I am finally taking control of the weeds in the vacant NYC lot next to our community garden with cover crops - you gave me many ideas, including encouraging me to keep planting at the end of October, as we are about a month later than you with the frosts.

Absolutely fantastic. Next time I hope you can talk about how early you can plant lentils, flax, or chickling vetch in the spring as a cover.

It seems like the vetch growing in with the cereal rye and triticale would help to maintain the palatability of the rye forage as it matures. Maybe that would extend the forage value of the rye for another week or two.

I have had great success grazing cereal rye and hairy vetch with dairy cattle. Hairy vetch or winter peas seem to be the best legumes, either seems to work best with rye. If I was still farming I might add in forage turnips or forage beets but with either of those you need to remove the dairy cattle several hours before milking to avoid off-flavoring the milk.

No, it is very similar in emergence to other winter cereals

Anytime you say,”seems like “. It means you don’t know what you’re talking about.
