When you don't have a full band (which by the way is VERY expensive!), they play the backtrack. This has essential elements to songs including backing vocals. The mic is turned on (as I'm sure we can hear MaKhumalo singing) so the singer can ad lib and sing main vocals. If MaKhumalo was not paid for a full band performance, she will opt for the backtrack. The DJ is there to mix the track list that is to be performed. Kelly will act like the conductor to the choir and signal for him when to take up the volume or down, when to stop, start, etc...Hope this helps!
