At my dojo they always try to straight out both arm out when striking men, but I can't do it whatever I tried, it only cause pain on my shoulders, so I am trying to find a better way to do it. Your video helps me understand that I don't really need to straight both arm at all.

Yo, I joined a kendo club in Tokyo not long ago and your videos have helped me a lot! Do you have any advice on how to use the right muscles for striking, for example using はら? Thanks for your uploads! :)
@KendoGuide
@KendoGuide 8 жыл бұрын
+DiLiNiTi You are in Tokyo? I bet a lot of people here envy you coz many want to go to Japan and learn kendo. If you are a beginner, don't worry about thinking about details yet. Just listen to your teacher and copy what he/she does. If you want to know how you should be using hara, it should be always tight. It means you should fill up seika-tanden with ki. Now not many can do that so don't get too much info now. Do what you need to do at this moment, which is do what you are told to do by your sensei. You are learning kendo in Japan so ask your teacher what you need to work on at this moment. That is the BEST way for you to learn!

Abderrahmen Besbes You're very welcome! You are quite right. With the shorter tsuka like katana, I would be possible but with the long tsuka of the shinai, it is very hard to do. I wonder, why is there two ways to strike men? I mean to hit the forehead or the top of the head? Which one is "more correct" regarding to the posture? p.s.: My Sensei did not mentioned (yet) where to strike, as long as i keep my shinai in the middle. I'm gonna ask him too, but I'm curious about Your opinion.
@KendoGuide
@KendoGuide 5 жыл бұрын
There shouldn't be. As I mentioned, I learned the men should be the forehead. There are some people say that men is the top of the head, but their reason behind that is to make "a good sound" to get a point in matches. Of course, I didn't ask every one of the kendoists in the world where they hit when striking men and why. So I only know what I learned. I don't want to stick my nose to someone's teachings without knowing why they are doing that.

すみません, that is, is it worth starting the MEN strike with lowering the shoulders? And until when should they be lowered? Start moving your forearms only after the shoulders are completely lowered? Or should you not go to extremes, and you can not drop your shoulders completely? It is scary to rethink your own technique, because i'm are afraid to understand something wrong and, as a result, not be capable of anything at all :(

What is the difference between men forehead strike and men top head strike? Are there pros and cons to each?
@KendoGuide
@KendoGuide 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment and question. This is a common question. A target we should aim for as a men strike should be the forehead. Not the top of the head. I am not sure why people think the men is the top of the head now. What I heard a while ago is that because the top of the head sounds good. So in a match, they can get a point. And they can hit the top of the head even when their opponent blocks your men strike. So what I learned from my teachers is that men should be the forehead.
@javierl.orellana5193
@javierl.orellana5193 5 жыл бұрын
Hiro Imafuji, thank you very much for the clarification. I’ve also heard people say hitting the top of the men makes a better sound (which it does) but I do notice when I do that my left arm is misaligned because it feels like I’m reaching. I prefer the forehead myself but some senseis at my dojo prefer the top of the men.
