Kena: Bridge of Spirits - In-Depth Critique

Kena: Bridge of Spirits feels like it’s been made just for me. It’s got the collect-a-thon style of a mascot platformer, mixed with the thematic concentration of a Ninja Theory game, and the boss difficulty of a souls-like. Yet somehow, it manages to fuse this all together into an identity all its own. At times the nostalgia feels warm and fuzzy, reminiscent of titles decades old, but more importantly, Ember Lab understands their audience.

You know what would be a great sequel? Kena could find an apprentice. Being a mentor for a troubled child who has potential to be a spirit guide would be a new challenge and an evolution of the themes of the first game. Much the same way Kena helped others with their grief, can she guide someone to do the same for others? The core game could be Kena getting stuck in the spirit world, and doing her best to guide her ward from the spirit realm. Her apprentice could be the one to unlock new powers and abilities with a new type of spirit, maybe water spirits that inhabit island chains that Kena’s apprentice must sail across on their journey. At the very end, Kena could test her apprentice to see if they have the strength to move on, and when the apprentice proves their resolve, they send Kena to the afterlife. Kena could also have flashbacks of when her father died, and the journey and trials she underwent to come back to the world and become a fully fledged spirit guide. Her apprentice’s struggles could trigger Kena’s memories of her own struggle. I think that would be beautiful.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS. Theres not enough games where you play as a mentor role (I can only think of a handful) and Kena is PERFECT for that. Your comment was an amazing idea, I wish the developers would see and makes this, Id spend any amount on this.

I been following Emberlab since they did a majoras mask fan film, which was freakin gorgeous. It's awesome to see their transition into Game development, as well as see the heart of their abilities retained. While I haven't played the game, I find it incredibly fascinating that they took so much inspiration from so many sources. I like how it parallels Majora's Mask in many ways, where the main character spends so much time in a hub and biome, gathering things and helping people (in Kena's case, to move on), and fighting masked enemies. Especially the grieving process. I miss the style of game that Kena seems to bring. wide but linear. Reminds me of Old Zelda and Metroid games. Anyhow, this video was amazing man. keep doing what you're doing.

Thank you for this insight. This game remembered me a lot of "beyond good an evil", besides the refreshing aspect not to fight evil but to be the social worker of struggling spirits and help them move on. As such, I have one point: Spirit mail is actually good implemented, you deliver mail, so privacy of correspondence is mandatory. Delivery drivers usually don't look what's inside the box you ordered. It reminded me of the letters of far cry 4, where all letters from the husband in Kyrat as well as the letters of his wife back in UK got lost, but made sense when all collected, as they reffered to each other.

I understand keeping certain music sacred, making select tunes into the Streisand effect keeps them special. Also, might as well continue my tradition of complementing the avatars - that tiny Rot pulls it all together.

My first way of describing Kena to a friend, was telling it reminded me of my time with the first Fable game but in a new and strangely modernized setting. - Your desciption of what you think of with A Vinyl seems to hit that head on. Simply love my time with Kena. GOTY material for us to enjoy. (and that Call of Shooty -gesture made me laugh more than intended :D )

Funny enough fable 2 was the first RPGI ever played. It opened up a whole new door for me. I jumped into oblivion after that then countless others. I personally loved this game. Even though I am more of a souls like player. I was worried this game would not be challenging, man was I surprised 😂 😂

I just finished this about an hour ago, what great timing. Extremely impressive debut from a AA studio, though the third act is clearly rushed. I'm fully expecting Sony or Microsoft to buy the devs out and make them first party. The inevitable sequel is really going to be something special.

Thank you for this video. This was the most enjoyable game that I’ve played in recent memory. And, as a 57 year old gamer, I greatly appreciate the option of difficulty settings as I just don’t have the time to engage bosses over and over again for hours on end. I want to be able to explore the story and settings without endless frustrations. And ‘story mode’ isn’t what I’d call easy anyway. I wish that the Souls games would introduce difficulty settings. I love their environments and lore, but I can’t ever get too far in them without throwing in the towel.

Hate to be that guy but souls games just require some time! 99 percent of all 3 games can be cheesed with the right items. But i do understand where you arr coming from, a better explanation of whats important in the game (a better rolling, blocking and stamina management tutorial basically) would make the souls games 30 times more approachable

@ashy it affects the creators work at the end of the day, he made tge game to be played in a certain way so to speak, my suggestions were kinda workarounds for this but at the ens of the day he made a game he wanted to make and certain people want to play it, not everyone has to either love or hate everything a game has to offer
@frostsoul4199
@frostsoul4199 Жыл бұрын
@ashy at that point you'd just have to throw in the towel and admit that DS style of games just aren't made for him. they're the sort of games that want to cultivate a particular audience that wants to be encapsulated by a harsh difficulty. it's made with a certain audience in mind and the games are built with a razor sharp focus for them. the developer had a vision to create and if their vision is a game that gives the players an intense unwavering challenge then there's nothing to truly change about that.

