カワウは、全身がほぼ黒色で、大きさはガチョウほどもあります。翼の雨覆羽には褐色味があり、嘴の基部の黄色い口角部分には丸みがあります。日本では河川だけでなく、湖沼、河口付近、浅海域でも普通に見ることができます 。
カワウはアフリカ大陸、ユーラシア大陸、オーストラリア大陸、ニュージーランド、北アメリカ大陸東部沿岸、グリーンランドの一部など広い範囲に分布しています。日本では主に本州、四国、九州に繁殖地があり、留鳥（または漂鳥）として生息しています。北海道でも繁殖が確認されており、夏鳥として北海道に飛来する一方、冬鳥として九州、対馬、伊豆諸島、小笠原諸島、琉球諸島、大東諸島などでも見られます 。
Cormorants are almost entirely black in color and are about the size of a goose. The wing feathers have a brownish tinge, and the yellow corners of the mouth at the base of the beak are rounded. In Japan, they can commonly be seen not only in rivers, but also in lakes, near river mouths, and in shallow waters.
Cormorants are distributed over a wide range of areas, including Africa, Eurasia, Australia, New Zealand, the eastern coast of North America, and parts of Greenland. In Japan, their breeding grounds are mainly in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, where they live as resident (or drifting) birds. Breeding has been confirmed in Hokkaido, and while they fly to Hokkaido as a summer bird, they can also be seen in winter in Kyushu, Tsushima, the Izu Islands, the Ogasawara Islands, the Ryukyu Islands, and the Daito Islands.
