs) weight difference and 4.7 liter (~1.2 US liq gallon) volume difference. Electronics, speakers, all the controls, and an integrated power supply warrant these differences. The difference in size and weight between the actions must be marginal. And, when you hook up that VPC-1 to your computer via USB, then that link powers the keyboard, so there's no need for the external power supply.

Thank you! We're glad that you enjoyed it! There have certainly been some calls for an update to the VPC1 that features the Grand Feel III action, but no announcements have been made by Kawai as of yet. We will certainly keep you in the loop if any announcements are made. :)

Actually there is no speakers integrated speakers in the mp11 se and there is an internal power supply in the VPC1 ( you can choose to power it via usb or via standard AC) so the difference in weight only comes from electronics control and slightly longer keys on the mp11 . I own both and actually prefer the VPC1 when it comes to the action as you can really adjust it to your liking with the various velocity curves and the velocity editor . This is the most robust and authentic keyboard I ever had and the look is absolutely amazing. You really sit in front of a grand . Nothing compares on the market . But it’s not designed for stage as you need to use a VST which is risky for live gigs .

I'd personally be happy with the compact wooden action like we see in the CA series and a $500 or so drop in price. The reason, IMO, why people love these is that they are actual piano actions in *anything* set up for stage and studio work. A more compact version of the same - that is, NOT plastic, would be just as well received. The VPC1 and MP series are indeed very very heavy and old technology by now.

@@josephoberlander - appreciated. If it feels like the Renner action in a Hamburg D, then it won't ruin the touch. I guess if you frequently play different types of keyboards that's less important. And, yes, each D is different than another but the margins are small.

I’m looking for whatever digital/hybrid piano will feel and sound like a (good-quality) acoustic grand. I was gunning for the AvantGrand from Yamaha, but they don’t seem to have come out with anything newer (better?) for several years already. The earlier Kauai hybrids didn’t cut it - either the sound wasn’t right or there seemed to be a disconnect between the mechanical keyboard action and the sound produced. Hi Stu & Crew. "Acting Hands" i see :-) Interesting direction, fighting for every 10 seconds of attention span kids with ADHD (which nowadays is all of them...) I see it more of a case with proper framing, because you naturally have a nice and subtle way of gesticulating (when you feel like it). Forcing your hands with arm rests directly into the field of view may be useful for FAQ episodes (i think that those are directed to the younger audience). ... By the way, the most dull part, when you showing how to turn on a Bluetooth (which is often the same key on many keyboards), you could change into mad/crazy mini episode of a GREAT REVEAL with Liberace apperance, fanfars, fireworks and so on. Simple information presented as an absurdly artistical lavishness ;-) ... This particular one feels like is directed to slightly more experienced players, more sensitive, mature. I would see here (in this episode) a table with props you could show, a surface you could "draw on" with your hands an imaginary keys and concepts. Other option is to have a Kawai keyboard (one you want to be remembered by viewers, one to sell ;-) as a reference point, and on it show differences (bigger than that, heavier than that and so one). Every episode is a chance to show an instrument you want to be desired, you don't have to play on it, just play with it, it will be more natural. Just want to point out that most "metrics" show correlation, not causation. Blind following of algorithms may increase quantity of views, bout may decrease a quality (which is hardly measurable). Here is a "success" story that shows it clearly kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbCRZdeZp7Ccdqs.html Anyway, you have proved that you can change your appearance, your clothes and surroundings, your approach, there is a lot to choose from. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m8mim8h1lsu9iYk.html

This video is about Kawai actions and there are so many variations it's hard to keep track. I can't really try them at the store with a salesperson hovering over me jabbering about features and changing the tones while I'm playing. I have heard many people say the Yamaha GHS action is poor or maybe not optimal. However that's what I'm playing and find it generally satisfactory. I'm going to guess that it's pretty durable as I think it is also rather simplistic. The other factor is the psycho-acoustic effect of the quality of the tone on a person's impression of the action. I still claim the instrument I'm playing sounds about as good any digital piano on the market. The voice is a combination of the the internal Yamaha voices combined with voices provided by Modartt's Pianoteq Pro. The only reason this works so well is because there is no latency between the Yamaha and may laptop were the Pianoteq voices reside. Stu has yet to check any instrument he reviews for latency. Which end of the key stick are the washers? At the front under the downward motion of the key? Top quality felt may be the best dampener under a key. Keep in mind that a traditional acoustic grand action flips the the hammer at the string, and there is no direct connection between the key, hammer, and string. It's like the distance between a batter hitting a baseball with a bat and fielder finally catching the ball in his glove. There is no direct connection between the bat and the fielder. The batter can feel the force of the bat against the ball, but not the finally result of the ball arriving in the glove. This is kind of an odd comparison to a piano action, but in reality that's how it works. The hammer is tossed at the string through the motion of the key. When we discuss digital actions we tend to think just of the mechanical aspects not the sensitivity of the electronic measurement of the key's action which is passed on to a synthesized tone, which in the case of a piano is very complex with many interactive partials.

