I don't think anyone was asking for a pint-sized 30-round semi-automatic .22 Magnum carbine, but that didn't stop KelTec from bringing us the CMR30. Whether or not it's ever been on your wish list, when you handle a CMR30, it's the sort of gun that makes you say, "I kind of want that." But since it's a rimfire double-stack semi-auto, we have to ask a very important question: does it work?

I love my CMR30. For the past 5 years, it was my squirrel gun. Ridiculously accurate for a stock semi-auto rimfire. I love the trigger. Definitely not my pick for a self-defense gun due to the reliability; but, crazy fun to shoot and pleasant to carry around in the woods. What you've described in your review pretty much mirrors my experience.

I have to agree I have a Magnum Research and a Savage bolt action but the CMR is more accurate than them. No joke. Keep it clean and lubed and mine works well with no problems. They are dirty and a lot of aluminum so light grease. Or heavy oil is recommended on wear areas. Other than that it’s super light and love the collapsible stock and actuator location. Mags are tricky to load. So buy lots and preload. Enjoy.

Hey Chris, when I first picked up my CMR-30 a few years ago I managed to develop a reload technique for it that I think significantly helps speed things up, and it's incredibly quick and seamless despite the unusual heel push release. Essentially you use your shooting grip hand to reload (Sacrilege I know) in one fluid motion by dropping your hand, pushing the heel of your palm into the release paddle, catching the mag as it drops, and then either simply dropping it or stowing it as you reach for your new mag, and then seat the fresh mag snugly into the grip with your pinkey as your other fingers find their place on the grip again. This technique lends itself very well to tactical reloads where you retain your magazine since the action of reaching down for the magazine is one in the same with the action of removing the old one. With your support hand keeping the rifle steady shouldered and on target you can get very rapid reloads very reliably without spending too much time reacquiring your target. Give it a try next time you take your "MP7 at home" out to play!

Reamed the chamber, added a picatinny to the receiver, threaded the barrel, and modified the magazine well to accept Marlin 25MN magazines (some extended aftermarket versions and some my own customized hicaps). Sweet little shooter. So yeah, I already did this YEARS AGO. Wish I hadn't sold it, but my friend kept BEGGING me for it.

I had one of these a few years ago, and a lot of the things you said here rang true. When it's clean, and the mags are loaded properly, this thing was one of my favorites to shoot, with fast follow-up shots and pretty high accuracy to boot. But, that's only when those are met, and if even one of those things are not true, it turns into a jamming machine. I even had to send mine back to Kel-Tec when the bolt blew up on me one time. Maybe it was an older model, or I hadn't cleaned it properly, but that was still an issue that was rather annoying. I sold it after about a year of owning it as I wasn't using it as much, but had the reliability been improved, or the tolerances been loosened, I probably would still have it to the day. It all worked out, as I used the money from selling it to make a fun 10/22, but maybe someday I'll return to it, and give it another try. Chances are I'd probably get an SU-16 beforehand though lol. Great video btw!

My CMR30 blew up in my hands. I sent it to KelTec for repairs and then immediately sold it. Stay safe and don't cheap out on firearms. That being said one of my favorite guns is my KelTec P17.

Finally took mine out to the range, out 233 rounds, i had two issues, both of which I believe are at the fault of how I loaded the mags. Just failure to feed. I do have the MCARBO ramp and mag release. I love this gun.

I'm an "early adopter" of all thngs Keltec. I never expect my Keltecs to go the distance of milspec. I doubt I've fired more than 100 rounds through any Keltec (after break-in), so reliability (after break-in) has not been a problem. They always go boom when I pull the trigger. The 3AT is my daily carry gun with a belt clip. The only danger in it is that I forget it is there. Not sure if you've reviewed the PMR 30, but now that you've fallen for the CMR 30, time to give us your take on the "little brother" to the CMR 30. Chris, great review as always.

I’ve found most ammo over 40grn works good. CCI is the best. The 50grn work great. Mine is pretty much stock. Getting ready to do some actual parts upgrades. I use that WD-40 dry lube. I cleaned out the mags, light sanded (600 grit) any sharp edges, and given it a wipe with the dry lube. Cleaned the heck out of the gun and used a light coating of the same lube. When I used regular CLP or WD it seemed to gunk up, foul out quicker and malfunction. Trying out the “Stuff and Things” mag extension, hopefully this week if I can get out to the range. Great video. Thank you.

