I buy two motorcycles for a song and try to get them running. Disaster strikes as the engine is seized, we break an extractor in the cylinder, and other odds and ends need replacing. This is the perfect time to show you guys what can go wrong in a restoration build and what to do and what not to do.
The purpose of this build is to get the bike running with minimal effort and expense, then proceed to make modifications to the bike to see how far we can change the stock look.

How had the rebuild gone? I’m new to riding and saw one online I was interested in getting but it needs some maintenance done such as the airbox replacement and a few other things.

Edward Scroggins I'm doing the same but I'm a complete noob. how did it go ? I bought mine as a cafe to be honest but I've been doing slight modifications. cleaning the carbs now but my more knowledgeable buddy was dumbfounded by the design ..?

A couple things, make sure to use a wrench on the crankshaft before attempting to hit the starter. The last thing you want is to damage a hard to come by starter on an engine that's possibly seized. When it comes to gaskets, just make your own, Permatex makes a great instant gasket that seems to work pretty well. There's also paper gaskets that can be cut to fit. Also, get a decent wrench set. Sockets aren't that expensive and the modern ones are much less likely to round off bolts than a crescent wrench.

What's up 3 knees down I have a 81 Kawasaki kz 440 ltd and I need some advice when I bought my 440 it had regular set of points & condenser it never really ran that good so I did some research & I found out a lot of these bikes came with pulsing pickup coil so I ordered a cdi box & a pickup coil I don't know if I need any other parts to make it work again

bummed that the KZ got moved back, but I totally get it. I just repainted mine, stripped the blinkers, cut about 6 inches off of the back of the front fender and added clubman bars. I think I will cut the megaphones off just behind the hangers and see if I can give it a little better sound.

Warning! Opening up the exhaust could mean you will have to rejet the carbs.

I just purchased a 1982 KZ440 D and I'm having issues with it charging the battery. I've replaced the Voltage Rectifier/regulator and the battery. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Definitely the stater I was in the middle of rewiring when the wires going to the stater broke inside the rubber. I took of the cover to find that the stater wires are bad all the way into the stater now the trouble I’m having is finding another

Did you put a new head gasket on? If so how did you get the old one off. Rebuilding mine and the gaskets are so stuck on I can’t get them off with out damaging the surfaces.

I used some gasket remover spray and a flat head xacto to carefully remove it.

An adjustable wrench are you guys for real what's the matter you don't got a socket set? You have to put a socket on the extractor with a big ratchet and apply pressure as you turn it and if you're not having any luck cuz those things are brittle you have to heat it up with a torch I mean where the spark plug broke inside. Sorry don't mean to be a know-it-all I just do this kind of thing for a living. Good luck guys it looks like a cool project.

I know I haven't posted a video in quite some time but the KZ440 was the only abandoned project (too much rusted through, not enough money). The R3 and CR250 Sumo are still in progress.

@@robertoramirez4675 at the time I didnt have enough money between racing and building to fun this. My bike needed new pistons, rings, and possibly carbs. With that, I think it would've been fine but only the new owner knows now....

Im pretty sure you were turning the ez-out the wrong way. its reverse threaded so you loosen on it to get it to bite down cause the threads are left handed. The reason the one cylinder is black and rusty is because the bike probably blew a head-gasket and the rust seized it. You should always crank a motor over by hand before trying to put a starter on it.

+Tiago Santos Still working on it. I posted a general update mentioning it's a parked project until the other bikes get finished before race season starts. I still have 1-2 episodes to push for the KZ then I'll get back to it full time!

No. I switched projects to the CR250. The KZ440 had way too many repairs it needed and having just moved to Arizona kind of killed it...

+3 Knees Down hey I just moved to Arizona and bought a 440 kinda spur of the moment because it is my dream and really learned a lot on that first video and hoping there would be follow ups.. I am teaching myself everything about her and was hoping you'd be able to reach out and give me advice?

Yea unfortunately I sold the bike to help fund other projects. My main advice is to really make sure you get the carbs tuned and synced well. It makes or breaks the ability to run the bike well.

Thanks, djmonassi1. I did get it running but cost + time didn't make it worth the effort at the time. I will be revisiting the kz440 in the future since it's a really interesting bike!

Without seeing a picture it's hard to say. If it tries to turn over and/or has spark you should be good. The rest is engine and ignition timing issues usually.

I have a kz 440 Ltd 81. Model. Everything works on this bike. But it has a high idle issue and I don't want to spend anymore money on it. Will let it go for 200.00

I had the same bike. Bought new in 1981 and drove it for 70,000 miles. Mine had rot rubber diaphragms. Cost $200 because they sell the rubber and metal throttle together. Don’t know what is available now. I sold it in 1995. The gas now has alcohol in it which rots the rubber. This causes the engine to run bad. To check the diaphragms take of the chrome carb covers (4 screws) and look to see if there are tears in the rubber.
