I don't think that the child is dependent on money. The child is very smart, and it is clear that he understands everything. He doesn't worry about money, he worries about his mother. I agree with his mother. I don't see happiness in his eyes. At the end, I thought that he was going to cry. Also, I didn't like that counselors were laughing the child's dream.

What? I see the opposite. I see he's happy when he does what he loves, collects junk and earning money. I don't think It's that deep for him to worry about the family's economical situation. The only reason he seemed sad by the end is because everyone was disappointed at him for doing what he likes. This is very sad, because of the adults. They should leave him alone.

Yep, and i can understand him. At home was the same, when you are conscient of how things work at such a young age, anf that you are not part of the blessed ones, running around and playing seems stupid and a waste of time. When i was young i wanted but in the end i just felt like stupid because in the end i knew the world didnt work like that and things would get rought while time pass. Even now beung older it cost me to uust spend time playing even if is witg my money and i can aford it. U-U

He's clearly very aware of everything. He's a smart kid but he's worrying too much, too young. He needs to learn that it's ok to forget about serious matters sometimes and to just have fun and be a child.

Honestly I think his family had a huge part in influencing the way he became, the lack of spending time with his parents may have been a contributing factor in the way his mind works about money. I think he was exposed too early bc if his happiest moment really was finding 11 cents on the ground, that just shows you how he sees money. I think he’s such a smart and really cool son for saving up 3000 dollars with his grandmother. However I don’t want him to end up only thinking that money is the most important, because it’s not.

NO I THINK HE JUST LIKES IT! HONESTLY! THIS IS STUPID. I SAW ONE COMMENT HERE ABOUT HIM ''LOOKING SAD''... WELL YOU DON'T THINK HE WOULD BE SAD? LOOK AT ALL THOSE ADULTS BEING DISAPPOINTED AT HIM FOR DOING WHAT HE LIKES, LIKE HE'S DOING SOMETHING WRONG, ESPECIALLY HIS MOM. AND THAT MAKES HIM SAD. LEAVE HIM ALONE AND LET HIM DO WHAT HE LOVES! HE'S SMART AND WILL BECOME VERY SUCCESSFUL ONE DAY AS LONG AS HIS MIND IS HEALTHY.

He chose the "junk" over a friend who'd play with him once because the junk or any junk is dependable. It will earn him money whereas that kind of friend is fickle. The kid is insecure which is why he's doing this. He probably thinks that if he doesn't work hard, he'll be like his father. It's commendable he knows the value of money working with this grandmother, and even saved so much money at his age, but this at the expense of his childhood. The mother should go out of her way to spend time with him rather than just telling him to stop. She shouldn't be embarrassed for what her kid is doing. There's nothing wrong with it. She can either go do this with him or take him out someplace so he can be a kid.

This is a concern! A massive one. This boy is constantly living in an existential crisis, that is a lot of stress and pressure and a human let alone a child! Anyone who sees it as commendable doesn't know what it is like to be a child and to think that you somehow have to support your family , to set aside your little dreams and console yourself with the word later because you think that your family is that poor... when a child starts to behave like an "adult", it is a clear indicator that it does not feel safe nor protected

At first, I thought this isn’t concern but after his mom mention that she doesn’t have a lot of memories with her son, this is concern because I know her son is smart and helpful in the family and very impress about him. I was surprised he is maturing at his currently age than when I was nine and a bit matured. He should deserve a break and enjoy his childhood (treasure, cherish, and valuable) before he will grow into teen year.

In my very own opinion, his father is abroad since he was 3. I think that in someway, he thinks that if they had more money, his father would have been by his side and not working overseas. Or he's thinking that it's better to save money in advance and have more money so that he doesn't have to leave his "family to be" in the future., for him not be like his father., for his children not to experience the same thing he did. And just like what was already stated, he witnessed his grandfather scolding his father for not having money..

Even though everyone is the comment section saying that he is smart and mature, of course he is. At his age it is very important to have a social life. At every age section there is a need for the child to develop so later in his life all those experiences, even though young, is beneficial. It is important for Taemin to first develop social skills and then work on his financial life.

