Salmon once swam in every major river in California and they provided and continue to provide an invaluable resource for Native peoples. In some areas like the Klamath River Basin, salmon are at the center of the world and integral to the environmental and cultural survival of the Yurok, Karuk, and Hupa peoples. But modernization forever altered watersheds across the state by concretizing rivers, siphoning water for agricultural production, and building dams to facilitate hydroelectric power. The effects on fish populations have been devastating and many Native groups have protested against these threats to their way of life. In this video, we explore how the Yurok, Karuk, and Hupa peoples have maintained their close relationship with salmon, how they have fought civil rights battles to secure tribal fishing rights, and how they have mobilized against the environmental degradation of the Klamath and Trinity Rivers resulting from dams, large scale agriculture, and the marijuana industry.

As Americans, it doesn't matter what nationality one is, you are an American. Being so, we all come from family history and most keep traditions going. The Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Africans and so on. Being American native still makes one an American. Do all these different cultures have treaties? NO, and no one should. We are ALL Americans. We have a unique land, such as the Constitution dictates, NOT a treaty dictates Work, and show yourself an American. TIME FOR CHANCE. No more difference.

Your comment is vile on multiple levels. First of all, Native Californians were INVADED and their suffering is protected by Treaties. I suggest you reevaluate your perspective from the White Colonializer point of view.

Why don’t they fish with poles. Why use nets. It’s more humane for any fish to be caught on a pole and why bring up huge nets of fish. That’s not right no matter what color and ethnicity you are. The Chinese are dragging nets in Alaska. They are taking more, and killing more of all fish. Fish with a pole. Period
