Kayaking Florida's Juniper Spring Run, One Fuuuuuun Ride!

Just east of Silver Springs is another popular kayaking run called the Juniper Springs Run. It is seven miles and the shuttle is provided by the park so it's pretty easy to arrange. This run though is a little tougher than all the others that I have done since once you leave the first dock there is nowhere to get out until you hit the take out point. There are no roads and no trails of any sort so it's either you keep kayaking or hitch a ride on a canoe coming down or something.
They do say that this is not for beginners and that is correct. You need to have very good control over your boat throughout and there's even a fun little bit of rapids to get you all wet. It's a fun ride and if you're up for it you should totally take on the challenge!
I guess it was especially funny for me since I did it in a folding kayak which was meant for just calm lakes and I got soaked!

Thanks for taking us along on your kayaking trip! Awesome scenery and a jungle-like athmosphere and vegetation. I felt pretty concerned about the alligators. I'd be in my pants if my kayak was floating that close to an alligator 😬 but okay - I'm a wimp from Germany.🤗

If anybody goes to Florida they definitely have to try kayaking! The water has been so pleasant.

That looked really fun. I always wear my life vest when kayaking. You can drown in just 6" of water. I also bring a small dry bag and either a big sponge or the bottom half of a water bottle to get any water out. Happy Paddling and Happy Trails! 🏝🐊

I've done Juniper Run numerous times in a canoe. It has been a while though (maybe 20+ years), but I don't remember the brief rapids. The Run is one of my favorite things to do in Florida, glad you got to do it. I'm guessing the alligator population has increased a bit since I lived there as they were on the endangered list at the beginning of the 80's. I remember occassionally seeing them on the sunny section near the end. I never thought of the Run as advanced. It is a great way to learn how to paddle has the turn are sharp and plentiful. In a canoe, always best to steer as the first in front alway got ran into bushes or spider webs.

Interesting at the end you had water go into the little channels, I have never used one of those. Lots of Sweepers, careful you don’t grab those in current or you will roll over. Pretty tight quarters with so many sweepers. I agree, beginners should not do this without a few trips behind them. Yeah, slow water on right and fast on left and you are in an Eddy. Lean to the right with flat surface of the paddle almost flat on top of the water and reaching out forward and sweep slow and wide to the right and behind you. You could also do a figure 8 stroke with the paddle while leaning out onto the paddle if you keep your figure 8 going. That is called a Brace. You did real good and that was a fun video. I enjoyed the close quarters of foliage and beauty. Fun trip. 👍🏼

I think you make a good call on the lifejacket. Safety first, even if no one else is doing it. But I think you need a better Kayak. The control on that one sucks.

I wonder...if you knew ahead of time you were going to face that kind of white water could you tape some plastic sheeting across the open bow of the boat for sort of a temporary apron or decking to keep a bunch of that water out? Neat place. Thanks for sharing!

They even sell a big skirt like thing you can attach to help block the water but really this kayak just wasn't meant for this. The cover could really help prevent sunburn on the legs though. Honestly I thought it was going to be slower and shorter from the other KZfaq videos I saw.
