Kel tec PLR 16 in 556 & 223 caliber

This is the Kel-Tec PLR16. It was a fun little weapon, until after a 100 rounds it started to have failure to fee problems, bolt would not close, misfire and failure to eject the casings. Too bad but still love this weapon. I will be sending it to Kel-tec for repair.
Apparently some have had similar problems. It had no problems in the beginning. When I get it repaired and working, I will update all of you and create a video at the range shooting it. Here are the specs.

The PLR-16 is a gas operated, semi-automatic pistol chambered in 5.56 mm NATO caliber. It was designed as and is intended as a long-range target and hunting pistol.
The PLR-16 has a conventional gas piston operation and utilizes the proven M-16 breech locking system. The rear sight is adjustable for windage. The front sight is of M-16 type. An integrated MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail will accept a multitude of standard accessories. The muzzle end of the barrel is threaded 1/2” -28 to accept standard attachments such as a muzzle brake. Except for the barrel, bolt, sights, and mechanism, the PLR-16 pistol is made entirely of high-impact glass fiber reinforced polymer.
The PLR-16 pistol comes blued, with one 10 round magazine (fully AR15/M16 magazine compatible), and includes a gun lock.

Had mine for 2 years. Shot steel, 556, 223 and handloads by the hundreds of rds. Used Pmags and aluminum as well as mag that come with the gun. Shot mine with a suppressor and with a muzzle break. I’ve never had a FTF or FTE, not once. I did use a brass catcher that bounced a spent casing behind the bolt and broke the tang at the breakdown pin. Contacted Kel Tec, they sent paperwork, shipped it in and two weeks later returned my pistol no charge. They are great!

Zero problems with mine from day one!! Government mags and various types of after market mags. Any brand of ammunition works perfectly! Do your self a favor & buy one! Home defense, survival, does it all. Just a tad long for CCW.

Got mine brand new. installed a new extractor and extractor spring plus spring buffer. oil it up good. shot 300 rounds with 1 failure to eject and 1 failure to fire. used pmag, usgi, and manufacturer magazine. federal 5.56 ammo. i love this lil baby.

This is a easy fix! Failure to eject and feed is a symptom of the Gasport something may be blocking it or a burr or you may need to bore it out a bit.

Don't know what to tell ya . I don't give it any special care , I clean it after I shoot it and spray a little Break-Free on the moving and blued parts . I have had a few shells not clear over the years but I can say that about most of my semi autos but never enough to think anything was wrong . Good luck hope they get it working for ya .

This awesome weapon finally got fixed by kel-tec and fires all 556 and 223 rounds, I was getting stressed having prior problems. Over 1000 rounds and not one hiccup. Love it.

I have the PLR-22 and SU-22 and they run like a sewing machine even on cheap ammo. Ironic since .22's are the caliber that usually cause people problems.

I have had a PLR-16 for (about) 6-7 years. I've attached a few add-ons, but haven't done any "real" modifications. I have always shot .223 in a 55 gr bullet. I haven't had any issues, except double feeds from the mag Kel Tec sends you with the pistol. I stopped using that mag, and I stopped having double feeds. I hate to hear you had problems. This video is 2 years old, so I'd like to know how (or "if") you got your situation resolved. Thanks.

It finally is shooting well. Kel-tec replaced the barrel, extractor, and works. You are right that small 10 round mag it comes with sucks. Thanks for watching, glad yours worked out.

i own one and I've had the same problem until I polished the chamber and it eats any type of ammo i use even steel ammo...you should try it

+unclesam7575 Thanks for the info. Can you tell me what you used and how did you polish the chamber in this weapon? It is hard to get in there. I have polished the feed ramps on my other guns and they work smooth but not in this thing, getting to the chamber is a bit hard. Let me know, thanks.

+Ghostginthree What I did was kind of tough doing it also but it's worth all the trouble...what I did first wad of course disassembled the weapon first and then took the same cotton .223 cleaning rod (the ones that are flexible) and wrapped 1000 grit sandpaper with a little gun oil, give it a shit load twists and go with your regular cleaning ritual an you should be fine.my baby loves tula ammunition now with no stove piping or stuck casing

Yes, just recently sent it to Kel-tec to have it fixed and they replaced the entire bolt. I have not had a chance to shoot it, to see if the problem is fixed. I will be making a video on it, showing it in good condition or not. Hopefully it works well. Thanks for watching.

I hope things work out and will they tell what they did to fix it.?I wonder if it was a gas port problem.?

The letter Kel-tec sent back with the weapon, was vague. I did notice they replaced the entire bolt carrier group but never mentioned it in the repair letter. They just said, they repaired it. Liability maybe, who knows but as long as they repaired it, I am happy. I am hoping I can go shoot and test it this coming week or so and I will make a video on it, hopefully showing it works.

Lets us know and post another video.I think that may help other PLR16 owners with any problems and thanks for the reply.I added the plain jane Redlion foreend and a Doublestar Hawg muzzle device thats heavy as hell.lol These things are a blast to shoot.They are loud as hell and the muzzle blast is something.lol
