I’ve worked in restaurants and they start acting like that after years of crappy customers, restaurants don’t start out acting like that, the customers usually force them to make ridiculous sounding rules . For example there’s a crab restaurant in New York that had to start making parties of 6 or more have automatic gratuity after large party’s with 1000 dollar plus bills were leaving the server 10 bucks or stiffing them, and now those same customers are complaining about how unfair that is .

I went to Atlanta in July for a film contest. We stayed at the Omni Hotel and there were a few restaurants within walking distance. One night, our entire party walked down to Margaritaville, and it was packed. We were waiting for over two hours but never got a table. The hostess allowed us to get free drinks and offered to put our order in while we waited, but that was part of the reason the kitchen was so slammed. They were taking orders for tables they didn't have. We decided to leave and walk down the road to a sports bar, but the wait time was just as bad. I've never experienced anything like that before.

I suspect that if a restaurant started charging a dollar for butter it is because they had problems with people taking extra butter and wasting it. Other restaurants have probably had issues with people reserving a large table and holding it while not ordering and then the rest of the party shows up a couple of hours later. I don’t think any of those rules exist in a vacuum

1-taking extra butter?? Unless we’re talking about the Waffle House-🤔who goes to a sit down restaurant, eats bread & butter-orders EXTRA butter, then takes it home. Idk where you frequent, but the type of places I dine at, it’s extremely cumbersome to take a stick of butter 🧈 off of its serving dish, find something to ‘wrap’ it in, hide it, THEN eat an appetizer and/or dinner and possibly desert and THEN leave with said (now) MELTED (& likely inedible) butter. If one can afford a $100 meal, surely a $16 roll of the ‘good’ butter from the grocery store, isn’t far fetched. But let’s say the butter is in packets…again, bread & butter are served prior to appetizers, main courses or deserts. So even then, taking packets of butter would result in a mess as it would melt! So ‘stealing’ butter doesn’t make sense! Oh, and at the Waffle House, THEY hand you the butter & im SURE they aren’t handing out heaps. As far as restaurants NOT willing to serve water🥴. 1- 99.9% of parties that ask to be seated before everyone arrives, has at BARE minimum 75% of the party there. 2- why would ANYONE arrive HOURS late to a restaurant? (Did you even think that through?) 3- why on earth would ANYONE drive to a restaurant, wait to be seated, ‘reserve’ 5 extra seats, and only order water? (Since u said ppl reserve tables & don’t order food😵‍💫) Besides, like I said previously-normally the majority of the party has already arrived. So the 4-5 empty chairs that are sitting at a table that seats 20 wouldn’t really matter-unless the restaurant suddenly had ANOTHER party of 20/20+ WITHOUT reservations (rare). (And that’s because each table has a set amount of chairs soooooo the table for 20 holds 20 chairs. No other table should ‘need’ the chairs🥴! But then again, @@freddyman7967 you did say ‘ghetto’ so maybe you’re familiar with tricks that don’t normally occur in my area, so I therefore am unaware of.
