After a couple months of ownership, I'm ready to really start tearing into this bike to get it truly roadworthy. It's a cool little machine, but mine definitely has some obstacles to overcome.

This is great man, really an awesome bike. I also have the Tw200, between the two they are the only enduros I have ever owned or wanted. Have fun! Enjoyed the video, it was quiet funny!

I had a ke 100 about 30 years ago. It was also the first bike I did a top end rebuild on an also the first bike I did 100 mph on according to the speedometer lol . Also the bike was paid for by me from working a job at 13 years old. Great memories and love watching this video build.

I think I'd be very hard pressed to hit a legitimate 60mph on this bike, but it's so much fun. I had my dad ride it this summer and I figured he'd just call me an idiot, but he loved it! Hah

It also seems like one of those bikes everyone has a story about. Glad I was able to find one. Thanks for the kind words man.

@@matttriestodothings I was probably 120 pounds at 13 and when your an idiot kid I would brag how fast it was lol . Years later I rode one and was thinking that I was not sure if it would pull my 180 pounds around. It's just a cool bike imo. I recently seen one on Facebook and have been dreaming of it.

Where do you buy your parts from? Idk what mine all needs but I know it needs the switch for turning on and off the gas. Its a 92 Kawasaki Ke100 enduro
@matttriestodothings4 жыл бұрын
For this bike, mostly eBay. If I'm looking for OEM parts for other bikes I'll usually start with Partzilla, but this one I've just been keeping cheap, so eBay it is. I may have purchased the tires from Revzilla though. It looks like the petcock or "fuel tap" as it's reference on most parts sites is out of stock, so I'm not seeing what the price is. For a 2001 (which I believe is the same as the '92), I see part number 51023-1020 for the assembly. That being said, you can get a knock-off that'll most likely work fine for 1/4 the price on eBay. Just make sure to research that you're getting the right one and that it'll mate with the fuel tank correctly.

Getting an 86 this weekend. First bike. How do you like yours
@matttriestodothings5 жыл бұрын
It's a very neat bike, and I love how small it is and how it sounds. Still struggling with very little low end power in 1 and 2. I think it comes down to having this aftermarket needle. Going to lower the clip to the max setting to see if leaning it out gets me any closer. The air filter looks clean, but that may be on the list if that doesn't resolve the issue. It's super fun though, and everyone that rides it loves it.

Hey buddy do you still have the rest of the speedometer assembly? I'd like to buy it from you if so. The plastic mounting tabs broke off of mine so I basically need the housing.

Let me know if you think this would be usable for you. I can just send it assuming you're in the US. As you can see, there's some damage on the back and I removed the damaged speedometer. i.imgur.com/nXNmXL4.jpg i.imgur.com/ay2JBwo.jpg Unfortunately, going and comparing it to the one I replaced it with, it looks like the mounting tabs on my spare may also be broken off. i.imgur.com/vsUuma4.jpg i.imgur.com/FcqcgEz.jpg

Did the new battery ever end up helping in night rides?
@matttriestodothings3 жыл бұрын
No. I'm guessing there is a weak ground somewhere. When I get around to it, I should probably go around and clean all the electrical connections to determine if that helps it. I also was looking into 6V LED lights for the turn signals (tougher than you'd think to find), but I juts haven't gotten around to giving the KE attention recently. I put a clown horn on it though which is hilarious.