While it’s commendable that he knows the value of money, he’s too young to be worried about his family’s financial problems. He looks so unhappy and he’s too young for that. Parents shouldn’t put their family issues on the child. Nothing positive can come from that. Instead, his mother should be spending time with him and finding healthy ways to nurture his investment ways. Or, she can just take time out for the two of them and he can just go out and be a kid.

i almost cried, i feel so sad for this kid and relate hard. I grew up in poverty so i was super aware of the money situation at home, we lived off welfare at certain points. We sometimes didn't have enough money for food. Anyways I was similar to the kid and I would be obsessed with money. Obsessed with saving everything i could and not spending. But as i grew up i changed a bit. I do regret not being a bit more selfish and free as a kid. I suffered depression bc of it ofcrse. Anyways i'm better now but not after a lot of self reflection and trying to find myself. Hope his mom keeps the promise and he is happier.

Honestly, after watching a couple of Hello, Counselor, I can see that everyone is sensationalizing people’s problems. Sometimes it’s alright to see that with adults but with children this is traumatic. They should at least bring one professional to assess the situation and give advice because children will have to grow up and learn from these problems. These adults ridiculing the situation and taking it lightly are absolutely the problem. So sad to see this.

I'm surprised reading the comments saying they don't understand the mother's concern. She should be to begin with, because her son is still a 9 years old kid, but the obsession started for 5 years old. He was still a toddler! That means Taemin can't experience anything that make him happy other than saving money. This can turn him into a toxic person when he grew up. At his age he should've been making memories with his mom, grandma and friends instead. So he can develop sense of sympathy and compassion for other people. I grew with a father who only care for money, and let me tell you, living with him is like hell. He lack of sympathy and always do anything for saving money. Even for medical reason, he won't spend his money for that shit. I wish Taemin can learn that money is not everything. I don't want his pure soul will turn into heartless human being 💔

Lol I did this when I was 9-11 too. Legit didn't know that it was in issue... But in retrospect I used to roam the streets of our residential neighborhood in really bad mangy clothes, with a magnet hanging from a stick by a thread (to attract iron), and a sad af plastic bag. I legit was dedicated to collecting metal, I scavenged everywhere even old junk yards. My dad was a "respectable" figure in the neighborhood. It was a small town so everyone knew everyone so I don't really know what people thought about my parents. X'D In retrospect, again, I'm happy that I was so oblivious. Having collected trash metal as a kid I feel like I can do anything as an adult xD

They should just have a day or two a week where he takes a rest and goes play with friends or spend time with his mum. He's got a smart head on his shoulders, and it's good to start saving early. Of course, his childhood is different to other children but I think as long as he has some time where he can play, and not work all the time it's good. I also collect things off the street but not really to make money but because sometimes pple throw out really good stuff that can be used. The stuff I like I keep and the rest goes to charity. Sometimes people throw out cans and bottles and I take those to redeem for money. 10c a pop.

He should go out and play with his friends at least once in a while. I'm afraid when he grow up, he might be too obsessed collecting and saving money until he neglected his own need and people around him especially his family. I mean, happiness is not about money all the time ..

It's indeed admirable that he is well-aware of the importance of money and does his best to save up but he has gone overboard when he neglected his own needs or welfare over saving up money. Like for example, when he turns off the aircon or electric fan after five minutes in order to prevent their electric bills from going up even when it's hot. And when he refused to buy new slippers right when it's already too small for him, even having his toes curled up. These might be just minor as of now but if he continues being like this, he might neglect his own welfare even more as he grows up just to save up money. Him earning money isn't a problem for me, I find it quite brilliant of him, but if saving up money causes him to overlook his own health and such, then he needs to learn how to save money in a better way.

