A regular day in April 2023 unexpectedly turned fatal for a local couple. Donna Ventura spent 12 days in the ICU before her death after eating lunch at Dave's Sushi.

ATTENTION!!!!!! First and foremost my condolences to the affected families. RIP Donna Ventura and my thoughts are with all of those who were affected by this horrible negligence. I am a mycologist and hate to say it, but it is possible that the morels imported and served at the restaurant might have been contaminated by mold which can increase the amount of toxins contained in the morels. These morels were not domestic rather imported Chinese cultivated morels. Chinese morel mushroom farms have been found to use soil that is extremely polluted with heavy metals and they use harsh chemicals to control competing fungus, aka Fungicides, in addition to unsanitary packaging and handling. Please, please, please people do not consume raw morel mushrooms in any form or mushrooms that are imported from across the ocean. Always ask if the mushrooms are wild LOCAL mushrooms.

Edit, I did some research and I’m not quite sure if they got it from a local forager or what, because it sounds like somebody local in Missoula was for Jean from Merrell and undercooked his morales on a camping stove and died because of it too, even though his friends did not. It turns out the rocket fuel poison that dissipates when you heavily cook, males, builds up in the body and, some people bodies have accumulator too much and then it crashes, and other peoples bodies have ever reached that threshold yet, and they can handle it,

Morels are considered delicacies in my area. There is only one time a year when they appear. I would almost bet money that they were not morel mushrooms. They could have been false morels which look almost identical.
@kelliewonch60553 ай бұрын
They're a delicacy everywhere. But I was thinking the same thing about them being false morels 😢
@amandabrown80863 ай бұрын
I am also from an area where they are a delicacy but it’s common knowledge that Morels can be poisonous if undercooked or eaten raw. They contain hydrazine which is highly poisonous when ingested. The cooking process effectively destroys the hydrazine. Things like drinking can compound the effects of hydrazine and essentially make the no more lethal. The husband said they now know they were raw which is the problem

I gathered morels in the woods near our home in Illinois about 50 years ago. We had so many that I dried them so I could rehydrate them and cook them later. I was a new bride from Texas at the time. What amazes me is that absolutely no one told me that the mushrooms were poisonous if not cooked. Smh. I guess everyone knew but me.

They were morel mushrooms. Six other restaurants in the California area received the same mushrooms that Dave's received. The difference is they fully cooked their mushrooms while Dave's were raw and undercooked. They made several people sick on different days and not back to back.

Oh. Morel mushrooms are delectable. They actually sell for $50 a pound. I’ve eaten sautéed morel mushrooms. So delicious. Plus, they look like little brains and distinctly like little brains and that’s how you know they’re edible morel mushrooms. Very fancy. Apparently much too fancy for a peasant like you. Only the bougie-est most experienced chefs even know about them. 😂 I had the privilege to go morel mushroom hunting in the boonies in Iowa with said chef. They cook right down to nothing. Like mushrooms do. They were the best mushrooms I’ve ever had. 2008. It’s time for morel mushroom hunting season again. They come out in the spring on fallen elm tree wood but everything looks like soil, leaves, and bits of wood where they’re found. Hey Patrick, your genius is showing. But what a travesty!! Raw morels??? They wouldn’t even taste good I bet!!! Even if they were fine to eat raw… NO!! Some delicacies are better and meant to be babied and slowly cooked! Peasants. Ugh.

Dave Sushi was only closed 1 month for an investigation by the Health Department. The mushrooms sickened 50, hospitalized 3 and killed 2 people. 3 Lawsuits have been filed. Quietly reopened May 25, 2023. There are 95 employees. This is not a small operation. Popular place in a college town. The Morel Mushrooms were purchased from a distributor out of California.

That restaurant needs to be shut down if it isn't already. There are too many jokes about people needing health care when eating sushi that I am wary of any establishment serving it. If I were in Japan or knew the chef was extremely well trained and experienced, maybe I would eat it. But this didn't seem like a metropolitan area where someone with that level of skill would be working. So sorry for your pain, suffering, and loss. No one deserves that level of incompetence posing as a professional.

Eating out is not risky. Restaurants are subject to harsher health inspections than most hospitals which by the way are filthy and more likely to get you sick if you go there. These restaurant owners participated in a wildly unethical and illegal behavior of added foraged mushrooms to their food. To represent all restaurants as being similar is ridiculous.. FYI, I taught the Safe2Serve class and the dirtiest kitchens are people’s kitchens at HOME. How many people do you know who clean their countertops, knives and cutting boards with disinfectant multiple times a day ?? Probably none !! After having been a chef manager I usually eat just chips, veggies or breads and a soda at potlucks and neighborhood BBQ’s because I know most people don’t sanitize anything in their kitchen before they make their potato salad and hamburger patties !!