What did you end up doing for your sight glass?
@matttriestodothings3 жыл бұрын
I think I ordered a new one and silicon caulked it in.
@jakeh3144 Жыл бұрын
6v battery you say? I wonder if you could just use a hobby RC LiPo in place of that. I'm sure it would pack a lot more mAh than whatever was in there before. Could power an LED headlight too.
@matttriestodothings Жыл бұрын
Maybe that's something to consider. I actually started working on this thing for the first time in a few years yesterday since the sight glass started leaking 2stroke oil. Just finished epoxying in what I hope will be a fix. Anyway, earlier today I ordered 6V LED turn signals and brake lights--unfortunately they're nowhere near as common as 12V (understatement), so it cost more than expected. I think that'll help with those lights; however, I'm not confident it'll help the headlight much. I pulled the sealed headlight bulb and connected it directly to battery and it's just weak as hell. Currently going through and cleaning all terminals. Idk. If I was serious about riding it on the street more often I'd go through the hassle of trying to convert to 12V. Not likely something I'm going to do though.
@jakeh3144 Жыл бұрын
@@matttriestodothings does converting to 12v invoke a BEC or something?
@matttriestodothings Жыл бұрын
@@jakeh3144 it involves a bunch of shit I'm not qualified for, lol. I had to look up BEC--but I don't believe it involves eliminating the battery. I think it requires a stator and rectifier modification as well as swapping over everything to 12v that's 6v. That's an ignorant description on my part, but it was the short way of saying "probably not going to do it." maybe if I want a winter learning project. I could probably switch the headlight to some cheap Amazon 6v one but that defeats the purpose of trying to keep the bike looking stock. The 2001 was the last street legal 2 stroke from any of the big manufacturers. Maybe I care too much about preserving that tho.

@@matttriestodothings what do you think the max rider weight is for one of these? I want to look into buying one but I'm not a light rider by any means. Less concerned about speed/power and more concerned about suspension
@matttriestodothings Жыл бұрын
@@jakeh3144 According to this 2021 article on Revzilla, 270lb 😛 www.revzilla.com/common-tread/retrospective-review-the-kawasaki-ke100-sure-beats-a-moped-or-shoe-leather My dad rode it a few years ago when he was over 200lbs and loved it. That was around the infield of Road America so not really a street test. It depends what you want to do with it. I just took it to the grocery store for the first test ride of the year just now (hopefully the epoxy repair is holding in the sight glass...). It is not a fast bike. And I think my clutch is slipping. I would 100% not own one of these as an only bike unless I lived on some farmland. It's an absolute riot on grass and woods trails. But it's just somewhat of a novelty on the boring, busy, and straight streets that surround me. I'm tempted to ride it to work someday but there are some 55mph roads I need to take and that's probably completely topped out. I weigh about 165lb. People claiming over 65mph are smoking crack or throwing it off a cliff. I've taught a bunch of people to ride a motorcycle using this bike (might explain the clutch slipping, lol). It's very inviting for a novice and hilarious to ride as someone with more experience. But whether you should get one depends on what you want to do with it. If you're bigger and aren't worried about top speed so much... I'd also look at a TW200. Different experience, but if you like it, you can modify the suspension quite a bit to accommodate a heavier person. The one I bought was setup for 2-up riding and it's wayyyyy too heavy for me. But some of my much bigger friends love it so I just leave it alone.

For thr screws, get a set of the J.I.S screwdrivers. Best thing for thr Japanese bikes
@matttriestodothings3 жыл бұрын
Yea, I've got a couple. They're definitely my favorite screwdrivers. They're not the end-all-be-all if the screws are already stripped or corroded, but they sure make things a lot easier to work on than a Phillips.
@trainell3 жыл бұрын
how reliable are these?
@matttriestodothings3 жыл бұрын
Probably as reliable as you can get. The bike went mainly unchanged for nearly 30 years. In 1982 it moved away from mechanical ignition timing, and at some point the steel tank got changed to an aluminum one. The air/fuel metering is done by a rotary valve (as opposed to reed valves), so it's not going to wear out. I'd say the primary worries I have is the engine being run dry on oil in the fuel/oil mixture either due to negligence by an owner or the oil pump failing--but I don't have any suspicion that they're terribly prone to failure. The 6V charging system and lights kind of suck though. They're damn near worthless. I'm going to try out some new 6V LEDs (not as common as you would think) and see if that helps.