Welp just finished the game and it's quickly become one of my all time favorite games and is easily my GotY. I've watched the first part of your analysis so far and I'll probably watch each segment separately as I usually do since I never really had the attention span to sit through an entire one of these videos but I'm very much excited to hear and see what you thought. So far in terms of the Shinto thing, I wholeheatdedly agree and I don't thing it's reaching at all. I'm no expert on the religion either, but I got similar vibes from the same icons like the Fox and the Tori, not to mention balance in nature, the Rot God's purpose (which explains why the little nuggets are so gluttonous) and the way the game portrays good vs evil and the balance between. I love seeing that in story telling, where both the hero and the baddie are nuanced and not just the ideal person and a psychopath. It reminds me of Ocarina of Time/Wind Waker, which also have similar Shintoist ethics embedded into their game worlds. Anyhoo I'm looking forward to watching the rest and I'll probably reply to this comment with anything else I may want to add. Thanks again as always for your amazing content and articulate reviews!

@@MontyZander So I finally got around to finishing this. (Man I'm one good procrastinator). Everything you say, from the wide linearity to the vintage warmth and the emphasis on those foundations I agree with and also felt while playing through and I love how you compare this to vinyl because it scratches that same itch and feels like the game was made for me. I agree that the spirit currency could have had more use as well and I even had the same idea in the form of outfits for Kena and Staff skins like the Deluxe edition Staff. I also enjoyed your pokes at other critics comparing it to games with more "freedom" which I would say is massively overvalued by many game journalist and gamers alike. I was however surprised that you disliked Taro's boss battle and enjoyed the Rot God's. My experience was frankly the opposite. While I do think Taro has some technical setbacks, there are in fact ways around it and the boss only killed me six times on my first playthrough, which I did on Expert mode. The Rot God however I felt deviated from the expressive combat and climactic exchanges . There is little you can do to the Rot God to harm it, namely the Bow and Rot Binding. You can't whack it with the staff, use bombs, and the Dash is strictly used for evasion against the Rot God. I felt this made the boss feel more like a prolonged obstacle course than an epic battle. (I also felt there was a missed opportunity of putting Toshi on the Rot God's back and having a battle more akin to the horseback samurai from Sekiro but I digress). As for the Spirit Mail, I think you bring up a good point of adding some lore to the villagers but I think also keeping it simple adds to the subtlety in which Kena is purifying the land which I felt symbolizes her arrival being as naturalistic as the Rot's, so I didn't mind the lack of exposition on these sections because despite being brief, they felt just satisfying enough in their subtleties. Anyway those are all my thoughts. I love this channel and I watch every video but I fell in love with this game in particular so I really wanted to share my thoughts with you. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is likely in my personal top 5 games of all time despite some nitpicks I have. It's so gorgeous and I think this video really captures all the great things about this game very well. I your Guardians of the Galaxy video on my watch list as well and I'm looking forward to it. If you read all that then I thank you for reading my wall of text again! P.S. I agree the little flying bugs SUCK especially on Master where you need TWO FULLY CHARGED ARROWS to kill them.

So far it’s like you are reading my mind about 10 minutes in, however I disagree about seeing what kena thinks, you already explained exactly what kena thinks, compassion, she doesn’t think the kids are cute, she knows they are dead, she feels sorrow understanding compassion and mourning, and that won’t change because she has a duty and immense respect for the dead

I loved taros boss, him and the owl fight before toshi are probably my favorite bosses. (I found toshi too easy funnily enough) I will say the bosses in general are the worst part of the game because they don’t feel properly animated, and I suspect the reason is partly because ember labs aren’t experienced game designers but are experienced animators, so everything looks pretty and the combat is mostly well designed, but the bosses specifically do not have good telegraphs especially for how hard they hit and how little is explained directly to you. I would describe them as being a blend of dark souls, Zelda, and dmc, except it feels like they weren’t sure exactly how far they wanted to go in any direction. I HATE the final boss to the point on my second attempt which is when I beat it, I was going to give up due to not having even one checkpoint. The boss didn’t feel hard, it felt unfair because of how sudden you can die, taking about bs grab attacks, and the bosses roar is way to fast…. The bosses make you feel like you should have a mastery over them but I never felt that way once I brought them down, and I don’t think any boss killed me more than twice
@MontyZander