I don't think it is a concern. He is very smart and will succeed business wise one day. I think that the reason he looks sad is because everyone keeps telling him that what he loves doing is wrong and basically made fun of his dreams and goals. I'd be sad too if people kept telling me what I'm doing is not normal smh. What I do agree on is that he shouldn't save money at the expense of his health. For instance when his slippers became too small for him he shouldn't bear with that kind of pain just to save a bit more money. Also I do agree that his mother should spend more time with him. Other than that, he will be able to make friends some day; friends who share the same interest as him. He seemed actually happy when he heard that one of his friend's goal was to also buy a house with her savings.

It's great to see how his mindset. I believe he will be rich in future. But if he too obsessed with money, he will be stingy to share his money woth others. My father always stingy in money since he come from poor fmily. So any family member should show him how kindness and time can bring happiness, not money

I feel like this is really the first time where the topic doesnt belong in the pulic but to a good mental doctor. the problem is not him liking money but more that he doesnt really seems happy.. and it wont help to discuss that in public. i even feel like they harm him in this way.. why cant the mother speak with him at home? isnt she able to talk to her child? And when shes not, she should search for real help. This is a show for entertainment. not for help.. When they discuss something between adults they know what they do. but talking to her own child on tv instead of seeking good help... i just cant believe that this is the first thing that came into the mothers mind.. especially when she said that she worries about what the neighbors would think... now the whole country know.. and even people like me from other countries..

Honestly sounds just like my younger brother. He also had an unusual interest in money despite his young age and he thought outside of the norm in earning money. Just like this kid, I remember he saw a jar of coins when we visited a family friend’s home, and he stuffed the coins in his pockets. They were so fat it was obvious what he’d done. :) and when my mom asked what he had in his pockets, like a little imp he clutched his pockets filled with the stolen change and exclaimed, “It’s mine!” That was when he was four years old. And I remember one time at Christmas, he was about six, my mom asked us what he wanted from Santa. I said I wanted that life size doll. His response was. “money!” My mom kept asking him what he really wanted though. And he said he wants money because if he had money then he can buy whatever he wants. (Which is true but most of us at a young age don’t have such a complex thoughts regarding money). At his school in the second grade, he and his friends show each other their allowance money. My brother has $2 in two dollar bills. The other boy has $5 in one bill....and yup he tricks the other boy to trade his two dollars for the one $5 bill, telling the naive friend “two is better than one”. Lol the friend believed him but my brother knew that the $5 was more valuable than $2. Of course at a young age most children don’t have a clear concept of money, but he was very aware. (My mom found out later though and made him give the $5 back to the poor kid that was tricked). Same grade, the students have homework to write about what they want to be when they grow up. Most kids would say doctor, police officer, astronaut. But he says he wants to be a garbage man! Lol why a garbage man of all your dreams to have? And he gives such a well thought reply. Because a garbage man makes a decent living and it is an attainable occupation. It’s true, a garbage man gets paid well just picking up trash. At the time he said it a garbage man can earn $50,000 and up to $80,000 annually just by picking up trash. But who usually thinks so logically at such a young age. Usually children have very big dreams even those that seem far fetched. He was an unusual child that seemed to have an over fixation on money. But I think rather than being too grown up, it was just that he was aware of money sooner than most kids. He was still childish in many ways. And as the kids got older they caught up to his thinking as well of considering the future. And he had changed as he grew so he had a true career he wanted to pursue as a high schooler, a software engineer. But he’s still a little unique in how he solves problems in a very straight forward manner just like when he was a kid. But I think this kind of personality only further supports his future as a software engineer. Some kids are just a little different but it isn’t necessarily bad. In fact I think this kid is brilliant in his very matter-of-fact logic. It’s just part of who he is like my brother and he’ll mature and change as he grows up. He’ll have plenty of time to enjoy his youth, and I’m sure he will grow up to be a healthy person. A little different in behavior as a child doesn’t mean he can’t fit in with his peers. He just thinks differently which is okay. (But I also know Koreans like everyone to be the same so if the mom wants her son to be an exact copy of every other child she may be in for a tough reality check) (also my brother hated studying and he liked to do things his own pace, but he was very smart. He more than outclassed his fellow students but didn’t do his homework or take notes. So I hope she’s ready for the letters from the teachers, cuz my mom got plenty of them ) ;)
