It’s an amazing area, I really enjoyed my trip kayaking to Shakleford last year. The crazy thing is after weeks of planning, plotting the route, analyzing tide charts, etc., you’re still at the mercy of the ever changing landscape! I love it though!

Ok, you make alot of great videos and are a good teacher. One topic I’ve been searching for is sea kayak hull design. I saw that you have a soft vs hard chines video I’ve watched twice maybe to can speak about English vs Greenland vs American etc design boats, how they handle and the features and benefits of each? I think that would be super interesting. I haven’t been able to find this information on KZfaq yet. If you know of a place please let me know. Thank you. Keep up the good work.

Would you recommend wearing higher visibility clothing, maybe also using a flag like the Yak Attack Visipro Carbon? Trying to gather pointers for my first trip out to Cape Lookout. I grew up there and spent a lot of time in power boats but never paddled out there. Also wondering if it might make sense to do it in a day trip the first time.

I think higher vis clothing is never a bad idea where there is boat traffic and there can definitely be boat traffic at cape lookout. You have to cross the main channel at come point to get to the light house. Also a lot of the beach has eroded at the bite. I usually camp on the ocean side. You shouldn’t need a flag unless the weather is really bad. I paddled there once in like 6 foot swell and realized as we were doing the crossing boats wouldnt see us until they were literally on top of us.

Other small boats don’t slow down because of kayaks?

Not very often. Especially in busy channels. It can be daunting to cross. While we do have responsible boaters over here, but a lot of them will consider paddlers a target. I've had boaters swerve across a km of channel to pass within 3 meters of me. Collisions are common. Here in Florida the boaters even shoot each other. People ask me how I can paddle with alligators. I tell them I'm not worried about alligators, I worry about drunk old men piloting pontoon and bass boats.

They should… but there is a concept called “the rule of tonnage.” You can’t guarantee that they see you, and so its better just to stop….
