Field Trips with Robert Field

Field Trips with Robert Field

Күн бұрын

Two years ago, Bert and Dan Rodriguez attempted to kayak fish their way down 61 miles of the Lower Pecos River from Pandale Crossing to the Pecos High Bridge. Halfway through their trip, flash floods trapped them at their campsite, forcing them to abandon their gear and evacuate via helicopter.
Now, two years later, Bert and Dan have returned to the Pecos to finish what they started, and they've invited me along to document the trip.
We'll encounter wild mustangs, scorpions, debilitating heat, endless rapids, thunderstorms and plenty of largemouth bass along our route.
Come along for the adventure in part one of this four-part miniseries.

Was absolutely enjoyed seeing your version of River. My Dad grew up in Iraan area of PECOS(20,30 & early 40s). My Dad share few stories of him & buddies; go to Blacksmith shops & salvage old sheet metal & make canoes. Then float the Pecos, on couple of occasions; all way to the Rio, then hike back. Told of all caves/drawings, Potter. He described how much got cover up with Lake Amistad. Will catch part 2.

Great video Robert! Watching it brought back some great memories from our trip in 2014. It was great to see so many familiar spots in the vid, and remember the good and the tough times. Especially the walking in the wind. You were right were I was when I figured it was faster to walk than paddle. lol. Awesome job my friend!

Lots of rivers in Georgia, and you guys have shoal bass, an awesome subspecies. The Chatahoochee has em. Not sure where you can do multi-day trips there though, you'll have to do some research. I've never been to Georgia in my life.

Your videos inspire my friends and I to get out on these rivers and forget about our worries! This is what life is about! We hope to start some 2-3 day trips soon at some more local places like the Guadeloupe and the Brazos! Just bought the pelican catch 120 as it's the most expensive kayak I can afford as a college student and so far so good! I've lost sleep watching your series's!

Here in West Texas we pronounce it ‘Paycuss’. I worked in Pecos for several years. The river here doesn’t resemble the Pecos in New Mexico. It’s a narrow creek with barely a trickle of water. However, where the Pecos, Rio Grande and Devil’s come together is a beautiful area in my opinion.

Salute The Lower Pecos! I spent my younger days down in Pandale. Used to be the best handfishing spot,right below the Everitts ranch house. Any half submerged rock had big 30-50 pounders under it. Would have been nice to have had my kayak back in 70',early 80's...

Two of my friends and i went kayaking last year and ran into unexpected whitewater, wasnt bad but none of us have (..well i guess had now haha) any experience doing it, unfortunately one of my buds flipped, banged up his knee pretty hard and lost most of his fishing gear. Lesson learned: scout the river if your unsure or take a guide. Had fun though haha! subbed!!

Robert, the quality of your videos are just absolutely amazing. I watch nearly all of your videos as a subscriber and fan. I was hoping there may be a way to contact you and ask a few questions as I am going to start my own channel and would like some advise as a fellow ex Aggie. Thank you so much in advance Mr. Field! Keep it up!

The thing about Texas is that it's 97% private. Almost all, if not all, the land around the Pecos is private. This is one of the challenges (same with Devils River and others). This makes me think these horses might not be all that "wild." On the other hand if you paddle the Rio Grande through Big Bend Nat'l Park and see horses, those are wild (assuming not on private property on the Mexican side). But of course there is no way for me to know if these horses belong to a land owner or not, that's an assumption on my part. Great video, I hope to paddle the Pecos at some point in the next couple of years.

Spot on, Brian. From our understanding, those are wild mustangs that have never been domesticated, but do tend to "frequent" that guy's property. But it's unfenced from what we were told.

I am on my own with that, I do 100% of the editing right now. I've got a college student kind of "trying out" for an internship with YakFish TV to help with editing. It doesn't pay a lot but it does pay, and good resume booster, connections with companies looking to hire freelancers, etc. If you want to send me something you've done, post a link and I'll check it out. Either way, thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it bro!

Horses actually originated in the Americas, but went extinct in both North and South America between 10,000-15,000 years ago. Nobody knows why. They weren't seen on the continent again until Christopher Columbus brought them over in 1494 during his second voyage to "the new world."

Are there any Pecos River guides? After watching your first trip video I'm dying to go. BTW great video!
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
Not that I know of. Shane Davies is the only legitimate guy that might do it, but I don't think he likes guiding down the Pecos. I heard him saying it was tough for those without the proper experience. He does the Devil's though, and I think the Devil's is a perfect warm up to the Pecos. After that trip, you may not need a guide for the Pecos. Shane Davies is River Runner Guide Service.

Robert, Pecos or Devils for a beginner's first overnight-er? Great vid as always!
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
I'd definitely do the Devils first. The Pecos was more intense in just about every way: more remote, more rapids, bigger rapids, etc. The Devils is an incredible trip too, but all in all, the Pecos topped it. My overall suggestion is do both! Just do the Devils first.

Hey Robert and/or fans of kayaking. I'm getting a kayak tomorrow, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how best to transport it. Specifically im looking for something for my chevy silverado that i can rely on to hold my kayak securely for several hours of driving.

You want to put it in the bed or above the truck? Check out Boonedox - www.boonedoxusa.com - they make the T-Bone which is the best bed extender on the market (all aluminum, will never rust, more clearance if backing into a hill) or the Outfitter which gets the kayak over the cab and bed of the truck. Then just two straps and you're good to go bud.

I disagree with the statement made at 9:15. My buddy caught nearly a 10lb bass on the Pecos and he was caught in the clear spring water you show at 10:10. We call it the Chester hole. Chester weighed in over 9lbs (and was very poor looking/skinny) and we caught an 8lb bass to back him up. We hunt on the Pecos and wade down to the Chester hole from a river crossing about 800 yards up river.
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 4 жыл бұрын
Cool. But do you disagree that’s it’s not a place to go hunting 10 pounders? This is Texas, brother. I can think of about 27 bodies of water where you’d have about a million times better chance. Sick to hear they do get close in there, though. I will be back!
@Team3GR
@Team3GR 4 жыл бұрын
Robert Field I 100% agree there are many better places to fish in Texas for big bass. We were surprised ourselves when we caught the first 5 pounder, but we had only been fishing for about an hour so the hunt was in for something bigger.

Robert, planning on doing this trip next March or April. Did Devils this past May- tough trip with the end in our face the entire time. Not sure we can take 8 days. What is a reasonable trip length to consider for this stretch of the Pecos? Also does everyone get a yak tug from boat at the end? How far usually? thanks
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 5 жыл бұрын
Wind will be in your face. I think 5 or 6 days would be doable. Really just depends on how much you want to fish. Theoretically you could probably do it in 48 hours if you never stopped and didn’t sleep much. Getting dragged out isn’t “typical,” there isn’t much that’s “typical” about this trip. That last stretch is just kinda boring as it flattens and widens and turns into Amistad, so we decided to skip it.