@@MontyZander like you said at the beginning of the vid, and I suspect at the end (I’m about an hour in now) I sincerely hope they make a sequel that is more personal to kena, expands the platforming akin to the final challenge during the last boss, and making the combat even more refined! And I absolutely agree you should be able to dash in mid air, it would have made a few of the dash puzzles more interesting and i was sad the platforming never got as challenging as the combat, I could see some hollow knight esque sequences in 3D and im sad it never really happens

I do not think one type of game is inherently better than the other, but speaking personally I would take the most linear, yet tight and engaging experience over the “freedom” to play in a big empty world that has nothing to do except kill things and climb things to open things so I can get the things in the things that I opened, which will then let me kill or climb more things.

Kotakus comment about the rot spirit controlls seems like it was refering to the mouse controls. With controller you just use the right stick which is fine but with mouse you need to move it multiple times across your mouse map to get it to where you want it which does feel clunky and imprecise. If the sensitivity was different it would probably feel a lot better.

Have you played the game since the anniversary update? It actually added some well-needed new loot such as gems that work as sort of active perks. Some gemstone provide extra spear damage while making you take more damage. While others increase the health you obtain when using health flowers and also buffing the damage dealt for 10 seconds. Cool stuff like that, it also added a well-needed challenge totem. These challenges are sort of like the cursed chests only much more engaging and difficult. You unlock new outfits really cool looking ones too. Sadly while I would love a sequel to this game from what I heard from others is the developer plans on just making a new IP instead of a direct sequel. It's a shame because there's so many ways they could grow on the story and lore they've built so far.

Sir, I will watch this at a later date as I want to play Kena. See you till then! Okay, 2 weeks later but I ended my first playthrough 2 days ago. While I loved this game and its message, I left feeling that I didn't earn the ending and that I was a bad gamer. I started the game on Hard mode which probably was a mistake. I am a decent gamer but not that amazing. But I had little difficulties up untill Taro. The unfairness of Taro beat me down to such a degree that I had to change the difficulty. I learned all the wrong lessons in those fights. So the changing of difficulty became my thing to do when I was stuck. It changed my entire experience and left me with the feeling of the unearned ending. Maybe I will try again, maybe not. I do not know. Time will tell me, for now I let the game go.

22:20 You're point about freedom being used to describe tedious monotony is spot on. What's funny is I immediately thought of how that word is used to describe our health care system in the U.S. we're free to do a gargantuan amount of tedious work just to end up with shitty emptiness in the end. Is something poorly designed, requires a lot of work for little to no payoff, and you're forced into using it? Just describe it as freeing. 27:40 Also a great point. I think there's a lot of group think in the games punditry industry. They seem to give a massive pass to triple A games, yet are more critical of smaller games. Fallout 4 is filled with bugs and that's called Bethesda charm, an indie game is janky and it's seen as negative. I don't think smaller studios deserve a pass for bugs or bad design, it's just interesting to se how the ones with more resources are treated with kids gloves while smaller studios aren't. With regard to originality - they apply the same sort of thinking. The Uncharted games are all basically the same yet are never referred to as unoriginal. Even the SoulsBorne games, which I love, have basically the same exact mechanics. I love Kena: Bridge of Spirits and I'm happy you're judging it fairly. I do have issues with the boss fights and pacing of the upgrades, but it's still such a breath of fresh air.

One of the things that makes the new games that are coming suffer is comparing , god of war was a perfect game for a man that was suffering from he's past even after all those years ago and he's really trying to become better person and all the obstacles in he's path, ghost of sushima was a perfect samurai game with a lot of things that you would expect from the culture of it , every game have it own natural we have to try to bind with it , every game is like a story book but with visual and choice making aspect , not every game can handle it well but they try to , they are a piece of art , and the artist might not be the greatest but he's trying to say something, trying to make he's voice heard or even make he's vision come true , i think at least we have to give it a try and don't just expect something, just let the game show it self , with all it flaws and with all that is done the best

Collectathon is my favorite genre. I played Fallout 4 for 60 hours and no progress on quests because all I wanted to do is explore and collect guns and those bobble heads. Same with GTA V online, all I want to do is drive around and find the 100 action figures and 54 cards. And of course I love every 3D mario game and collecting their collectables. It just gives me such joy to collect, even in action games where the developers decide to slap on a few just to do it.

