I have owned a W650 from new, she will be 16 years old this autumn. Coming up to 54,000 trouble-free kilometres on the clock, it has been a great time. Fell in love with the model in 1999, looked just like the BSA Lightning I coveted as a teenager. In 2002 we became an item and it looks like we're in for the long haul. Excellent engineering from the guys in Akashi, Hyogo, Japan.

I have a 01 triumph legend that's been nothing but trouble for me (fix one thing another breaks), and finding the right parts and being able to work on the triumph is really quite a pain. I found a W650 for sale am thinking of buying it and selling the triumph would you recommend that with your experience with your bike?

That W3 650 at 2:06 sounds exactly how a good running vertical twin should sound! So much better than the BSA's and Triumph's of that era. No oil leaks, they almost always ran good, and they rode nice. Lots of bottom end grunt and plenty of power for two-up riding.😁👍

Back in the early 70s, a friend had a W650. I had a new Yamaha 650 twin. We headed out from Ohio to go to California. My friend had to keep stopping to adjust his chain. Eventually we discovered that the bike vibrated so much that the engine mounting bolts had come loose and fallen out. We found replacements and continued. Then the Kaw's right-hand header pipe fell off; the flange had broken from vibration. We got that fixed. Later, my friend noticed that his left pantleg was soaked with oil. Another stop. Finally my friend just left his bike in a ditch in Colorado and took a bus back to Ohio. What memories!

Do you think it might have been one of the earlier "W" types? The W650 was only introduced in 1999. BTW, I am the happy owner of a W800: 65,000 km, no drama.

You are talking about a different bike altogether. The W650 and W800 are much later bikes with different engines. You are talking about W1. That was a licensed copy of the old A7 and A10 by BSA. I had one of those. It didn't break down but it di vibrate a fair bit.

@@wordsmithgmxch He must be talking about a W1 rather than W650. That would make sense given he was riding along side an XS650 Yamaha. The W650 and W800s are solid dependable bikes. I just bought a 2019 W800 Street. I would however love to get my hands on a XS650. They were great bikes.

BSA Royal Star was my first bike, stunningly beautiful even next to a Kwai 900 at a stop light. The sound and thump of that leaky Limey with Ahole Amol carbs and Luckless electrics still thrilled my Female friends when we went for a ride. I graduated to a Moto Guzzi 850 Lemans 'Cafe Racer' in the late 70's. That big twin rumbled with an organic feel never to be forgotten. These Japanese retro creation have captured the essence of what I experienced, motorcycle wise, in my teens. Very, very nice...I'll ride one of this 'sewing machines' any day! Good video, no music or nonsense...just the heartbeat of great machines!

It's called LICENSE BUILT, it's not like they "ripped off" BSA - Hell, if anything, you can see the BSA design was a step backwards, considering what Kawasaki made alongside of 'em! They demonstrated that they could literally beat the Brit marques at their OWN game. Such a pity that British & American marques decided to stick with their pre-WWII designs. Oddly enough, both Guzzi & Ducati stuck with older designs, but they're both introduced circa 1970 and that makes all the difference. A lot of technological development over that 30yr span since Harley had settled on their narrow angle V-twin, and the Brits had become fixated on the parallel twins. Guzzi & Ducati were off to a better start. It's not unusual for a company to drag out an engine design for several decades - witness the pre liquid-cooled GIXXER for all intents and purposes, the oil-cooled versions weren't all THAT different from their earliest four-valve GSX's - Honda with their CB & subsequent CBR liquid-cooled version, though they at least had SEVERAL other lines with fundamentally different basic engine architecture. Hard to think of a layout which Honda DIDN'T do over the span of the SOHC-4 CB through to the liquid-cooled CBR's - Still, SOME of the Japanese brands were slightly less inventive & creative than that.....

Ah! The old MEGURO is back! Had one of these back in the 60"s! Wish I'd never sold it! Quote from wikipedia :- In the 1950s, Meguro entered racing and built its first twin cylindered design, the 651 cc (39.7 cu in) 'Senior' based on a British pre-unit vertical twin design and later the K-series "Stamina" model, based on the BSA A7 A10 range, one of which Meguro had purchased in 1953. Its quality and engineering was superior to the BSA and it was described by Edward Turner, one of Britain’s most talented motorcycle designers, as "too good to be true". For the first time, the Japanese motorcycle industry was perceived as a threat. Its other models designed in collaboration with Kawasaki were entirely of Japanese design.

It's not in Great Britain, the registration plate isn't a UK one. It's more likely to be in Japan as the Japanese also drive on the left hand side of the road, that would explain why it's parked on the left.

I wonder if the new retro bikes are set up where you can turn the headlights on and off as necessary, like the originals, or they just stay on all the time, like the new bikes.

I heard that Suzuki produced retro styled 650 single bike to rival w650 but those never sold outside Japan. I haven't found even pictures of those.

Not this one? I'm not sure they're in production in 2020, but when I had my oil changed in April at a Honda/Suzuki shop, they had a new one on the floor. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_Boulevard_S40

@@spencerdawkins No,not this one. Suzuki did street bike much like w650 but with big 650 single in it. That was back in early 1990s.

In 1967 I was riding a BSA Spitfire Mk III. I remember seeing the Kawasaki 650's and thinking "Nice Try". But do they leak?
@noushitaisa
@noushitaisa 6 жыл бұрын
Leak they do NOT. Horizontal-split crankcase is one reason. I've had my W650 for 15 years/53,000 km and the only oil leaked is what I spilled through carelessness. Reliable - Way better than the old BSA/Triumphs == hth
@noushitaisa
@noushitaisa 6 жыл бұрын
To answer your question about leaks: the answer is NO -- I've had my W650 for 16 years and 53,500 km (as of today) and she has not leaked a spot of oil in all that time. Good engineering at Kawasaki!

Triumph's Bonneville is their biggest seller by far,they can't build them fast enough. The W650 was a flop in the states in '99. Not sure if it was bad timing or what but I hope they bring the W800 here !
