The song was written by Ike Turner, he also played piano on the track. It was credited to Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats because Sam Phillips, who produced the record, wanted another song to be released and promoted as an Ike Turner song.

I can remember as a kid hearing Bill Haley for the first time at a state park store. People were talking about him and his music as something that was really different. Had no idea that it would go where it did.

Loving the throwback to the roots of rock n roll. I might be a 70s baby but when I was really little I loved rock n roll and was exposed to it because my Mum worked in the local pub which had a proper old school juke box. Because a lot of the pub's customers then were in their teens and 20s in the fifties there was a lot of RnR records in there. Every so often the records would be swapped out and sometimes my Mum would bring home a bunch of singles that were just too old to stay in rotation and weren't worth anything really. So my musical journey started with folk like Chuck Berry, Big Boppa, Bill Hailey and Buddy Holly. They were even the records that taught me how to work a record player.

In our never ending pursuit of the flashy and new, it's good to look back to the roots where the tree grew. Peace.

Sun Studio is a recording studio opened by rock-and-roll pioneer Sam Phillips at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, on January 3, 1950. It was originally called Memphis Recording Service, sharing the same building with the Sun Records label business. Sun Studio is perhaps most famous for its role in the early years of Elvis Presley’s career. Reputedly the first rock and roll single, Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats' "Rocket 88" was recorded there in 1951 with song composer Ike Turner on keyboards, leading the studio to claim status as the birthplace of rock & roll. Blues and R&B artists like Howlin' Wolf, Junior Parker, Little Milton, B.B. King, James Cotton, Rufus Thomas, and Rosco Gordon recorded there in the early 1950s. Rock and roll, country, and rockabilly artists, including Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Charlie Feathers, Ray Harris, Warren Smith, Charlie Rich, and Jerry Lee Lewis, recorded there throughout the mid-to-late 1950s until the studio outgrew its Union Avenue location. Sam Phillips opened the larger Sam C. Phillips Recording Studio, better known as Phillips Recording, in 1959 to replace the older facility. Since Phillips had invested in the Holiday Inn Hotel chain earlier, he also recorded artists starting in 1963 on the label Holiday Inn Records for Kemmons Wilson. In 1957, Bill Justis recorded his Grammy Hall of Fame song "Raunchy" for Sam Phillips and worked as a musical director at Sun Records.

Excellent find Kel. This is the genre that is so often overlooked. In the 1980s there was a resurgence in bands such as Room full of blues, Juke Jumpers, the Mighty flyers and many more of you can find.

Sun Records was in Memphis Tennessee and was the launching point of many stars…including what has been dubbed “The Million Dollar Quartet”, consisting of Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash! Chess Records was based in Chicago and their biggest star was probably Chuck Berry, but they also had Willie Dixon, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Bo Diddly…and many other well known names including Jackie Brenston and Ike Turner who are featured in this song! And, the “Rocket 88” was a V8 engine introduced by General Motors for the Oldsmobile division in 1949…and became very popular, as this song demonstrates.

One of the early songs that I enjoy is a song called "Train Kept A-Rollin'", recorded by Tiny Bradshaw in 1951, covered by Johnny Burnette & The Rock and Roll Trio in 1956, then by The Yardbirds with Jeff Beck on guitar in 1965, by Aerosmith in 1974, which was the first version I ever heard, and by Motorhead in 1977.

Keep going with the early rock n roll. Such good stuff.

Without Chuck and Elvis and Bo and all the greats from those days, we wouldn't have rock music today.

So very interesting, Kel’s thirst for knowledge on the beginnings of Rock music is so cool. I didn’t know any of this, my thoughts were always that Bill Hayle and the Comets Rock Around The Clock was the first cross over to modern Rock music. I like Kel’s research into this. May I suggest that after Kel is done with the history of the beginnings of Rock music that you guys move onto the future of Rock music and the young musicians who are the future of Rock. I firmly believe that Rock music is not dead and there are many young bands out there who are pushing Rock music into the 21st century and I suggest The Warning and Liliac as two examples of very young bands who are killing it. Both found their current success from doing cover songs on KZfaq as a start. The Warning is a trio of girls, sisters, from Mexico who are currently enjoying the success of their third studio album and a world wide tour with established bands like Halestorm and The Pretty Reckless. While Liliac, another family band of five (two sisters and three brothers) have a few albums out of their own and are touring the US playing in smaller venues. Liliac has been known for their covers of classic Rock from Metallica to Iron Maiden to Ozzy to the singer Melody’s favorite Dio. I, being a huge Dio fan, can honestly say Liliac’s Dio covers are the best I’ve ever heard. Liliac also have a few albums of their own music which are incredibly good. These two bands are just a small example of the young bands out there that are Rocking it. A few others I’ve come across lately are Iron Cross, Evol Walks and Palahandra. Please consider this as a cool part of your history of Rock/Metal series. Stay Cool 😎 and… \m/ Stay Metal \m/

