Birds are the #3 pet next to dogs and cats, but they're the #1 rehomed. Before deciding to get a baby bird, consider how your life may change in 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 80 years as some of the larger parrots generally outlive their hoomans. There is an over abundance of birds in rescues. Please consider adopting before shopping.

That is wonderful advice. I agree that there are many factors to consider before making the decision to purchase a parrot. That said, I do disagree with you when you compare the overpopulation issue with dogs and cats to parrots. If that were the case, the population of parrots in the USA would be going up not down. When you look at the numbers, we started with over 280 species of parrots in US captivity and we now have under 35. Also, there is no shelter or rescue on this planet that is euthanizing parrots weekly, this is something dog and cat shelters do because of the overpopulation issue. I do not believe a parrot is a good pet for everyone, but it could absolutely make a good pet for the right person. You mentioned an overabundance of parrots in rescues but how many birds are these organizations adopting out? I am a huge supporter of recuses and have friends that run their own sanctuaries but it is widely known across the industry that the adoption requirements for some of these organizations can be unrealistic for many people. This in turn causes people to buy instead of adopt. One could also make the argument that some parrots in rescues have behavioral issues, and/or trauma that cannot be fixed overnight. These special birds require a keeper with knowledge and experience. Why should anyone be shamed for purchasing a baby bird without these issues? How you raise a bird has a huge effect on how they mature which I’m sure you already know. I’d love to produce a video on this topic explaining both sides. Would you be able to send the data that supports your statistic to theafricangreyjournal@gmail.com ?
