I have been on a carnivore diet for the past 2 months. My insulin and glucose levels went from pre-diabetic to very low/healthy and my doctor asked me what I have been doing. I have also lost 13 pounds (and I am a woman who started small to begin with...136 lbs to 123lbs...so 13 pounds is a lot for me). I told my doctor that I have been strict on my diet! I feel great! Thank you for all of your tips!

Any sweetener that comes in a packet, like Sweet n Low, Equal, Splenda or even stevia in packets like Truvia, has bulking agents that do contain carbs. They are labeled as having no carbs because they have less than one carb, but all those less than ones can add up. It's better to use Erythritol (Swerve) or liquid stevia, saccharin, aspartame or sucralose. Those are dissolved in water and truly have no carbs.

Thank you for the explanation of the sweets (#5). I'm a type 2 who has been on keto for 3 months. I've had weight loss and a major decrease in symptoms of my Type 2. But my blood sugar reading each morning and night are high...very high. I did have a tiny decrease in my A1C (very tiny). Thyroid is off, but I think you hit the nail on the head. I drink zero sugar drink mixes a lot throughout the day. I'm going to do my best to stop. I don't know how well I'll do, but hopefully this will help. Thanks again.

I knew about the maltodextrin problem, but it really hit home over the holidays, when my girl had a 299 blood sugar before her Thanksgiving meal, which was at 2 pm. Her morning glucose was fine, and she only had coffee for breakfast, with a maltodextrin sweetener (which masquerades as "stevia"). Then about noon she had a sandwich on low carb bread, so there were enough carbs there to spike her glucose some, but not as high as 299, except that, as I found out later, maltodextrin is like pure glucose. Counting maltodextrin as twice the carbs as table sugar did the trick, and supplied the carb count which reasonably explained the spike. Sugar is 200 grams per cup. So if you double that and divide by 48 teaspoons per cup, then maltodextrin has 8 grams of glucose based carbs per teaspoon. A tablespoon in a cup of coffee, is 24 grams. The sandwich was another 19 grams. This adds up to 43 grams, or in her case 7 units of insulin, or 175 mg/dl on the glucometer. 120 + 175 = 295. It was embarrassing because we expected her blood sugar to be good for the whole family to see, showing off the results of our low carb diet. It was a rude awakening. We've banned maltodextrin from our diets, and I've finally got her using homemade creamer made with half n half and erythritol. The store bought "sugar free" "zero calorie" creamers all have maltodextrin, and very few people are aware of the huge problem this poses for diabetics. People think they can trust the front label on food, but they must educate themselves about the back of the container, the ingredient list, and the dangerous and deceptive lies on packages.

Stevia is actually a plant so and not the same as maltodextrin, but many brands taint the stevia by adding maltodextrin. I also like liquid Stevia that Trader Joe's sells... though the liquid has a little alcohol because it's an extract.
@ConnieWobbles
@ConnieWobbles Жыл бұрын
Stevia is fine, it's additional ingredients that are added to sweeteners that may impact the carb load. I'm mentioning this as the way your comment is worded it may stop someone from reaping the benefits of using Stevia to manage their insulin resistance. Stevia is one of the best sweeteners to use as it's just a plant and doesn't cause digestive issues in the way other keto friendly/low carb sweeteners may do.

I was so proud of myself that I finally will eat broccoli....except I like it mushy. What about faux mashed potatoes or faux rice made with cauliflower? That’s another thing I just started eating. There’s so much to learn and remember with this way of life...however, there’s a lot to learn if I become diabetic or have heart problems (testing glucose, insulin, multiple prescriptions, etc). I want to be healthy so I can live a long time and drive my children nuts. :) Thank you for all the informative videos. I really like the point blank, but gentle, way you present the information!