What miffs me the most about Kena is that I didn’t get to make this game first. But, I guess the Pan-Asian story I want to tell was different anyways, still, I let a bunch of Westerners do it first lol. In addition to the Orientalism is the application of blue energy which is essentially lifting the Western concept of mana and putting it in an Asian story, which is… yet another thing I want to do. Eastern media often puts in Western elements without thinking, I thought I can do a show or a game set in an obviously European fantasy setting but have artefacts from the Maghreb, Arabia, tMaritime Southeast Asia, and East Asia show up. I could just regionalize everything but that tells everyone that we’re separate. My media would be about how we don’t need to be so divided, and that respecting other cultures IS integrating it into your own life and your own culture.

47:23 at this point, (No mid-air dash). I'm interested in knowing your thoughts on Jedi: Survivor (if you've played it) re: the traversal improvements and primarily the mid air dash ability. I found myself spamming that dash with a single jump all the time when backtracking. I just ran back through Fallen Order on a new game + to take into a more critical run through. There is a stark contrast to where you end up from where you began and also a refreshing consistency of progression for Cal's abilities. Ultimately, in relating these two I'd love to know your thoughts on designing a world for, or at least at with it in mind, traversal. (Also, great stuff, been kinda binging this series and lore dump these past few weeks. Kudos and I genuinely appreciate your work. )

I think in hindsight I was too harsh on fallen order (I really like the game but get into the weeds in my critique of it). For Jedi Survivor I feel like it’s an entirely different game feel, and the mid-air dash is just a small part of that. I dashed EVERYWHERE because it felt so good to use!

@@MontyZander I feel that, and I'm quite excited to hear your take on it. For me, playing through Survivor left me simultaneously appreciating the, for lack of a better phrase, narrativization of the mechanics of Fallen Order while also spotlighting its flaws. I found myself frustrated on a replay, much more than on my initial playthrough. Both because the game doesn't shine in a straight point A to B style of play, and that Cal just didn't feel like a Jedi anymore. I remember feeling like, "damn I'm a badass Space Wizard". But not so much on that second go-round. To loop it back to Kena, it definitely felt similar to what I experienced playing bridge of spirits. I loved the game, yet did occasionally find myself at odds with the controls, particularly in traversal.

The degree to which the gaming journalists have been critical is absolutely bizarre to me. The game clearly has some flaws, but the way some of the reviews read it's like they've completely failed to understand what type of game it's attempting to be.

I waited to watch this video until I beat the game. I never beat the game. I was so unhappy with the Corrupted Toshi fight that I walked away to go enjoy other games. This game is so beautiful and so majestic, but that fight just did me in. I have platinumed Bloodborne and E.R. so it's not a "skill" thing, it just didn't feel good to play. It wasn't enjoyable and for that Kena will live in my pile of shame forever.

Honestly tho, the new God of War and Kena: Bridge of Spirits are of the same genre. Zelda-like, that is. And Kena is better. Except for performance, that is. It consistently tries to burn my RX 480 alive unless I lock FPS to 30, even tho I can run it on Epic settings at 60 FPS.

Another hater of the weapon durability mechanic 😒 you can have so many weapons that you’ll never have to worry about one weapon breaking, but somehow it’s still the worst mechanic anyone has ever thought of. It makes the combat more dynamic, especially when you consider that Zelda combat hasn’t really changed in over 20 years.

27:38, all of that just proves my point that almost all "gamer review" from this "gamer" pages, are bullshit. And I'm sorry for being so aggressive but it has been triggering mr since well, always xd. Is so annoying to read this pseudo "gamers" talking about things they just show clearly don't understand a shit about. And Im using the word "gamer" like this in purpose, I hate that word. I have been playing since im 6 video games, I'm 23, and I hate when anyone calls me seriously "gamer", because I'm much more, I'm a (very bad) musician, writer, I like to philosophy, to draw and to do many things. And this is why I love videogames. Anyway, those comparison are the worst part of this whole "criticism" nonsense this people come out with. Like this same absurd idea lf "souls like" games. Yes, it's taking inspiration from x game/saga but the think about making a good game id how u take x gameplay mechanic/aesthetic, etc to create YOUR OWN perspective of a game. And let's pls put a lot of emphasis in the word "GAME". I sadly can't play this game, and probably wouldn't be able in a long time due to money issues, but just watching this video? Im already loving it. I have been feeling so disappointed by videogames year after year with very few exceptions that is so relieving to see that WONDERFUL sequence of a puzzle. It's feels so refreshing, so clean, so fluid and perfectly put together! Anyway srry for the rambling I needed to take that out at some point uwu
