Quick instructions on how to properly tab the Killer Dowel Pin on your 12v cummins engine.
NOTE: I removed the plastic retainer from the front cover seal to make it easier to install in cover. This plastic retainer should be left on when installing the cover to help guide it over the crank journal to avoid tearing the seal during installation. I installed mine without the plastic retainer on there and I was lucky it didn't tear. If you read down in the comments, others have had the seal tear.
The air gap spec for crank sensor is .049" (1.25mm) and you should use a brass feeler gauge to check it

One thing for anyone who doesn’t have the tools to take the fan off by the big nut, if you take the 4 bolts off the actual place the fan is mounted to the engine it comes right off easy and makes the job way faster.

Awesome video. Other KZfaqrs are annoying talking about give aways and other dumb crap. This video was straight to the point and simplified.. covered everything I needed to know. My 12 valve is caked in oil on the timing cover. Looks like the crank seal is leaking bad. Hopefully not a cracked timing case. After I get some seals ordered I'm tearing into mine. Thanks for the clear video!

That removable white plastic ring on the seal is there to make it easier to get the seal over the crank when you're reinstalling the cover. Less chance of damaging the seal during installation. When you put the cover back on and shove the seal over the crank, that white plastic ring pushes out part way so you can grab it from the front and pull it out the rest of the way after you've got the cover bolted down.

NoNonsenseKnowHow I know this video is old but I’ll still say, the plastic sleeve is for install over the crank. It keeps you from folding the seal over but you were lucky not to have that issue. Also the metal ring is the install tool, you use that to push the seal in and set the depth from the front, how you did it is ok and you even have the seal set in a different spot than factory and that keeps it out of the worn area of the crank.

Don't use lock tite on the crank bolts..the blots are soft...you'll never get them back out draw lines with a paint pen around them like your drawing a circle right across the bolts and front cover. Find the crank sensor air gap...it matters. Don't use whatever you have laying around for driving your dry seal into your front cover. You don't want to get your engine back together just to find out that you took a shortcut and it's leaking. Always replace the water pump...it's like $60-$100 bucks for a good one. Never seize the fan nut so if you decide to short cut everything I just told you it'll come off easily.

To keep the balancer from rotating when removing bolts l cut a piece of hard wood to place one end in the notch in the balancer and the other end against the frame rail on passenger side to loosen bolts…used frame rail on driver side when tightening bolts when putting balancer back on.

Good vid…. couple things not perfect but you got it done. You might mention while the cover is off it’s not a bad idea to remove the bolts behind the gears inside there and clean the threads and add thread lock and reinstall. They have been known to fall out or so I’m told… good insurance while all the hard work has already been done.

I'm a big fan of spray hi tack. And your seal process is all wrong. What you called a depth ring is used on the outside and you drive against that with a driver or block of wood till it bottoms on cover. The plastic guide stays in place and protects seal from edge of crankshaft. It will fall off once the seal is on the shaft.

so you want to actually set the depth from the front that flanged out. That what Cummins specs are for. You also want to leave that plastic sleeve on during install because that will guide the seal and not let it roll over. the plastic will push itself out. Learn form my mistake those seals are not cheap 50$ a pop at orielys
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I learned about the plastic sleeve after the fact. Luckily mine didn't damage the seal though and doesn't leak

What is a KDP?
@weepweep2225
@weepweep2225 4 жыл бұрын
Well brother I got bad news, did my kdp but apparently last owner had it come out on him and left the kdp OUT and JB welded the crack up. It barely leaks oil but anyways if you don’t mind can I get your opinion on the situation man. Apparently I’ve been riding around for close to 90k miles with no dowel and JB weld case 😅😅😅

Damn man sorry to hear that. I mean if it was me I would get a whole new timing cover and replace it. Better safe than sorry. But then again I'm pretty anal about mechanicals.

Dumb question...why not just use a magnet to pull the KDP out?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 4 жыл бұрын
No such as a dumb question. For one, if a magnet was strong enough to pull mine out, it probably wouldn't have still been in there in the first place. And also, it's somewhat of a structural component between the timing case cover and block. So really it should be in there for integrity reasons. But yeah if yours is loose and a magnet can pulled out I don't see any harm happening

The kdp is a press fit into the block and is used to secure the location of the timing case on assembly.

Isn't that the weak stuff? I don't think I've ever even used it. I'm blue or red on everything. They say red is permanent, but that's certainly not the case

I use blue or red. Doesn't matter. I prefer the red for that particular bolt. I've seen them done with none just torqued to 25ft/lb
