@@mjm3091 I don't know where you are from, but I think it is not only an issue in Korea, sexual crimes have always been in high rate around the world. I know there are many unsolved cases of sexual assault in Korea. :/ So it's very common to be told to be careful where you go and with who, specially if you're a female.

@@LEXI200121 I mean I know that it is an issue around the world (it is an issue in my country, but in different circumstanses I suppose). But I'm suprised that it is an issue in Korea to the point of still having more of traditional (?) aproach to the issue. I'm from Poland and mentality of men and women is different. The only places that are unsafe to the point of having a need for another female/male around is when you go to more dangerous parts of the city and/or the clubs so someone can keep you safe when you are drinking. But that applies to both sexes. I never heard of having a need for another female in the house, cause like not only for most Polish men predatory behaviour would be way against their honour, but also women here are really independent and can easily take care of themselves. Like most of them would easily beat you up in one way or another. But then again it is also way more common here, I think - to invite people to your house, and it would be way against hospitality rules to sexually harass your guest.

@@mjm3091 I see... Thank you for your answer! Is very interesting that is a matter of honour. I'm from Colombia, and here parents or the adult in charge ask underage kids to visit their friends if the mother or another female adult (aunt, grandma, big sister) is present. Is because in a traditional way of thinking women are less likely to commit sexual crimes or allow them to take place (sadly, this has been proven to not be true in many cases). From the news I've seen about Korea and in my own country predators usually invite victims to a familiar environment (probably their house, or they go to the victims house). I think in both Asia and South America we are mainly raise in a way that teach us to not trust others easily and to be careful with the people we already know (since they are parts in the world where several crimes are always at high rate). For both sexes we are taught that anyone could be a potential treat to our integrity even our own family. Must of us are raise to be very wary of others. It would be amazing if here and in Asia people took their own and others honour seriously. :)

Sorry to offend you, but that's how I find it - being endangered in your own country, city, neighbourhood, home feels hella "medieval"/not modern. It's genuinely unthinkable for me that in 2019 in supposedly "first world" countries stuff like that happens. Then again I checked some data, and the statistics of victims of rape in some countries like Germany, UK or Sweden really shocked me.

I’ve seen a few foreigners who teach English there mention how bad Korean sex education is. Also, given Korea’s high abortion, teen pregnancies and shot gun wedding rates, I really do understand where the Mum is coming from and why she’s so militant about educating him HOWEVER, she’s going about it the wrong way and is using fear tactics and embarrassment rather than informed and respectful education.

@KamilaDalmate I really like your mindset. I was lucky enough to have parents who were open and honest with me. I'm thankful to them they took the time to educate me on something so important. We had sex ed in school, but there was so much missing. Like developing healthy sexual and non-sexual relationships, the importance of consent, affection and emotion, the physical functions of our parts (and many variations!), risks and consequences, communication, etc. They started introducing me to such things around age 11-12 and by the time I was 15-16 I had a huge headstart on my contemporaries, who only knew what was taught in health class, what they saw in porn and sexual experiences retold by our peers. I feel very fortunate to have been given a well-rounded and realistic education. The internet has a lot of information, but it's like going to the library and not knowing what books you should be reading if you don't have a framework to put the information in.

This particular mum might be too excessive. But what I think is more important is that we should stop making sex this huge taboo and embarassing thing. Having a more open conversation about sex, contraception, masturbation, orientation and stuff like that will reduce unsafe sex practices, accidental pregnancies and any mental stress that is associated with sex. I mean, the only reason these kid were so embarrassed was that as a society we have deemed sex to be something taboo and that shouldn't be openly talked about.

I think that what she's trying to say it's that sex is often taken as a taboo when it comes to talk about it with our parents. It's not the case for me, but a lot of my friends can't talk about it with their parents because they will find it gross or something that is only for adults. It's important to talk about this with teenagers or even kids because this topic is everywhere and sometimes it comes with SO bad in formation that it could lead someone who doesn't know about it to a pregnancy, std, an abortion or even hurt their partner during the action. For example, a lot of boys learn about sex from prom videos but there the sex is sold as something where the girl is used, where the condoms are not important or that sex is something where only the boy leads and the girl follows. There's so much to learn and I think it's important to get to know these topics and take them with no shame or as a taboo