How would you compare something like the Grand Feel of the MP11SE to Roland's PHA50? My understanding is the Grand Feel is better but how much better? So if Grand Feel is a 10, as in about as perfect as you can possibly achieve, is PHA50 a 8-9 or more like a 5? Along that concept, a new video idea for you. What would be recommended for an adult beginner where money was no object? All of the beginner piano videos I ever see use the worst/cheapest actions where it seems a lot is lost and going from one of those to a real grand piano would feel very different and take some getting used to. If I wanted to bypass all of that by starting on the most realistic keybed in a stage piano, what would I be looking at? Since I'm a beginner, I can't just go into a music store and play each to find what feels best since I have no reference and couldn't play something on each to really test the dynamic range that is possible on each. The reason I'm asking is this is ultimately a decision between a MP11SE, a Fantom 8, and a Nord Grand 2. Even though the MP11SE may be the best from a purist perspective, it just seems old and due for an update. I like all of the powerful fancy features the Fantom 8 has that I can grow into. And I love the Nord sounds (White Grand and the new Soft Grand).

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thank you for writing in with your question! Naturally, this is a very subjective matter that comes down heavily to personal preference and taste. Also, it is important to note that the action that players favour does not always come down to price. We have many players that favour the PHA4 action over the PHA50 action for instance. It is a matter of taste. In my opinion, the GFIII action and SK-EX samples on the MP11SE are the most authentic and rewarding that you can find in a portable format. If you are looking for a touch that resembles that of an acoustic grand piano in even the most nuanced ways, it is a tough action to compete with. As for what I would recommend to an adult beginner if money was no object, it would also come down to the other features they require. Some players don't want to deal with external amps/speakers, so that might be a factor in their decision and be a reason the MP11SE is eliminated from the conversation. Thanks so much! I hope these insights are helpful. :)

In any case, I would say that the VPC1 is hands down the best playing and feeling MIDI controller available. There is a slightly different touch to the GFIII. I would say that the VPC1 plays heavier than models with the GFIII action, but not necessarily substantially so. It is a wonderful instrument in my opinion! :)

Hi Ben! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for reaching out! There has been an industry-wide price increase over the last 18-24 months to combat inflation and the rising cost of shipping containers, so it is not unique to the VPC1. With that said, it is still one of the finest and most responsive MIDI controllers ever made. As for the action, while I know the RHIII action has been used in the Nord Grand models, I am not sure the RH3 action in the Korg D1 and other models are the same. Based on the weight of the instruments, I don't believe they are the same actions. I don't have much experience with the Korg D1 myself, so I cannot comment on the differences in the touch. With that said, perhaps one of our amazing community members can shed some light on the matter! :)

The Gran Feel Action II (Kawai MP 11SE) and the RM3 Grand II Hammer action (Kawai Vpc1) both have the same flaw: the black pad with the double-sided tape on the wooden key. It deforms and shifts. I have to disagree a little bit on the durability, after doing a lot of research. First off let me just say, on the one hand Kawai make some wonderful pianos and great keyboards. However recently when it comes to durability they have let the consumer down on the mp11se especially when it comes to durability. A quick google will list disgruntled customers who have had their units fail on the action of the keybed within 6 months. Its becoming common knowledge that The major design flaw in the mp11se that Kawai needs to address is whats known as a slip pad at the end of the keys. Its like a felt pad with a thin plastic top glued on that a bolt rubs on. After a short period of time these pads come unstuck and move, causing the sticky glue underneath to cause the key to stick and not function correctly. Imo a major design flaw that limits durability. I really wish they would address it as its the only thing letting this great keyboard down. The tone and playability are unmatched, however reliability is important at this price point I feel, and in these times where people are saving up their hard earned cash, they want to be playing not constantly replacing the slip pads or sending it away for repair. 👍 It may be Kawai have remedied this flaw, but if anyone can say for sure they have, it would restore my confidence.

While there have been some batches of MP11SEs and a couple of other models with some recurring issues. One thing to mention is that Kawai's post-sale/warranty support is top-notch. Any piano that has experienced the issues you discussed get resolved through warranty. It seems that Kawai has remedies for these issues, which, in turn, provide excellent durability and reliability on those models beyond that point. I believe recent batches have remedied these known issues as well (at least based on the fact that we have not been seeing MP11SE models coming in on repair/warranty claim).

Continuous Development is great but Kwai actually makes it more confusing for the customer. They rely on too much meaningless Jargon (at least from the view of the consumer that can't differentiate the features). I'm not saying that they don't make a wide range of quality products, but I am saying that they do the consumers no favor (by design I'm sure) when they overload us with their Trademarked Feature names that don't convey actual meanings or benefits.

I don't agree with that statement personally. Technological innovations such as the Aures transducer-driven soundboard system or the use of carbon-fibre in piano actions were not just devised to be fluffy marketing pieces. These innovations significantly enhance the music performance and experience of these instruments. Furthermore, I think it is worth mentioning that Kawai is one of the most transparent companies in the industry when it comes to disclosing their pianos' specifications and materials. There are many top brands that don't even share what kind of wood their soundboards are made of, which seems quite crazy to me given the price points of these products and the fact that the soundboard is essentially the heart of the instrument.

@@MerriamPianos Kawai has done an excellent job with their Naming conventions on their Acoustic pianos, but not for their Digital Lineup. I agree with what you said but that said, they really have done a poor job when creating the naming structure for their both their Digital Piano Lineup (where is the simplicity found in their acoustic line?), and with the myriad of piano actions they offer in their Digital line. Yes, the technology advancements are made at a much quicker pace in that space, but objectively speaking, their marketing on the digital side leaves much to be desired.

The only obvious and meaningful action that they have from a Consumer point of view is the Millenium III Actions on the Hybrids. That, is easy to understand. Roland has done a much better job of upgrading and Limiting (PH-4, PH-50, and two varieties of PH-100) the proliferation of confusing different actions.