Not sure whether your musical background has come across this before, Kel, but the growling vocals associated with metal is a style called 'vox diaboli' and dates all the way back to the mummer plays of the 13th and 14th Centuries. The character of The Devil spoke in such a voice - so in a way metal can be traced back some 600-700 years. You will probably be aware that there are also some elements of metal in the heavier operas.

I would describe this style as Rockabilly. I always thought it came out of Memphis. This style, in addition to black blues, was what heavily influenced the British Invasion bands…The Beatles, The Stones, and Zep, especially Plant and Page. Just FYI, after Zeppelin, Robert Plant formed a group called The Honeydrippers. They released one album. It was rockabilly style. If you listen to Rockin at Midnight, you will get this exact rhythm and almost same chord progression

Johnathon below has the locations correct on Chess Label and Sams Sun Studios. It is quite possible the song was recorded at Sun and released by Chess. As for the Rocket 88. It was not the introduction of the Oldsmobile. Ransom E. Olds was the founder of the company Oldsmobile back in 1897. The song Rocket 88 was written as a tribute to the hot V8 engine developed by the company in 1949. The song talks about a ragtop....the car was the Oldsmobile 88. Over all it is a fun song...but to me the real surprise was hearing Gorees song earlier.

I've seen videos of Fats Domino saying what they were calling rock and roll was what he knew as rhythm and blues, and that he had been playing it for many years.

Nice to have you back. I was just thinking about how rock n roll started out like this then went through a bunch of transformations and at one time came back around to be rockabilly which sounds quite similar.

You both should go or rent the Elvis movie. He was heavily influenced by Black or R&B music. Beale street in Memphis Tn. was a heavy influence on him. Sam Philips liked Elvis because he was a white man who had a black sound.

One of the pre prog or early progressive rock bands were the Moody Blues who mixed it up with many different styles and sounds.

Earlier than the 1800s. There is heavy metal based on medieval church hymns.

Hey you too, I hope your good. A great song to play is Hound Dog. There are 2 versions of the song. The first is by Big Mama Thortan then the second is by Elvis Presley. It would be interesting to hear your reactions on camera to both versions. They are very different. She influenced Elvis hugely and he loved her version of the song. Great stuff.

A lot of what you said about classical music is some what true.It’s technical considered pop music or popular music by the people of the time. This is why music of the 80’s was called new wave in the early part of the 80’s but was gradually relabeled as pop music in the late 80’s. The term new was not applicable after a certain period of time because it wasn’t new anymore.Those original songs were then moved to their base roots section such as rock,pop or whatever they were based on.Sandy Pearlman the founder of BOC had said that hard rock and metal stems from classical music.A lot of musicians do have some classic musical training.

You asked "Where does prog come from?" That depends on how you define prog, IF you mean long-ish keyboard-based tracks, then it dates back to the inventions of the electric organ, the Moog and other synthesizers. However, IF you mean very long, single movement tracks on a single theme, then its roots can be traced back to the early tone poems on the mid-18th Century.

Chess was a record label used for distribution. I think The Kingsmen who did "Louie, Louie" were on Chess in the 60s.

Chess records was in St Louis. chuck Berry recorded at this label. Sam Philipps Sun Records was in Memphis Tennessee. Elvis Presley recorded there as well as other artists. a lot of black artists couldn't record at some record labels because of segregation. Big Mama Thorten is a pioneer.

Hey Kel....you need to watch "RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World". Documentary about how Native American Indians really influenced blues in America, which influenced all the major rock bands. So many great session musicians were American Indian. It's incredible and cool, and I think it's on Netflix.

For me this was Be-Bop/Jazz I've always put Elvis in that category. Imo Rock-n-Roll didn't start until distortion was applied to the guitars.

The history of popular music is a cornucopia of influences for instance McCartney had roaring twenties in his blood on that smorgasbord of a White Album ! You'll have to deal with black music in the early fifties Kel and move thru white groups like Bill Haley and the Comets etc! Have fun and I still regret not noting down some great tracks I saw in long gone early movies! 🤡
