One thing I should have made more clear is that the birds don’t try to land on this - they don’t get hurt. The purpose of the spikes and tape is to deter them. They see the area and they stay away. This tends to be more effective than the fishing line method, which is why I use it.

Great solution... thanks! Do you think the reflective tape alone would work? If not, perhaps the tape plus a helical loop of fishing line (like scrolled barb wire on the top if a fence) would spooke them. I've got a large porch that has a lot of nesting spots...
@LRN2DIY

@@Dan0__ I think the tape alone is definitely worth a try, especially if it catches any light. Adding the fishing line could really improve it too. I'd love to hear how it goes.

you could have used the ball point of the needles instead of the pointy one.. just stick to the wood and won't need even half of the ones you've put as they stand as obstacles for them already.. This would prevent them from coming and also would not pose any harm to them. The same way we step on dog's poop when we are distracted they might not see the needles and hurt themselves or even die.

That is worth a try. I am all for nature, but the thing about birds that I have observed is that if you install anything outdoors that has a surface to perch on, the birds will be perching and pooping, guaranteed!

Change your needle bins to a blunt thicker diameter item like stake wire, does the same thing, without the drama in the comment section. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

Yeah, I probably should have anticipated the misunderstanding. Good point on the blunt pins.

Does that reflective tape ruin your paint or wood?
@AdrienBCaldwell

I can't see this being a good option for areas exposed to rain. Those needles would rust overtime and that would bleed onto painted areas. Perhaps if they were galvanized they might not rust.

It’s actually really tough to see so long as the tape doesn’t come over the front. The pins are really thin so curb appeal isn’t really affected.

Thats not dumb tbh. Good one, but i need 35meters so i need solid enough to not have to go back up. They can bend them down easily

Good idea. The aluminum tape should hold up ok in weather, but some spikes in the would would hold up better. The birds will find another place to sit and poop.

A pole with a small kite that looks like an owl etc. works a treat. I have one in my garden and it has been working fine for two years now.

Drew’s idea is great. There’s also a reflective foil ribbon you can buy that they don’t like - that can be hung on poles or even from the backs of the chairs.

Movement scares birds-hang a long, 1" or 2" wide strip of thin, UV resistant material and let it hang down over and near the furniture and let the movement of the material from the wind scare them away.

I would just use smaller hooks to narrow the gap, because like birds I too dislike shiny objects on the porch.

Almost all birds that annoys in this way are feral pigeons. Wild birds have better manners.

Sure they’ll quick learn not to perch…but despite a few comments here…a few birds will get caught out and receive a nasty stab before getting the point. Use blunt wire like bike spokes…less risk of cruelty.

You can just paint a big circular pattern with different collors near the area you want birds out, make it look like an owl's eye. Small biurds will just stay away because they recognise it as an owl, and they want to keep their distance from the predatory big bird. This is specially effective against pigeons.

@@TheAughoti my neighbours has put spikes on their fence and I have often see the birds try and land on them. I noticed one had injured its foot after trying to land on the fence. The outside is their world, not just ours and there is more than one way to stop them landing on fences without causing harm to the birds.

Sure, I could do that but that’s me and my sign. When they’re all over your stoops, roofline, eves, porch, etc you can’t just take them all down. Plus my home is surrounded by wilderness with lots of areas for birds to hang out so I’m leaving my sign up.
