I cannot remember what video it was but there was a clip where they were recording their last album not long before his death and he was slightly overweight from his medication and he looks so exhausted…yet he still played with so much energy. He was sweating hard and breathing heavy…he never held back.

As a drummer I like to think that Keith Moon's playing blurred the distinction between playing time and playing fills. A unique and revolutionary way to play. Mad brilliance.

The Who had a lead singer, a lead guitarist, a lead bassist and a lead drummer. They were all that good. Same as Zeppelin.

Keith was a musical drummer. He knew when to hold the beat. His his fills really flow with the song. Although he was really busy he never got in the way. Ringo was similar but much less flamboyant. You’ll find Ringo was a huge influence on most of the next generation of drummers. Moon was a one off. Great but very hard to learn his style of player. I have never heard a Moon sound from anyone else. I love Ringo’s son Zak on drums with the Who, fantastic but you can hear he’s not trying to do Moon. No one can.

The only other drummer with his passion,, to me, my opinion only,,, Clem Burke from Blondie........

@Andy Butler Absolutely right , having a good time being a loon behind & in front of a drum kit doesn't make u a great drummer, Moon was limited & didn't have many tricks in his bag, Carmine Appice or Mitch Mitchell were 10 times the drummer Moon or Bonham could hope to be.

I've seen Roger speculate in recent years that he may have had Aspergers. Combine that with substance abuse and an untrained natural talent for rhythm and percussion and that's one hell of a mix. The really sad thing is that the the drug he was prescribed should never have been given to him without very strict supervision from a medical professional. If they had realised at the time how powerful that drug was he would never have been allowed to take it home with him.

I never liked the “sloppy drummer” idea. No, he wasn’t a traditionally “good” drummer but The Who was by no means a traditional band. Their beautiful music would’ve never been the same. Kenney Jones is an awesome drummer (Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake, particularly Happiness Stan is some of the best drumming I’ve ever heard) but he doesn’t quite work for The Who. Face Dances is killer but not quite “The Who”. Keith was irreplaceable. His energy, and Pete’s genius, is what made Quadrophenia possible. I STILL hold that album to be the greatest work of music I’ve ever heard, and I listen to a ridiculous amount of music like from when I wake up till I go to sleep. Bless you and God bless the motherfucking greatest band, besides maybe the Beatles, to ever touch this planet!

Very true. He played from the absolute centre of his soul. He punctuated Rogers vocals. Made space for Petes guitar when needed. Locked solid with The Ox. In a league of his own. Bonham had groove AND power. Charlie just hit it on the money every time.... still does. Ringo was Ringo. Mick Fleetwood was very underrated for groove and space. See the pattern emerging? All great drummers show their character. 🎶 (no emoge for a drum, why is that??!!) Peace.

I don't know....I saw them a few weeks before John kicked it, and it's the best concert I have ever been to. As Roger says, bringing Ringo's son into the band changed everything.

I understand Zep not play throughout the rest of their hay-day, but as of 2020. It's been 20 years. I'm trivializing Robert Plant's pain on lose John Bonham, but these guys are close (if not already) to their twilight. One more tour in their 70's could and should be their last hurrah.

Playing drums for 5+ hours a day as a kid sounds like the hyper focus of ADHD too. If Keith had Autism as Pete suggested, plus ADHD, the drumming probably saved his sanity until self medicating won.

Yeah, but John didn't "really" die due to drugs. He died due to a heart attack. 95% of people could've snorted the small amount of cocaine he did and would have survived, but not when you are taking meds to keep your heart ticking. I do not advocate the use of cocaine, but I 100% believe that most people who die from it like James Honeymoon Scott from The Pretenders or basketball star Len Bias do so due to any underlying medical condition. Mick Fleetwood said he used cocaine all day and night for 25 straight years and had no problems except financial issues. If he can do that, one sniff of coke is not going to kill a musician unless something else is going on, and based on all the evidence that exists, John didn't go on some drug binge in Vegas. He shouldn't have been using coke with the heart issue. Just like someone should not be drinking Wild Turkey when they possess cirrhosis of the liver due to non-alcoholic reasons ( for instance, the usage of certain bi polar meds that devastated the liver of a buddy of mine.).
