As the world-leading expert on Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS), he is actively changing the way we think, talk about, treat, prevent, and manage EGUS in our horses both in Australia and internationally. He has pioneered research on EGUS with a focus on Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD) and has numerous peer-reviewed publications to his credit including being the lead author of the current international consensus statement on EGUS in the adult horse.
Dr Sykes explains how the term 'Hindgut Ulcers' has become really popular but it's actually a misrepresentation of the disease processes and probably something we need to stop saying and really focus on the actual specific disease processes that might be going on in the hindgut.
How does this relate to hindgut health? Dr Sykes says, "We need to go through a logical process and look at a range of different diseases that can be caused. It's really important to recognise that something like gastric ulcers is still very common. Just because it's been around for a long time, doesn't mean that we should pass it and go to something that's new, trendy and heavily marketed."
