For this purpose it makes no difference whatsoever, but your technique for tying the bowline creates a false/Dutch/Cowboy bowline with the bitter end outside the loop. Now I'm going to be accused of being a knot nazi....

Get some kettlebells and do swings, squats and deadlifts. They work both lower and upper body.

@@carryonsailing understood as I was US Navy, aircraft carrier, but understand the sea. But a 35 lbs/16 kg is really all that you need. Wrap it in foam when not in use to make it less dangerous in rough seas. Just an idea.
