I have had Baby, my Congo African Gray for 25 years, and Seymour, my Red-Lored Amazon for 33 years. I wondered if there were any Red-Lored Amazons in that store, so I could find out what they cost these days. Neemie (Seymour's nickname) cost me $899 in 1990. When we got Baby in 1999, we paid $1200 for her.

I have 2 amazons. One Red-Lored and a Yellow-Naped. Love them. They are also prone to fatty liver as I lost my 37 year old Orange-Winged to it. She was wild caught and they didn't have the pellet blends available when I got her. The red macaw was a scarlet. The way you can tell is they have yellow on the upper part of their wings whereas green wings have green. Also, he has no small feathers on his face and the greenwing does. To tell if a parrot is a baby, they have dark eye which eventually lighten.

The exotic pet trade as a whole is dying in the U.S. but aviculture is definitely dying the fastest. I think part of the problem is that it's so vilified. Everyone even people who keep these animals say they don't make good pets. The other problem is we all broke and every things getting more expensive.

Also be careful to "legit" breeders, brokers selling birds. I bought my male Ecclectus from "The Bird Man" and had it flown to LA. Great communication and tracking, but when I got the bird, he had a lame foot which we thought was damaged on the flight. When I went back and blew up the pictures when he was placed in the transport crate - I could see his foot was lame there. He has turned out to be a great bird, but I paid full price. The "Bird Man" should have been up front and offered the bird at a discount and/or paid for the flight to LA, or kept the bird for himself...., live and learn. I will never have a bird flown in again, or buy from "The Bird Man" (east coast) again, even though the airline was excellent, and even "The Bird Man's" communication was really good, he was dishonest in his assessment of the bird and knew the bird had a lame foot when shipped. At almost two years old, the birds foot is still lame.

You can use a washable shower curtain on the wall behind the cage . Helps with splatters , and can help provide more visual interest. Parrots have excellent color vision, I would love to see them have more visual enrichment. Toys , I try for five , a foot toy, a moveable puzzle like toy, , a noise making one, easy to destroy, and difficult to destroy. I love the natural foraging Matts of seagrass, with all kinds of textures natural materials attached . Stainless steel veggie cage forager. I like to provide a sturdy large ceramic bowl with a couple of inches of water for self choice baths a couple of times a week, I also use it as an enrichment and float toys in it as well

Outstanding video. I have recently started researching birds/parrots and as you probably know, I have subscribed to your channel and commented on several videos. You have been fantastic at responding and continuously putting out useful information. I am not a younger person that is obsessed with social media or video games, etc., and most of the videos I see are about cuddly birds and/or talking birds. As a retired person (not old) that isn't wealthy but isn't poor, I was shocked at the cost of parrots today. I have no interest in breeding birds, I'm just interested in having a bird(s) as a companion. There are several breeds that I won't even consider simply based on the price of the birds. That's a shame because I have a lot of time to offer and I have a safe, committed situation for a bird. Of course, everyone wants to make money, that's a given. But like many other hobbies, many new people that could become the lifeblood of the hobby are turning away because it's become a rich persons hobby, more or less. It's not a matter of quality over quantity, the amount of birds in rescues or being "sold" on Craigslist and similar platforms should make people aware of the fact that the higher pricing isn't creating a better quality of birds or clientele, it's simply creating less potentially high quality hobbyists to be interested and invested in the hobby. Losing hundreds of species of birds in the US alone should give every serious aviculturist concern and it should motivate them to do something different. Thanks again for this excellent video.
@Africangreyjournal
@Africangreyjournal 7 күн бұрын
Thank you so much! Im glad you are enjoying the videos. I completely agree, It truly is mind-blowing how much prices have increased since covid. It has created such a huge barrier to entry for newcomers. I wish more breeders would adopt the approach of breeders in Europe. They do not heavily focus on creating cuddly pets, many are kept as aviary birds that spend most of their time with other birds. It creates a much more well balanced bird and you don't see many of the mental health issues that we see in the USA like plucking and skin mutilation. The majority of baby birds raised in the US are heavily imprinted and placed into the pet trade. For birds like Cockatoos, African Greys and Eclectus, this imprinting can sometimes lead to males being incompetent at mating/pair bonding with a bird of their own kind. Thanks again for your comment, I really appreciate it.

Hey, thanks for watching! How old is your pair? Ive found that the best way to stimulate Greys to breed is to add a significant amount of soft wood to the nest. Chewing the wood and preparing the nest has a huge impact on the fertility of the male and it also induces ovulation in the female. You’d also want to increase the amount of protein in their diet when you add the wood as this is a great stimulant as well.