I take it back, after adding the all in 1 upgrade kit from Mr. Carbo to my PMR-30 I ran 3 full 30 round magazines thru it with no malfunctions! Yay!

Mcarbo makes great parts. I run the stainless feed ramp and the upgrade magazine latch and it made a massive improvement in reliability. Also a little lube in the magazine helped feeding problems

Haga Defense makes some neat-o goodies for the CMR-30. The forend extension brings the rail out to the muzzle and hides the wonky-looking 16' barrel.

Awesome review, I've owned a vanilla CMR-30 for about 2yrs and put about 3000rds of various ammo (all 40GR) and it has fired reliably with only 3 notable ftf. Loading the magazines with absurd consistency and accuracy is key. I feel that all of the breakages within the firearm come from massively irregular handling of the cartridges due to mag load anomalies.

I can say I am a 22 Mag fan boy and have taken many different kinds of game. A bolt action is my fav, but I have always wanted a semi auto, it wasn't designed for that and so I bolt action I will have. kudos to Kel Tech on the design.......BUZZ

My mother was a traveling nurse for a few decades so I got her a MK99 ( sexy ugly shorty of a Hungarian AK) because it was light, small and good Grammy gun because AKs run without all the maintenance. Well decades went by and she quite tracing so I got here a LWRC ICDI with all the furniture including a FAB Defense Podium bipod ( which is the bees 🐝 knees ). Well she has since gotten a little disabled mostly due to COPD & emphysema. So I’ve now given her a PMR & a CMR with a grip of mags. And of corse the CMR os decked out with all the things, including a bipod. I know most people scoff at a bipod on a CMR but for a 71 year old woman ( or anyone for that matter) it increases accuracy tremendously. All this being said her edc is a 365 with a light/laser but if shit got hairy she’s got some heat be it anyone of her weapon systems. She’s leaving in a day to take a road trip cross country and back and will be traveling with her 365 and her PMR & CMR along with one ammo can which holds more then enough 22 WMRs and 9mm. Oh worth side note she’s traveling with her BP vest and her MIRA gas mask. All this may seem excessive but with COPD if there is a fire or dust storm that would put her down and if you need to pick up arms because the situation has gotten hairy a BP vest only makes sense. Mothers and truckers make the world go round and you can never do enough for your momma Side note. Everyone says it won’t happen to me UNTIL IT DOES! She was in New Orleans for Katrina. And her hospital didn’t flood. They did shut down the hospital and used it as a staging area for supplies looted by LEOs & FF. The state AG landed a bird on the roof a few days later and ordered in the National Guard. There were 2 Doctors 4 nurses and two SWAT cops holding down that hospital till the Guard showed up and order everyone to leave. Anyhow back on topic. With a good understanding and proper training the CMR with the PMR are a very formidable load out. I mean a rifle a pistol and a thousand rounds weighs as much as a tricked out AR and a few mags. That’s all I have to say about that.... Unless your still reading and want more 😝 My momma told me, “ life is like a pond with leaches. You won’t know how bad it sucks till you go through it” 💥👊🏻🙏🇺🇸☦️

CZ 512 in .22 WMR with tactical furniture does the same job as this Kel Tec, but with fewer rounds in the magazine. Same sort of precision as you mentioned (3/4" to 1" at 50 yards) and much better reliability. Same ammo CCI Maxi Mag 40 gr.

22 mag is a good cartridge. I just wish they make match ammunition for it like you can get for 22LR. It could make long range rimfire shooting even more fun than it already is. This with a short barrel and an attachment for a single point sling(with provisions for a brace/stock)like an mp5k would be a cool setup.

Oh wow, I never saw a size comparison before. All the pictures of the CMR30 I've seen so far have been it in isolation; it looked like just the PMR with a stock glued to the back (and longer barrel, natch). That actually looks like a proper carbine when you compare it to human hands and the pistol.

super nice build and 22 mag has always been a favorite. it's really is overall the most enjoyable cartridge to fire. just enough power to satisfy and basically still no recoil. yeah I think Smith is on to something since all 22wmr ammo i've seen i jacketed, going to a gas based system makes sense.
