Keeping the gaslights lit in Worcester

WORCESTER, MASS. - They've been knocked aslant by wayward cars, snapped by falling trees, targeted by pellet gun snipers and periodically marked for extinction by forward-looking mayors and city managers since the 1950s.
And, yet, a few remaining gaslights, some of them more than a century old, continue to cast a warm Victorian glow on parts of modern Worcester. Twenty-seven gaslamp street lights have survived here for generations alongside their more luminous, coarser electric replacements.
"They look so much nicer than an electric light. I wish there were more of the them throughout the city. But times change," said John Corazzini, who tends to the illumination artifacts in his spare time.

Fantastic. Old gas lamps are beautiful. We had them all over the streets of Boston in the 1950s.

In Baltimore, we still had some until 1957. The last ones were in the Little Italy section just east of downtown. The first ones were installed back in 1817 when Rembrandt Peale founded the first gas utility in the US. When we had our present house built in 1999, we had an outdoor gas lamp installed by the front sidewalk that runs off propane gas. It's an open flame burner that does blow out sometime if the wind blows too hard.

This is pretty cool. I was born in Worcester and grew up just outside the city, and I never even knew there were gaslights in the city.

He mentioned those [2] lamps on Greenleaf Terrace - I lived one house away from there (at 747 Pleasant Street). There was another such Terrace (no longer named on Google Maps) one house away in the other direction, that had the gas lamps, too.

I think no matter how modern the world gets I think they should always have Victorian gas lamps or make new ones. one thing that I can't stand is the telephone wires cluttering up the landscape

Who went round lighting 1000s of them before it went dark, refilling gas seems like a scam.

There's quite a few in Boston, but they are not maintained properly. They burn all day long.

That's what a street gas light does,it burns 24/7. It's not a Coleman lantern.

I was just wondering myself. They don't appear to have a timer/ automatic ignition mechanism on them. And given that they're burning in daylight when this dude's working on them, I think they're left on 24/7.

It appears they do,which I didn't realise. I always heard about there being a guy with a pole who would go down steets in olden days lighting the lamps at dusk,so he must presumably have gone round extinguishing them at dawn. Where I am in England there are a small number of places that still have them. The electric ones used to have clocks inside the column to regulate their lighting up and going out times, then in the later half of the 70s they started replacing those with photoelectric cells that could sense if it was dark enough, often little black and white conically-topped gizmos visible on top of the lamp. The big, functional ones on plain steel poles that used to line only the motorways and A roads have found their way into towns, where away from really urban parts and especially in residential areas they frequently look incongruous to the character of their surroundings, and the new white LED ones can be a bit harsh. These old-style ones, whether gas or housing electric lamps, look so much nicer with their soft, warm glow and decorative iron poles but they're probably more expensive to run for often hard-pressed municipal authorities.

Let those who like 'em, light 'em, i.e. pay to operate/maintain. They are pretty though.
