The psychological progression thing is very important. Don't chase belts but it's important to hear from your instructor that they've acknowledged your growth. I think you hit the nail on the head with that one.

I feel this one. I trained several times a week (4-5) and didn't get my first stripe until 8 months in. I thought my coach hated me.

Beginners need beginner classes, it’s that simple
@bryancjacobs
@bryancjacobs Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a great point. I remember being in the beginner class and at times feeling overwhelmed with how complex it was to learn a move. So many benefits came from being introduced slowly to more and more ideas. Eventually, the old brain seems ready to consume BJJ info. Until then it helps to have a place to soak it up rather than firehose it

You are so, so right about instructor-student relationships. My first instructor ran a very, very successful academy, and at the peak of our prosperity as a gym, fell into that trap and ended up killing himself and leaving a family behind. The cascading effect was enormous in this case. The aftermath threw probably 120 people into a state of shock, grief, confusion or disillusionment that lasted for years. Some turned to drugs and there was even a murder-suicide by one of the fighters a year later.

I left a gym when I realized that it was I that was committed and not the gym. I got very hurt…and the owner was more concerned with my gym payment than my health. Boom.

I feel best at gyms where I don’t feel like an idiot asking for help on technique and instructors seem neutral but always helpful with BJJ. Currently train at a gym where I usually don’t ask for technique questions from 1 instructor because it’s not exactly encouraging to be told you’re stupid or retarded as a white belt because you can’t grasp a movement or remember a sequence. My favorite places to train the instructors seemed happy to show technique

I had luck in my life and only trained at very cool gyms. I travelled a lot when I was younger and I learned a lot of good habits from the schools I trained in and try to implement a lot of those.

I would say for the most part that my coach never uses positive reinforcement except for stripes. I was 1 stripe purple belt for 9 months and the only comment I received was "attack submissions more"

Hey Keenan! it was so AWESOME to meet you at the San Diego Zoo! i spent the rest of the day hoping to run into you again so i could talk to you instead of acting like a teen age girl meeting justin beeber.I would have told you i model my butterfly loop choke, knee on belly sweep and double under pass on your videos. I didnt know you were based in San Diego, I would have visited your school instead of Rodrigo Medeiros! well,next time!

Hey Keenan, do a video wear you guide a lower rank belt against a higher one, but stick some ear plugs in the higher rank belt try to figure a way wear only the lower rank can hear you. That would be awesome! thanks Keenan!

Thoughts on software/iPad check in to “automate” sending an email/text if you missed X number of classes?

I would recommend sending you, the owner, the email rather than the student missing the classes. Then, you can follow up with them rather than the student receiving a bland automated message.

Reasons I've left different gyms: Gym 1: moved abroad Gym 2: Not feeling welcomed and dirty as hell. Gym 3: The teaching sucked, nobody was able to win anything and I wasn't making any progress. Gym 4: current gym, thinking about leaving because I don't like how the class is structured. 3 techniques and porrada is a horrible way of teaching. Reason why I haven't left is because I like the people there
