Sadly lukes last perfomance,
and amazing right until the end.
Lyrics:
I must away now, I can no longer tarry
This morning's tempest I have to cross
I must be guided without a stumble
Into the arms I love the most
And when he came to his true love's dwelling
He knelt down gently upon a stone
And through her window he's whispered lowly
Is my true love within at home?
Wake up, wake up love, it is thine own true lover
Wake up, wake up love, and let me in
For I am tired love and oh, so weary
And more than near drenched to the skin
She's raised her off her down soft pillow
She's raised her up and she's let him in
And they were locked in each others arms
Until that long night was past and gone
And when that long night was past and over
And when the small clouds began to grow
He's taken her hand and they've kissed and parted
Then he saddled and mounted and away did go
I must away now, I can no longer tarry
This morning's tempest I have to cross
I must be guided without a stumble
Into the arms I love the most

Can you please tell me who originally had written it and when?
@maxford8175
@maxford8175 Жыл бұрын
@@ripcord5173 So I've been led to believe that the song is related to the English folk ballad "The Grey Cock/The Lovers Ghost". However, there are multiple sources that claim it is a Scottish ballad, which Luke Kelly claimed himself. However, these folk songs are changed and altered throughout time, especially with travelling people exchanging songs across continents. It's the same as the famous "Wild Rover", which is celebrated as Irish but can be viewed as originating from a 17th century British 'alehouse' broadside ballad. So I might be wrong, and please correct me if I am. Folk songs are too hard to trace with every country having its own version. One thing I will note, you cannot beat the mastery of the Irish when it comes to performing these ballads. Although English people have contributed to the history of many folk songs, they don't seem to capture the same emotion in performing them as the Scots or Irish. (IMO)

The man tried as he could to emphasise the didactic meaning of each song, he knew a song could tell great stories like that of the Greeks, but alas, as mighty a song he did sing, and mighty a tale he did tell, the story fell well behind the might of his great voice. Luke Kelly summoned all gods and they could only love him and wonder, is this the voice of our maker?

Ezekiel, Luke Kelly R.I.P. was an Irishman, the lead singer in the group of brilliant musicians the Dubliners. He was a very intelligent man and an amazing vocalist, you could listen to the cd Luke Kelly The Definitive Collection and listen to 'the Rocky Road to Dublin' and 'the Shoals of Herring' to hear how brilliant a singer he was. This particular clip on KZfaq is very moving because he had a brain tumour at the time. It was his last time singing in public. He died of the brain tumour. R.I.P.

I grew up listening to Luke Kelly and The Dubliners. He was a great singer but died so young. In Ireland long ago there would be barn dances with Irish music, singing and dancing and all the neighbours would gather. Irish people were not very rich and sometimes they would meet in the neighbours houses and party. I have some very happy memories of this and I learned a lot of Irish songs. Ireland has changed now because we keep our doors bolted at all times.

This is beautiful, but very sad to watch. Although he looks barely able to stay on his feet, that voice at its weakest still has more power and emotion in it than most other singers could summon at their peak. For someone with such colossal talent to die so young is a terrible loss. Given that he was extremely open to new influences, and a versatile talent, one can only imagine the great things he could still have done for many years to come.

I remember when he came to Derry I fell in love with the whole group as a young man. They stayed in the hotel beside st columns hall and asked me to get a very large carry out and take it to the hotel. Then insisted that I joined them after the concert. I didn't drink but this is a memory that will live with me until the day I die. I am now 75 years old and looking forward to seeing them again.

I sang this one evening in Birmingham. I was sitting in an old pub listening to a local musician and when he was done, I borrowed his mandolin and sang this while he packed up his other equipment. Shortly afterwards a woman approached me to ask what the song was called. I told her and she explained she loved the song but hadn't heard it since the day Luke Kelly passed and she never got the name of it. She had forgotten about it until she heard me singing it. Three years later, I hope she still listens to it.

I'm not a native English speaker, so perhaps I am completely wrong. To me the song is not just about a man visiting his lover. It's about a man, who knows he is about to die, and he wants to say goodbye to his love before he passes away. Very sad, but very beautiful. The fragile voice of a dying Luke makes this version the most powerful version of the song, and it brings tears to my eyes. I think of all the people that I have loved that are no longer with us.

Luke Kelly’s last ever live performance. He had struggled with remembering lyrics in performances before this because he was sick and they thought they would have to take a few cuts of this to get it right and he nailed it in one. If you listen closely at 3.22 you can hear Ronnie Drew turn to him and say “Good man Luke”

I feel this song sits on a bridge, on one side is the mad things you’ll do for your first love. Travel miles just to see her in the morning light before all are are awake. And firmly on the other side is saying goodbye to that life to that love. Knowing that while powerless to fight it, you have both a lament and a plea. You’ll need her steadying hand on that journey and your love in life was worth it. I hope I go in the morning as well