pac52 I wonder if simply smelling something powerfully sugary, like a fresh, glazed jelly doughnut, will provoke and insulin response. I ask because I smelled one up close last weekend...
@nickjohn2051
@nickjohn2051 4 жыл бұрын
@@susangrande8142 In my opinion. Yes. Because dopamine can cause cascade effect. The dopamine stimulate neuroepinephrine which in turn stimulate heart rate and provoke liver to release glycogen in the bloodstream. Higher amount of glucose in blood provoke another cascade of liver producing insulin to counterract the glucose spike. After you eating, only then dopamine wear off and the serotonin kicks in. The serotonin also responsible for feeling "full" same as hormone ghrelin as two work together. Serotonin next cascade will turn to melatonin which promote sleep. So yeah thats how you get sleepy after lunch or dinner that use tons of high carbs in the diet. If you smelling food and not eating, this can backfire. Why? Because neroepinephrine is "fight or flight" neurotransmitter. It sense that "gee I smell alot of sweet, why the stomach still not full of it" it provoke another messenger called cortisol. This is stress hormone. Small enough is good. It makes you grumpy a bit as that is how we constantly reminded to EAT. But excessive of it is dangerous. Excessive cortisol caused body to store energy rather than burn the fat. This is why most Calories In, Calories Out strategy dont work. Because when you deep intense hungry, you brain secrete tons of cortisol to move you to eat. If you limit the CICO drastically, the body can sense it and put it in "fight or flight mode". The brain intrepret low CICO as you having problem or starvation which kicks its gear to "ultra saver mode". This mode use excess sugar stored as fat to save energy. So in ironic way, the more you starve yourself, the more fatter you will be. As you have to compensate excess hunger with excess calories. Sometimes the person not even realize it. For example he used to take 2 eating session, one lunch and one dinner. He put lower CICO to lose weight. During the day, he snacking some white bread and snack to curb the hunger. Not realizing that the bread and snack already exceed his calories goal of the day. He jsutified it as "owhh I just need to eat less at lunch".

Nick John Wow! This is very interesting! My husband still believes in the CICO strategy for losing weight, and he’s addicted to simple carbs and sugar (SAD). He’s used the CICO strategy with rebounds over the years, and he’s now very overweight (we’re both 61 years old). I’m afraid he’s headed for diabetes and heart disease. He already has Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and high blood pressure.

I just started Keto and have been learning HOW to do it every day. So, it's from this episode, you said "proteins cause spike insulin level" . I watched some other videos about " Gluconeogenesis" from other experts. My question is there any easy way to set up my protein intake goal/potion a day WITHOUT using calculating LBM ? (I guess I'm just lazy to do the math😜)

Remember that insulin is a shuttling hormone so technically you would not be able to absorb anything without insulin. The issue with insulin is more with the receptor cells and them getting worn out from the constant insulin pounding.

Dr Berry I just bought your book”Lies My Doctor Told me”thank you so much for spreading the truth. I have been carnivore now for 4 days and I am seeing results already in my insulin levels (I’m type 2). However, I am on insulin and seem to have been gaining weight. How do I loose weight and stay a carnivore if I am taking all this insulin?
@seikibrian8641

Keep an eye on your blood sugar levels. (Since you take insulin, I'm assuming you have a glucometer. If not, get one.) Your blood glucose levels should be coming down, in which case you can reduce your insulin intake.

@seikibrian8641
@seikibrian8641 2 жыл бұрын
@@safiyahokilo432 Yes, that's normal. In the morning our bodies release hormones that wake us up, increase our heart rates, release glucose into our blood streams, and otherwise get us ready for an active day. That increase in blood sugar that Dr. Berry talked about is called "the dawn effect."

I can't go in ketosis because of the fricking proteins. I should eat 15-20 grams per meal, but I can't stop, and I end up eating 25-30 grams/meal. It does not matter that I don't eat any carbs, gluconeogenesis it's doing its job. For me (5'2", 140 lbs), sedentary) even 20 grams of protein is too much. Maybe if I exercise, I may see a difference.

For an active male who weight trains intensely, and routinely, roughly .5 to .8 grams per pound of lean mass. Even using P.E.D.s, 1 to 1.5 grams is plenty to build slabs of muscle.

Hi Dr. Berry, I've been following you for awhile and am now going through all your IF videos. You mention in this one that "too much protein" will spike your insulin levels. That being said, wouldn't the Carnivore diet be "too much protein?" This video has been reintroduced in 2021, so I'm a bit confused. I've also been doing Carnivore.

Every morning before my black coffee I test my blood sugar and it is at 124! Is that normal? Or should it be lower? What am I doing wrong for my blood sugar level to still be high?
