In this video, we explore and photograph an abandoned high school with a graveyard on its grounds. Clarksdale High School has been closed since 1999, but the graves have been there since the early 1800s, when the land was part of a southern plantation.

My old high school, too. It feels like such a desecration. Kind of "sacred grounds" to us back then -- some of the best years of our lives. What I remember the most about that covered walkway between the Jr Hi and the HS is . . . that's where our exam grades were posted. Now, THAT could be spooky indeed!! So sad to see it in such disrepair. Who would ever have thought this when we were in high school there?! Those were some great years and totally innocent times compared to today!

I graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1960. It was a hopping fully alive place. Thanks for checking it out and giving us a sad update. I wrote a book entitled " Delta Blues From Darkness to Light" published in 2013 on Amazon. The Cat Cave was right up the street from Bobo High as a place provided for students by the City Park Commission. Every Friday night a dance took place for the students at the Cat Cave. It was also a place students could come every afternoon to dance, play ping pong, shoot pool and just hang out with snacks. Thank you for the good reminder of this sacred place to those of us who walk the halls and were given great friendships. Terry Sanford Smith Class of 1960. CHS

Some people won't remember this, but in my time there, right across the street from the Industrial Arts Building was the 2nd largest public swimming pool in the entire state of Mississippi. The only one larger was down in Jackson. I spent several summers in that pool!!

So many memories! My husband and I both went to high school here in the late 60's early 70's. The cemetery wasn't that big a deal. It was just there. The building with the stack on top was the boiler room and the band room was up stairs. The Dorr building and the Annex building that was across the street from HS were torn down sometime in the mid 80's. They were the Jr. High. I still have a brick from the Annex building. Thanks for sharing video.

What a shame to see so much American history neglected. So many buildings with beautiful brick work. We dont really see that nowdays. I truly love your work. I also love abandoned buildings and cemetery's. I always tell everyone Hello everybody when i stop at them to explore and thank all the miltary graves that served our country. Do you ever make it the west coast? Also have you ever been frightened or got the weird vibe while out exploring? Oh one more question...do you sell any of your amazing photos? Would love to have some. 👍💯

Thanks for the kind words Bill. It was a pleasure spending time with this building. I have resisted drones for a variety of reasons but, no doubt, drone footage would have been a really great addition to this video. Imagine being able to peek into the third floor windows!

@@Keithdotson Keiith, you're not going to believe this but "peeking into a third floor window" was exactly what I had in mind with a drone! You videoed Mrs. Scherk's third floor English room from the ground. Drones do add another interesting dimension but also add another level of work, expertise & possible legalities such as privacy invasion. A few months back I was the victim of an irate & obnoxious couple while using my drone near their home....which I didn't even video. Take care!

In Japan they will actually lease or sell abandoned schools to private individuals to live in like a large house. That way the structure gets maintained and the govt makes a little money from the sale. I dont know why they cant do that here in America.

Keith, thanks for these videos. I joined a Clarksdale FB group tonight and fell into a nostalgia rabbit hole. This video was like watching the Titanic - so many memories, now so many ghosts. One more tidbit Keith. At 9:40 you showed the big entry door on the south side. Just to the left of that was my Science classroom. Keith another very good presentation. Just a thought but would it be disrespectful to put your camera on a pole to look into the second story windows? Also do you ever look for corner stones of these buildings?
@Keithdotson

The fact that school once belonged to plantation owners makes me cringe. I can only image how racist Clarksdale use to be! I bet it is haunted all the bodies they probably lynched on that plantation. You should do a video of Clover Hill Plantation- my granny use to pick cotton there. RIP to all the slaves & ancestors 😢
