Ben is 24 years old, has Down's Syndrome, and an appetite for life that hardly compares.
This ambitious, honest, and well-articulated young man is not letting anything stop him in his quest to represent New Zealand in the Special Olympics in the ice-skating discipline.

Oh this was a beautiful documentary, thanks Ben for sharing your special moments with us. Such a hardworking young man, no complaining about anything. He really puts me to shame, he works, does all the housework, cooks and sports. Best documentary I have seen in a very long time.

For most people in this category (have everything and fail to do anything) this is really just an appearance. Most people who struggle in life like that, have a reason. Perhaps they didn't have a supporting family, they were neglected or abused and the trauma gets in the way of their ability to build a life they enjoy. What we experience in relationships during childhood is important, it is most important. Feeling safe and supported gets you further than being great at algebra. In the 1950s people with down Syndrome had a life expectancy of 10 years.

What a beautiful story. What a beautiful and handsome young men, with many goals in his life. Hé is living them. A lot better than many if not most of us. He was very good with his skating. I would have given him the Gold. Keep on beeing who you are. You are a real inspiration.

Special Olympics is a fabulous program. I am a basketball official and I volunteered to ref the state basketball tournament for Special Olympics last year. It was the most fun I have had on the court in 100s of games. The athletes worked very hard and took the games very seriously.

What a amazing person Ben hes done fantastic I'd be so proud if was my boy. As for the coach I'm not sure ste has right attitude if you swore at my boy I'd go mental with you. Your not a good coach !!!!! So hes needs a better coach for him. My daughter is an iceskater also and believe her coaches would not talk to her like that.

Knowing people with this syndrome and watching many diff documentary shows about it I would say the name should be changed to Upbeat Syndrome. They are usually very happy and outgoing. Also, a bit of trivia. You may notice many of them have cold sores and wear a lot of chapstick. That is because people with this condition are more prone to having angular cheilitis which are sores in the corners of their mouths. Similar to cold sores or the herpes simplex virus.
