Kemper Effects VS Real Pedals - Do I Still Need A Pedalboard?

As I am doing more and more silent stage gigs, I recently purchased a Kemper Profiler. I want to know is whether I still need to carry around a pedal board, or are the effects inside the Kemper good enough?
In this video, I compare a Tube Scream and a Klon-style pedal against the models built into the Kemper.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.
If you are looking for any of the gear I'm using in the video click the link below.

Another great video from the rats....love it. I agree with Bill Lima's comments re: putting FX before the Kemper but either way sounded great to me. I also agree with the other comment, in the mix, I doubt these nuances will ever be heard but the Studio Rats are anal about tone like I am and I'm sure a lot of us will appreciate this video nonetheless!

Great vid Paul, thanks. I use a Kemper stage with headphones for home practice. I'm lucky 'cos I'm just an amateur doing this for fun. I don't try to make my Kemper sound like anything else, I just try to get good sounds out of it. Best tip I can give to any Kemper user is to go into the amplifier section & push the sag right up.

Thanks for the video. I am not 100% sold on the dirt type pedals on the Kemper yet. They will do in a pinch and in a band setting sound wise but the feel is not there yet for me at least.

you will notice even more of a difference if the pedals are before the Kemper. While it is true that you can change the order of the effects loop in the Kemper, the pedals are still placed after a whole A/D/A conversion, which makes them react differently than if they were seeing the signal straight from your guitar or even through true bypass pedals. When I had the Kemper, I had a small board with my wah and boosts out front and used the Kemper for Amps/Cabs and post effects( mod/delay/reverb). I think that's the best of the both worlds. Yes the Kemper boosts will do it in a pinch but having an analog chain with your boosts in front of it is still the best way to go.

So I just learned today about something that was referred to as the "headroom trick", taking a higher gain amp profile and turning the gain knob down to a clean level can result in a better sounding amp with the external pedals than using a simple clean amp with the same pedals

In a band with a speaker cab and with drummer etc these tonal nuances are lost. And they are nuances. We are sitting here with headphones trying to discern tiny differences. Believe me in a band there is no difference. It boils down to what you want. Modellers are much cheaper and flexible than amps effects pedal boards etc. they are also faster to set up and so forth. Much more convenient. However you need to spend time with them up front to model the sound. They are not plug n play. Good Amps are heavier and much more expensive. Repairs and service are expensive. But they are more plug n play. Less faffing about up front. However the future is modelling. Make no mistake. Hardly any companies making tubes any longer. It’s considered a dirty industry. So many pros have switched already to modelling because they are cheaper more convenient faster and more reliable. It’s about efficiency. Like I said tonal nuances will not be apparent at your local club gig.

Because we all play gigs. The majority of us are home guitarists. And believe it or not, some of started playing as children for the love of guitar not adulation. So if your famous and you lose your fame do you give up playing? No you play for you because you love guitar. Stop with the tube bs. There’s plenty of amp builders still around and in business. Yes the tube price has gone up but they’re available. I have both amps and digital. I prefer my amps and I’m not giving them up. I’ll use my quad. I don’t like my Kemper or helix.

Agreed. That being said, one of the advantages of pedals is tweakability in real time with no menu diving. There are times where a small amp and a couple pedals beats a modeler but 90+% of the time I just bring a Kemper and the producer is happy.

Wrong just wrong. Amps aren’t going anywhere and sales data proves so along with the myriad of boutique amp makers. Maybe for ppl who are too lazy to set up their rig with pedals etc. Guitar is a combination/culmination of small incremental “nuances” that make the end final result better. Most “professional” musicians are still using pedals and amps. Haven’t watched too many rig runs downs at all where professional players are using kempers/modeling. There’s a few but they’re far from the majority. Never mind that “nuanced” vibrato either, in a full band it’ll just get lost right 🤦🏻‍♂️

I kinda like the Kemper effects better for me since the have more options like mixing in a clean signal, definition etc on the dirts and ducking on delays and reverbs. It’s odd you’re ignoring those knobs on the Kemper. I’ve heard and this could be totally wrong but actual tube screamers have about 25% of the clean signal going through.
@Tberg76
@Tberg76 Жыл бұрын
Well, all of the signal when the TS is on, is passing through both the in/out buffer and the 4558 clipping stage. Even though at low gain stages it might sound like "clean signal" is coming through, you can always hear that the 4558 chip is in the path. Very distinct sound. Some chip/opamps sound more or less full range and less colorful, but the 4558 is kindda nasal, which is exactly what you want when using a TS.

I'm a Kemper owner. My only issue is with the Kemper drives. I can tweak the settings to make it sound like any pedal - no problems there. My issue is that if I decide I want more or less gain on a certain song, the 'knobs' won't necessarily react the same way as certain pedals (like for instance the gain knob on a Nobels ODR-1). It just 'blooms' differently. Some people like to just set it and forget it and for that it's great. Unfortunately, I'm a tweaker! ;-)

Also remember the stomps in the Kemper are set to preamp. Obviously the ones you used were in the effects loop. Which is which is obviously fine. Just different. I have the Kemper Stage, but also with a big pedalboard. I sorta feel like the drives in the Kemper are really good, and i don't *_need_* all the drive pedals i have, but i just prefer clicking on a real hardware device and adjusting real knobs vs cursoring and mousing in Rig Manager. It's the other pedals, though, that shine vs the Kemper. Kemper doesn't do a decent Univibe, so i had to shell out for the JAM. Fuzzes just aren't the same, so i have five fuzz pedals. Delays and reverbs are good, but they never amaze me. So, i have an Eventide H9, Boss DD-200, and now the Keeley HALO, plus a UA Golden Reverberator. And for chorus, even the H9 doesn't do the magic of the Boss Dimension-C waza. It might seem like idiocy, to buy a Kemper, that has all the effects inside, and then add a pedalboard that now probably costs twice what i paid for that Kemper. But, when i bought into the Kemper, it was with the mindset that i'd treat it only like an amp and cab, and if i used pedals outside of it, it would help me to feel more like i was playing an 'old school' rig-and not a computer.
@TheStudioRats

@@TheStudioRats Yessir. Not sure about "perfect," as it is a crazy amount of money. When i started the 'project,' i thought i'd maybe spend a grand on pedals. I don't want to do the math now, though: Kingtone Mini Fuzz Ge > EP Booster > Land Devices HP-2 > Fredric Effects Super Unpleasant Companion > Wampler Ego(big) > Keeley Moon Fuzz > Vertex Dynamic Distortion > Kingtone Duellist > Vemuram Jan Ray > Danelectro Roebuck > Vemuram Shanks ODS-1 > TC Electronic Zeus > Jam Retrovibe v3? > Keeley Red Dirt > Walrus Iron Horse v3 >>> into the 'front' of the Kemper. Keeley Halo > Eventide H9 > Boss Dimension C Waza > Boss DD-200 > UA Golden Reverberator >>> into the Effects Loop: KEMPER Stage >> Focusrite… iMac. The good news is that i feel like i'm done. GAS has subsided to an appreciable degree, although i did just try the new Tim (kept the Vemuram) and just ordered a Snouse BlackBox2, thinking maybe it'll replace the Kingtone's left side....
