Roberto is a great but what takes him to the next level is his ability in the scramble and lighting fast reactions. Keenan shut that down. He slowed the match way down and frustrated Roberto. In the end Roberto hung on for dear life in full posture breaking closed guard (a good strategy for winning on points but not the submission dominance he’s grown accustomed to the last year or two), he knew he was stymied and the match was not flowing to his liking. He took the win but he wasn’t proud of it because he knew in many ways it was a loss. Also, Keenan subbed him in a minute or two a few years ago so I think he was looking for a revenge tap. In short he won but none of it went down the way he wanted it to happen.

@@justsayin3600 Roberto was gassed and barely hung on for the win. If there was a couple more minutes in the match Keenan would have tapped him. He pulled guard (stalled) the last minute hanging on for dear life because he struggled through the whole match never really getting the scramble he was looking for. Other then the opening couple minutes Keenan fraught him perfect. He slowed him down, controlled everything Roberto did for 70% of the match. I like Roberto he’s a great competitor and will be a multi time world champ but he relies on his scrambling ability to out athletic opponents and Keenan shut that all down after the opening

@@crazyhorse4807 Woulda, coulda, shoulda. It's Keenan's fault he got down early, and every time he evened the score, Roberto would immediately get the lead back. It comes down to the fact that Keenan didn't show a sense of urgency, not until it was too late. You can't say Keenan fought him perfect when he allowed himself to be swept twice and taken down, each time putting him behind.

@@BestWayKilla of course I can say he faught him perfect. Roberto is extremely skilled young stronger and faster and has been submitting everyone he faces. Keenan had a great fight strategy and implemented it well. Roberto was very frustrated and if you watch any of his videos you know he usually dominates his opponent to the point of playing with them. In the end you're right, Keenan lost but anybody who knows what they are watching cam tell Keenan was starting to control the fight and Roberto was just trying to hang on. It's always fun to see high level competition, but I agree. Sub only matches are so much more interesting to watch because it's more in the spirit of Jiu Jitsu and doesn't penalize taking risks.
@BestWayKilla
@BestWayKilla 3 жыл бұрын
Sub-only matches feature just as match stalling and gaming the rules as points matches, and either end up being time limit draws or just a contest of who doesn't gas out quicker. Points matches are just fine, they place a premium on position, and offer objective criteria to determine who was better during a match, since, as it turns out, high level black belts happen to be very difficult to submit.
@stephenhurst1348
@stephenhurst1348 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there shouldn't be a defined point system. It should be based on either very experienced judges...who can easily tell if a person is stalling, or getting a take down and just sitting there just because they think they're up on the score cards; or submission only.
@interestedparty7523
@interestedparty7523 3 жыл бұрын
@@BestWayKilla So true, "Sub-only" sounds good when you hear it, but sub only matches are a false narrative too. I agree, place a premium on position and offer objective criteria to determine who was better. At a high level, subs don't happen often and hour-long matches don't even represent anything approaching the spirit of marital arts and self-defense as unlimited time is garbage, if anything, short encounters are more realistic.

Keenan could of won that match. He waited too long before pushing the action. When against guys with good scrambles he likes to wait till close to the end of the match to do the sweep. Tbh keenan seemed very nonchalant in this match. Notice how he did not fight at all for that double leg attempt? I just feel like he either didn't respect his opponent at all or just really wasn't 'in it'. I feel like it was the latter.

Why does the ref keep moving his gi?

Usually refs try to remove a trapped foot with the gi in regular matches. Keenan was placing it there intentionally I think, but the ref kept trying to clear it 'cause he thought it would help :P.

Might be wrong but, I don't think you're allowed to control with your foot inside the gi, only on the lapels.

did everything he could to squeak out the win on points, never looking for a finishing position, but isn't happy with the win?

Exactly. He settled for holding closed guard (stalling) to secure the win. Keenan is too smart for him still. Roberto is awesome but Keenan showed if you take away the scramble and back take Roberto seems a little lost.

Awful camerawork wtf. Especially at the start of the fight there were so many moments where the ref was standing directly in front of the fight
